NationStates College Football season 11

Here it is! The eleventh edition of NationStates College Football. Here you will find Rosters for your opposition, and all RPs should be posted here too.
Any questions should be posted in the discussion thread, to avoid OOC clutter, please. Failing that, feel free to send a telegram to Saintland or any conference host.

As is normal between seasons here, there are a couple of changes again, so if you're a returning team, please read carefully. New teams, welcome!

The NSCF procedure is outlined here.

With numbers increasing from 30 teams to 36, all five of the six conferences that appeared in season ten will be retained: Celestia, Horizon, Mineral, Woodlands and Zephyr. In addition, Sequoia Conference, which was suspended for last season, has been reactivated.

Each conference will have six teams, and the regular season will be double round-robin, for a total of 10 games. Games will be scorinated three times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please check your conference for a projected RP cutoff time. Scores will be posted in this thread.

After all ten regular season games, there will be a "Non-Conference week", with each team playing up to three games against opposition from other conferences. These games will not count toward conference championships, but WILL affect playoff seedings. All Non-Conference games must be arranged by the teams playing them, and confirmed by matchday four of the regular season.

The playoff format this season is twelve teams, -- all 6 conference champions plus the next 4 best teams by OSPI, and two selected by the NSCF committee -- in a seeded, four round, single-elimination bracket. Seeds for the playoffs will be determined purely by OSPI, and the higher seed will have home advantage until the final, which will take place at a neutral venue yet to be decided. Any nation can put together a final hosting bid, before the start of Non-Conference week, to be voted on by the NSCF Committee. The top 4 seeds will receive a first round bye in the playoffs.

In addition to the usual playoff system, there will be the possibility of a small series of "bowl games" prior to the playoffs for teams not reaching the post-season. Proposed bowl games will be listed below, and organizing nations will be responsible for sending out invites to eligible teams closer to the time and confirming that the game will take place. There is no obligation to take part in a bowl game. The Pioneer Bowl is a traditional game for the two best performing newcomer teams not in the playoffs, and the NSCF will not recognize any bowl game involving a team with an OSPI below 0.450.

Pioneer Bowl sponsored by the Church of Saintland
to be played at Royal Stadium St. Petrus, Saintland
Contested by: Top two newcomer teams not in the playoffs.

Non-Conference Games

Games are only listed when confirmed by both parties. Only games listed here will be scorinated.
If both you and your opponent have confirmed a game, but it is not listed here, send a TG to NSCF.

Blue matchups denote a potential scheduling clash, and those games will need to be re-confirmed or rescheduled before the deadline, or they will not be included in scorination. Red matchups are those I have taken note of from the discussion thread, and require confirmation, but would otherwise be fine.

Team Outline
Offense

The offense primarily works out of a pistol set, with Sabine Gerlach a few steps behind Harley Lyons and Seymour Ingram directly behind her. They typically line up three receivers in this set, with Marc Flores out wide left, Petra Stafford in slot, and Lynn Byers on the right, with Cliff Pennington subbing in for Stafford when his height or strength is called for. A favorite play from this formation is the bootleg option where Gerlach rolls right and either pitches to Ingram or else passes upfield.

Gerlach is a classic game manager, with a relatively weak arm and limited mobility offset by near-perfect execution and awareness and a very low quotient of mistakes, with interception totals expected to be near zero. Her receivers range from fair to average, with no real standouts among them. Nathan Haynes is a rock, but he serves better as a blocking tight end, while Cliff Pennington has size and strength, but lacks the hands and the speed to be a major playmaker.

The offensive line is strong except at left tackle, arguably the most important position, where two sophomores, Darren Jenkins and Ned Spence, are currently vying for the starting spot and will probably end up switching out. This is good because it means the Matadors have depth, but bad because neither is really ready to be a starter. Lyons has been practicing with Gerlach for two years, and their snap counts are as close to perfect as any.

Seymour Ingram is a talented back, but still too green to be a huge impact. He is, however, emerging as a dual threat, capable of catching passes out of the backfield and working out of the bubble screen. He has speed but cannot push a pile or break tackles with any consistency. Connie Nixon is a brute-force type of fullback, useful only in goal line situations.

Lanny Andrews is one of the few freshman that played football in high school, and also the only who was capable of throwing a spiral
on the first day of summer practice and so earned the backup QB spot. The backup receivers are talented, but extremely green and, in the case of Lavonne Aracelli, annoyingly overconfident. Geoffrey Mitchell is a former track star, and so is fast, but has very limited knowledge of how to do anything but run in a straight line. Thad Rogers is a reasonably competent backup tight end who may see some plays in a twin-TE set.

