Medieval America: 1000 Years After the Apocalypse [WB OPEN]

Medieval America

1,000 Years
After the Apocalypse

Worldbuilding Thread
Image

It has been nearly 1000 years since the collapse of industrial civilization, and the New Middle Ages are upon us.

No one really knows all the details of civilization's demise. Whether it was nuclear war, famine, taxation, plague, killer asteroids, petroleum depletion, erosion, sunspots or alien invasion is anybody's guess. The records of that period are scanty because everybody was too busy blaming everybody else to sit down and describe exactly what happened, but the world lost about 1000 years of technological development in the blink of an eye. Computers and airplanes disappeared from the face of the earth or were rendered useless. Cars were replaced by mules; guns by bows; power plants by water mills; tractors by oxen. None of the industrial tech has found it's way back to society, and probably won'the for a few thousand more years.

The catastrophe that hit the human race - whatever it was - spared the Earth. The world was not beset by radioactive mutants or anything like that. The coasts were not washed away by the melting of the ice caps. Nature is old enough and big enough to take care of herself, and she rode the crisis admirably, quickly reasserting her dominance over the planet. Wolves moved down from Canada to stalk the edges of what remained of human civilization. Weeds broke through the asphalt.

In most of the world, the New Middle Ages were merely a rerun of the Old Middle Ages. In England and Japan, the constitutional monarchies dumped their constitutions. Europeans turned again to the Roman Catholic Church for guidance. Camels plodded along the caravan routes of the Middle East, bringing silk from China and pilgrims to Mecca, just as they did a thousand years ago. In America, however, medieval times were a new experience...

This is the worldbuilding. Not a place for character apps. That will come later, if we can create a decent enough world. Just go ahead and start making stuff and I'll consider it. There is no magical aspects, this is medieval, not fantasy. Once every other day, I will introduce a new nation or faction, to keep the creative process moving.

Nation Suggestion app. Make as many as you want, no gurantee I'll use any of them.

Very much a WIP proposal, but what do you think so far? I'm trying to take inspiration from Rome and the Most Serene Republic of Venice.

Great minds think alike. I was thinking of something similar with a horse mounted warriors united under a powerful cause run under some type of Stratocracy, inspired in part by the Cossacks.

Unlikely guns will be gone completely, sure the more modern things like assault rifles would of long since rusted way but things like flintlocks and the like would still be umping around occasionally. Once an idea is out there it is virtually impossible to remove, Fire arms are an idea and as such wont die so easily. They may be uncommon but they wont have permanently disappeared, remember this is america.

History: Caucasian-Hispanic people came together in Los Angeles, the capital of the Republic of San Gabriel, to discuss a plan of unity to protect each other from further Native American invasions south of Oregon. They agreed to create a strong union based in Los Angeles, called the Union of California. Eventually, the union fell apart due to conflict of ethnicity, power, and poor communication, and nations in California were left to fend for themselves. However a group of republics met in Oakland and signed a treaty creating a decentralized confederacy in which member republics would aid each other in food and weaponry, as well as a complex system of paved roads and a capitalist system of commerce. A central legislature in Oakland would meet to discuss relations between republics and foreign relations, however republics within the confederacy decided everything else. The young confederacy quickly grew in power and began expanding into neighboring states, taking most of northern California and encouraging Caucasian settlement deeper into Sierra Nevada and southern Cascadia.
Religion: Although the majority of the population is protestant, there is a strong following of Roman Catholic in the south due to descendants of Hispanic-American immigrants of the previous millennium.
Military: Being decentralized, there is no official trained military, however a large army of armed volunteers is called up to the nation capital in Oakland if the time calls for it. Most Republics within the confederacy have their own trained forces and typically assist each other when defending from other nations or the greatest threat to the Confederacy, Native Americans.
Society & Culture: Descending from a liberal culture, Californian people are much less traditional then other nations. It isn't that uncommon for women to have part time jobs outside of home, or homosexual couples to exist, and although not shunned in most regions, in the countryside, families stick to traditionalist values and strict moral codes. The nation is built on a capitalist economy, and private trade is actively encouraged. Californians in urban communities are catered with extensive entertainment, in exquisite theaters and opera houses or in large stadiums where popular sports such as Pallam, a sport similar to Association Football, are played.
Anything else? The de facto capital is Oakland, and other major cities include The Golden Gate (San Francisco), New Toledo (San Jose), Humboldt (Eureka), Jefferson (Medford), Russ (Sacramento), Niles (Fremont), Napa, Ausinus (Monterey), Fresno, and Carrillo (Santa Rosa).

I'm cool with that.

My guy aren't barbarians really, were pretty civilized. Think of us sorta like Caesar's legion an all encompassing horde sent to conquer and assimilate all in it's way, but run in a somewhat republican fashion instead of a military dictatorship.

To us you are the barbarians.
