Is the "N word" still racist?

Postby Cosumar » Tue Mar 24, 2015 4:21 pm

I've seen this topic come up multiple times recently on this website upon the colloquial use of the word "nigga" in completely unrelated threads.

Some say it no longer carries its former meaning thanks to pop culture and the fact that time heals all wounds. They argue that it's great that black people have taken ownership of the word amongst each other so that it can't hurt them anymore. And some say it's now becoming acceptable for young whites, for example, to call their black friends "nigga" as a joking term of endearment much like some young males may nonchalantly call their friend a "faggot".

In 2015, is the N word still racist no matter what? Or do intent and form ("nigger" vs. "nigga") determine if it is offensive or not?

Personally, I object to the notion that it can ever be a purely harmless word. The continued presence of the word in society's consciousness does nothing positive for race relations and the pursuit of equality. When a black person (particularly a young, impressionable black person online) sees it used and accepted in this "joking" way, knowing full well all the negative societal connotations of it, the meaning gets internalized and creates a lens through which they see themselves. It's sad to hear celebrity role models and even people I see at the grocery store addressing their children, siblings, friends and all, using that word. When those kids learn the hate behind that word and hear it in that context, how can they be expected to differentiate between a family member's off-hand comment and a bigoted stranger's disdain and negative expectation? It's a cycle of negative self-perception. The easiest way to keep a people down from generation to generation is to control how they see themselves, and I think that's what the normalization of this word is doing. I'm not advocating censorship or anything like that, but gradually phasing this word out of our vocabulary would help race relations in the long run. That goes for both blacks and everyone else.

What do you think?

Setting, intent, and form matter (setting is probably the most important, as it determines the other two). For example, when white actors in 12 Years a Slave used the word, they were not considered to be racist, because they were portraying something. In most cases, it probably isn't a good idea for a white person to use it (particularly the hard "-er" form) at all outside of said movie settings. If said in an extremely exaggerated way to do something like making fun of the racist-southerner stereotype (e.g. a popular line in my school is "Nigger, if anyone's gonna have sex with my sister, it's gonna be me." in an exaggerated Southern accent, where the person using the slur is clearly the butt of the joke) then maybe it could be used. Other than such settings, it should be left alone.

Offensive words will never completely become unoffensive. In 80 years f*** may be a fine word to use in public, but it will still be remembered to some as rude.

Yes. Walk up to any African-American, or any black person around the word, and call them the N word. Hell even non-blacks find the word wrong. You will see that people still find this word wrong. It is still very offensive to many and thus shouldn't be used.

That is entirely dependent on the individual. You can't say that this word isn't offensive anymore because I don't find it offensive so therefore you can't find it offensive either.

The word is neutral

Postby Central Monian States of America » Tue Mar 24, 2015 4:51 pm

The term Nigga and Nigger are two different terms. Nigga means "homeboy" or "buddy". Unlike the word, "fuck", the term nigga is the most powerful word on the planet. If used the wrong way it could cost people their lives or reputation. So if you approach a man of color and you call him or her a "nigga", be prepared to get your ass beat - unless you know that person well.

It's only offensive to those who use it the wrong or ignorant way.

You only make it offensive if you let it be so.

The day the word nigger just gets a shrug will be the day I take back my opinion that Humans are stupid but clever beast.

This likely won't happen, so I'll just dream when we get thicker skin...

Unless your predisposed to not be able to take things in stride, that can't be helped if insults just trigger your button and makes you wanna hurt the offender...

But still, for the general populace, I want them to grow some skin and stop hiding like babies from words, and then talking like three year olds saying the n word, or c word, or f word, etc.

I personally do find any variation of it offensive when directed at me personally and will automatically take it as such no matter the circumstance. I refuse to take it lightly no matter what and will not accept it from anyone regardless of race and people who do direct it towards me or others will find I will turn my back and refuse to deal with scummy behavior of that nature. If you wish to use it among yourselves then fine I will not care so long as you do not dare drag me into it, and if you do I will take it as a hostile action and respond accordingly.

Poll added.

I realize there are many different outlooks on this issue, so if your views do not align precisely with one of the options, feel free to specify in a reply.

I think the fact that some (primarily younger generations) do not consider it an insult reflects a woeful ignorance of the culture of suppression, humiliation and violence against blacks that was very strong in the United States until just a few decades ago, and still lingers today. People who fling the word around in everyday banter, or online, should have a little more respect for the gravity of the word and the ugly tradition it espouses. As someone else said above, just because you personally don't see it as offensive doesn't mean others will be able to overlook its weight so easily.

No...its true.

If you just let its power simmer off, and just don't let it get to you, its nothing.

Isn't that a big reason why its been taken in by many in the African American communities in the US? Nigga being a way to let that words power die? Make it their own?

We can talk about how effective that is, but the simple fact is if people just stopped feeding this shit, it wouldn't actually do anything.

Being from the US South, I hate the word. I hate it when whites use it, and I hate it when blacks use it. I think it is wrong for ANYONE to use that word, and I consider it to be worse than the F-bomb. It is impolite, racist, and antagonizing, whether it ends with a -er or -a, or used in common conversations between people of the same race or different race.

But what makes it even more bad, is the use in pop culture. I can't believe that we allow this slander to be used in public, especially aimed at teens and adolescence in songs, movies, and literature. I can understand if it is used in historical context; ex) 12 years a slave, Selma, or Huckleberry Finn because that is when the word was used, and it use helps us realize what a harmful term it is.

I find the use of the word evil, and I hate how in today's society, it is being brought back and turned into a common word for use. We should move on from the past prejudices, and stop using it to antagonize certain people. We should only know of its existence, for sole historical purposes, and not to be used in common slang.

I'm of the opinion it depends entirely on the circumstances, the intent, and the demographic.
Live on the northeast coast of the USA, and any form of the word is likely to get you in a boatload of trouble... but probably won't land you in the hospital.
Head on down to the southeast, and it's taken to both extremes - some people are totally fine with it, it offends others... it's more commonplace to be heard, but it'll either get blown off because nobody minds, or you risk taking a knife to the belly. In my experience, close friends, regardless of who is what color, can use it with no bad intent and no hard feelings - like telling a close friend he/she is a [insert pretty much any expletive here] to his/her face, getting the insults thrown right back at you, and everybody laughs. On the other hand, a complete stranger is going to far more aware of the offensive side of any joke or slur, and even if they don't find it offensive, they may get offended just because they think you're being offensive.

As far as I can tell, "nigger" is almost completely taboo because it directly relates all that bigotry and historical significance behind the basic definition of "ignorant". "Nigga" is a derivative of "nigger" that doesn't directly translate all the old offensive meanings, and is used frequently enough in familiar relationships that it's become its own thing. The derivative form is about as offensive as "dumbass" and similar terms. Just how offensive it is depends entirely on the situation and people involved.

So... the use of "nigga" is a game of russian roulette. Just like trying to hit on someone with a lewd joke. The intent of the speaker and the preference of the audience is what determines the difference between "inoffensive" and "harassment". (emphasis on the audience's preferences, if we go by those relatively new laws about harassment and such in the workplace.)
Be silent. Be not still.

Depends on context. I mean, I don't see how that isn't obvious.

I'm not black, but several friends, black and white, have told me that nigga is acceptable. It probably is in some situations.

The hard -er always makes me flinch, though. It's so socially ingrained that I can joke about and use other racial slurs in discussions about them, but I can't help but dance around 'nigger'.