On special teams, Albert Benjamin is a competent return man, and Cliff Pennington plays as a gunner with frightening alacrity. Maude Morse is a solid kicker with an impressive career long, but she gets maddeningly inconsistent outside of forty-five yards, and her kickoffs leave a lot to be desired.

Defense

Make no bones about it, the Matadors are a defensive team, and most of the team's talent is concentrated on this side of the ball. The defense's base set is a 4-4, with Clarissa Bartlett lining up as a "monster" on the strong side. Bartlett usually has free license to go after the quarterback, fill gaps, or drop into pass coverage as she sees fit. As the defense's signal caller, she also has considerable latitude to adjust plays on the fly.The team's other formation, which they sometimes shift to on the fly, is a 46 with Simon and Nixon set up on the strong side as the jack and charley linebacker, respectively, and Bartlett covering the weak side alongside Knowles.

On the whole, the Matadors' defense trades on its flexibility, which allows it to change plays quickly and react to offensive switches. Bartlett's role as signal-caller also means that the defense is all but immune to the effects of a no-huddle offense. At best, the defense is quick and dynamic, creating a headache for offensive coordinators and quarterbacks; at worst, it is undersized and disorganized, allowing a powerful back or dominant receiver to cut huge swaths down the field.

The defensive line is wholly unremarkable. Virgil Holloway and Hunter Barry are virtually interchangeable, and both have no trouble with average-to-larger offensive linemen, but struggle to get to the quarterback in time to make a difference. Rochelle Chavez is an unsung revelation looking to make a bigger impact as a sophomore; she is fast and technical, capable of wrecking hell on an unprepared tight end. By contrast, Heath Berg is a more by-the-book defensive end, but he is the only freshman starting for a reason.

From weak to strong, the three "true" linebackers are Nixon, Knowles, and Simon, while Bartlett plays in the aforementioned "monster" role. Knowles is a classic middle linebacker, hard-hitting and well-sized but generally lacking in pass coverage. Nixon is one of the team's best athletes, but is generally green and rough in her technique, prone to holding calls. Lynwood Simon is small for a strongside linebacker, but has excellent tackling technique and good field awareness to make up for it.

Ora King generally lines up as a cornerback on the weak side or covering the slowest receiver. He is slow and prone to getting beat, but very difficult to throw past if he manages to keep up with the receiver, and his tackles leave a sting. Les Gentry is the inverse; fast and agile, but loses a lot of ball carriers to weak or poorly-timed tackles. Albert Benjamin, the team's return specialist, occasionally lines up as a nickel back but lacks the technique to vie for a starting spot.

Clarissa Bartlett is technically the strong safety, but she lines up all over the field as the play dictates. She hits hard, runs fast, and reads the field well; overall, she is hands down the best player on the Matadors. Her opposite number, free safety Delmar Reed is an instinctual, reactive player who does everything well besides read the run, and never, ever blitzes.

The defense lacks desperately for depth, with the underclassmen wide receivers tentatively listed as doubling at defensive back, a prognosis that is optimistic at best. Cliff Pennington makes the occasional big hit, but is generally beat off the line in practice, while Chet Perrish and Major Ray are best described as apprentices at linebacker.

Program Overview

The college that would become Yuma University had a storied American football program in the days before the Strange, with many of its players reaching the NFL. The program went by the wayside with the coming of the Strange, along with much of American football in La Mesilla as schools shifted to the more cost-effective sports of association football and basketball. The Matadors are the first varsity football program in La Mesilla since the Strange and the first Mesillano American football team to compete internationally.

The re-emergence of the Matadors football program was inspired by a similar resurgence at La Mesilla Military Institute, LMMI, where a handful of cadets from the school's flag-football club put on a full-tackle, freshmen versus sophomores game to a sellout crowd at LMMI's home field. A similar event was attempted at Yuma, with members of the coeducational Nu Theta fraternity set to play their rivals Upsilon Upsilon Upsilon, only to have Tri-U become suspended indefinitely following a hazing incident.

Nevertheless, the Newts continued to drum up support for a tackle football club, and two years after the abortive Newt-Tri-U game, an undersized Matadors team took on LMMI in a scrimmage and lost 50-0. The following year, sophomore quarterback Damien Cosworth threw the team's first touchdown in a 35-7 loss, and then two consecutive victories.

The next chapter in the life of Matadors football was recognition as a varsity sport by the University. As one of only two four-year universities in La Mesilla, Yuma previously fielded only three varsity teams; collegiate basketball, collegiate soccer, and university soccer. The football team would represent both collegiate and university students, being the only four-year team of its type in La Mesilla, and the only university team to play abroad. The board nevertheless voted to approve the team, and they were allowed to enter NSCF 11 with Damian Cosworth as their head coach.

Though the team has diversified to include many graduates of La Mesilla's burgeoning high school football programs, Nu Theta remains the core, with as much as fifty percent of both organizations being shared blood. Matadors with important roles in the fraternity include defensive captain Clarissa Bartlett, standards chair for the Newts; defensive back and president Delmar Reed; and co-pledge chair and quarterback Sabine Gerlach. The Newts are coeducational and mandated to have fifty-fifty pledge classes; that is, an equal number of male and female members.

The Newts' head coach is Damian Cosworth, formerly the star quarterback and president of Nu Theta. Besides Cosworth and a rotating staff of trainers provided by the University, the team is largely self-coached, with Bartlett and Gerlach running the defense and offense, respectively.

The overall reception of the Matadors' return to varsity competition is positive; the football team has been a major part of campus life since its reemergence and, thanks in large part to Coswell, has done a good job ingratiating itself with both the student body and the administration. Homecoming has been moved from spring to fall by majority student vote to coincide with football season rather than university soccer, previously the most popular sport.

All positions are listed in order as the official depth chart from the South Seas University football program web page.

Honu Offensive bullet points:
  • Offensively, the Honu run a zone read spread offense which takes advantage of creating space for speedy players to make plays.
  • Coach Goose Carneghy is ready to give a bit more freedom to quarterback Ezra Talbot, an enormously gifted and highly recruited player looking to make a big leap in his sophomore year. A natural runner, don't be fooled by the elder of the Talbot brothers. When given the opportunity, Talbot can certainly sling it downfield with a great amount of accuracy as well as take off running on any given snap.
  • The Honu backfield will feature two players prominently, with other half backs mixed in. Senior Samuel Marshall is sure to take the first snaps, but Ezra Talbot's freshman younger brother Jonas will mix in early and often. Both backs utilize their speed not only on between the tackle runs, but also swung out wide and in the short passing game, where screen passes are widely utilized. Power backs Sterling Sparrow and Noa Letulelei hope to gash tired defenses in a complementary role. Moses Gervaise is primarily a passing down back, and will likely find a role as a slot receiver on early downs.
  • The Honu receivers project to be good enough to move the chains despite a real lack of a standout player outside of junior Satchel King. King, with his 6'5", 240 pound frame, has all of the size and speed to be an elite receiver in this format. However, he'll need help from the remaining lackluster receivers if he is going to avoid being double-teamed on every play.
  • King will get a small amount of help on the inside from TE Levi Savage. Savage, a behemoth of a man at 6'7" and 254 pounds, should create a number of mismatches on slower defensive linemen, shorter linebackers, and smaller defensive backs. He projects as a polarizing player who catches a number of first downs and touchdowns.
  • The offensive line is anchored by left tackle Arvel Chambers, center Blaine Cassius, and a number of large Polynesian men in the other three positions. Holokai Kahili will man the left guard position, while twin brothers Kaleo and Kai Kanoa will shore up the right side of the line.
  • The offense will undoubtedly seek to move the chains utilizing the zone read, with runs early and often. To keep the defense on their toes, the zone read will open up plays in the short screen game with wide receiver bubble screens, running back short passes, and tight end screens mixed in. Lookout for these runningbacks though, because if you lose them in coverage they will swing out on a seam route and gash you for thirty yards. Just when the defense has settled in to the short game, quarterback Ezra Talbot will go for the jugular with a long pass to King or an intermediate route from Savage. The other receivers project to hopefully provide enough of a distraction to the defense while they have pedestrian yards and catches.
  • Coach Carneghy has been known to be quite aggressive, routinely electing to go for fourth down plays over punting and even throwing in the occasional two point conversion after touchdowns.

Honu Defensive bullet points:
  • The Honu play a hybrid 3-5-3/3-3-5 defense, again focused on getting speed players to the ball in a hurry.
  • Defensive Coordinator Samson Fisafua has plenty of tricks up his sleeve, and he will look to employ zone blitzes to cause confusion and get unblocked linebackers and defensive ends such as to the quarterback or ball carrier. Physical defensive ends Casey Pendergrass and Wolf Valentine should give offensive linemen a handful, though the 3-5-3 scheme almost certainly guarantees that they will see double teams a fair amount of the time.
  • Linebackers such as junior standout Sequoia Clark, sophomore Gideon Ali'iloa, and senior Baruch Boniface plan to mix liberal pass rushes while Beau Montgomery, Desmond Boothe, and Evander Bautista rotate in to clog up the running and short passing lanes.
  • Senior nose tackle Quentin Vinson will look to shore up the middle of the defensive line, though he will have some stiff competition from freshman freak Roosevelt Calderon. Calderon will undoubtedly mix in on some sort of rotation that takes advantage of his mammoth frame, and Calderon's usage figures to increase as the season progresses.
  • With the hybrid defensive scheme that the Honu are set to employ, there has been no official designation from the official website on players in the defensive backfield. Instead, defensive backs will be asked to play in a myriad of roles.
  • Perhaps the most impressive player in the Honu defensive backfield is Jovante James, a true shutdown corner who will look to make opposing quarterbacks utterly forget about half of the field. Up and comer Francisco De la Cruz and the primarily slot corner Eustace Wellington will certainly see plenty of action as teams try to avoid James on the other side.
  • The entire defense is built on speed, and quick substitutions to all positions project to keep the defensive unit fresh in all levels. Defensive stops will hinge on each player proving to play smartly as the amount of substitutions will force each defensive player to play to their fullest cerebral potential.

Roleplay Permissions
  • Turnovers and players that committed them: Yes
  • Scorers: Yes
  • Type of scores: Yes (I don't even care if you choose five safeties for a score of 10)
  • Injuries: Minor injuries only (defining minor as removing player from the game at hand but available for subsequent games
  • Other: Yes. Feel free to RP missed kicks, going for two rather than an extra point, failed or converted fourth downs, odd play calls, penalties etc. The only thing I care about is things that would potentially remove players from subsequent games, such as injuries, sanctions, or disciplinary action.

Ramusok Capital University (RCU) Dragons

Image

Location: Ramusok, Ramusok, Cosumar

School Size: 47,579 undergraduates

Team History: RCU was one of the original NSCF 1 schools and has participated in all eleven editions of the event, making it one of the most storied programs in NSCF history. Ramusok Capital won its first NSCF Championship last season, the culmination of a long rebuilding process that began after the disappointing NSCF 5. The Dragons now seem to be poised for sustained success and will seek to defend their title this season. Until NSCF 10, RCU's best seasons were a run to the semifinals in NSCF 2 and a Horizon Conference Championship in NSCF 3. However, the Dragons began to decline starting in NSCF 5. NSCF 7 was an all time low for the University and led to the firing of head coach Barry Feldman. NSCF 8/9 saw incremental improvement, but they truly restored their former standard of excellence in NSCF 10. Senior quarterback Brandon Reigner, who led the comeback victory in the Championship game, was drafted into the CFL this summer and RCU will have to prove it can still thrive offensively without him.

Stoneshore College Bruins

Image

Location: Cape Dutch, Stoneshore, Cosumar

School Size: 25,645 undergraduates

Team History: Always in the shadow of Big Brother RCU, the Bruins had a poor debut in NSCF 2, and had never even reached the postseason until NSCF 10. Last year, they won their first Horizon Conference Championship with a 9-1 regular season record. It seemed as if the balance of power was shifting between the Cosumarite schools. But then the Bruins got bounced in the first round and watched from home as RCU went on to steal back the spotlight and win the whole league. But spirits are higher than ever in Cape Dutch this season. Legendary CFL coach Walter Hufnagel has clearly turned things around in his two seasons there, and recently brought in the most touted recruiting class in school history.

From Jason Dunz, Team Head Coach

Where are we? Conquerer's Academy Wolves are the most successful school team in The Sword Bloke. Our Main Ground is Conquerer's Academy, Angelou Campus, Capacity 8,000 Fans, but due to the large attendance expected at our games, we have rented the 86,000 capacity Orbett Stadium, 1km away from Conquerer's Academy for our home games this season. We will still train at our traditional ground however. Our HQ is at 63 James Fawkner Way, Angelou.

Xatz, being large cats, play American football or Uumf'uufa (which literally translates as 'other rugby'), due to their different physiology, in quite a distinct way. Also, with Heqrouw being a rugby stronghold within Xzyxrouw (see here), this is even exaggerated somewhat within this team.

Offensively, Xatz, being quadropeds with no opposable thumbs, carry the ball mot commonly by wedging it into their neck and holding it in place with their chin. Some will however hold it in this place with a front paw and a select few (as well as the Arfi members of the team) grasp the ball within their jaws. Due to this unpredictable method of ball-carrying, fumbles are rife but usually the lightning reactions of the Xatz keep the negative impacts of this to a minimum. Due to an inability to pass the ball long distances, the Xat offense is very reliant upon its running backs and will possibly overuse these. However, due to their enhanced agility and speed, even the tiniest defensive hole can be exploited to a devestating degree.
Another key aspect of the Xat offense is the use of the lateral pass, another implemented aspect from rugby. Again, the likelihood of fumbles and possibly even interceptions looms large but some of these plays are evilly deceptive as tight ends and wide receivers give looping runs providing dummy opportunities. Even guards and tackles, if they break free of their opponents can join in some of the longer drawn-out pass-fests.

Defensively, they're cats ... You ever seen a cat hunt? It's in their nature and they're ruthlessly good at it. The safety players especially will roam in the deep and are dangerously strong. In all seriousness, taking a knee before they pounce might be a good idea if you value your bones and/or are averse to having whiplash.
Also, the linebackers can jump quite high and though their catching's not brilliant, they can certainly knock many an errant pass out of the air

The Special team consists of two Arfi members of the Gymnasium doing their entry level qualifications in cleaning (it's a joke of a degree designed to show how accepting they are of the Arfi race.) Anyway, the Arfi are a race of large dog. Generally stupid, but very obedient. The team will usually avoid kicking unless absolutely necessary as their kicker is an Arf who headbutts the ball as hard as he can and it's not particularly effective. The allocated holder however, is quite a capriccious character and sometimes will decide to have a go at running the ball in a completely unpredictable kick-fake. No-one ever calls for it, he just does it when he feels like. Maybe he looks up to the Xat players, maybe he's simply bored of just being the holder. No-one really knows but he's just as quick and agile as the Xatz so you may want to keep that in mind should the Xatz opt for a field goal attempt as he has been known to get a touchdown before ...

Kuuraorhaofskahryna; The Home Stadium

The Kuuraorhaofskahryna is a pretty Spartan affair. Xatz don't make the best groundskeepers in truth. Missing divots, the odd inexplicable pot-hole and large sods of tough grass. The stands are also some hideous edifice in poured cement with the occasional tree sprouting from a crack. As regards the player's changing rooms, they're not for the prudish. Basically, it's a fenced enclosure with a sandpit in the corner (the sandpit being a Xati toilet). That's it. Oh, as they realise that not all species wash themselves with their tongues, a small bucket of (cold and possibly slightly stagnant) water will be provided for your after-match hygiene needs. Be sure to share.
No serious injuries or deaths please. Everything else fine. Any truly crazy ideas, i.e. if you have a cool idea but aren't sure whether I'd be cool with it, drop me a TG. I'm surprisingly accommodating for utter madness if it sounds fun. Any queries regarding the Xatz or the Arfz, drop me a TG. Any queries regarding American football, drop someone else a TG. I'm a Brit whose main experience of American Football is watching the superbowl one or twice and getting infuriated with Madden 2005 (2004? Can't remember) for the gamecube. Bare this in mind anyone who wants to rip apart my Xat tactics as ridiculously unfeasible (as she-who-won't-be-Califan-Sprawls-named already has done ...)

After a decade of dynasty under 45-year-old coach Aaron King in the RCFA, the Golden Eagles looked to face higher competition, extending their season. The Golden Eagles have been dominant on the recruiting trail for years in Rhymencia, and we're about to see how they will fare against more prominent competition in NSCF. Let's get to the offensive and defensive predictions!

Offense

Historically, the Golden Eagles have been better on the defensive side of the ball, and fielding an (sometimes above) average offense. This comes with the exception of last year in the RCFA (Rhymencia's college football league). Last year, Aaron Ward, the 6-6 248 pound dual threat quarterback (recruited as a MLB and QB), set many records in the RCFA for the best season in history, throwing for 4567 yards and 46 touchdowns, and winning 3 awards. However, he had the two most prolific receivers in school history in 6'7", 244-pound monster Robert Brown, who provided for many mismatches over his career, and Adam Murphy, who was drafted 7th in the professional draft this year. Ward will not be as productive as last year, but will have a respectable season .

The offense uses a "shot" offense (used only in the country), making use of decent route-runners, an excellent offensive line, and a decent decision-maker at the quarterback position. King, the coach, is at his best recruiting very talented players on the line of scrimmage, and then recruits around it. Simply put, the offensive linemen are excellent at making holes and keeping pressure off the quarterback. The o-line is also HUGE - the average starter is 320 pounds. The run game has never been the best in the RFCA, but always been average or above average. David Garcia will be the main back you'll see - and he gets the job done. The Golden Eagles led the nation in 3rd down conversion percentage because Garcia could find a way to get past the marker. He is not going to be the best halfback in NSCF, but he'll be on par.

The receiving corps is not as good in years past (or that good at all this year), with only 2 upperclassmen this year, and this is why Ward won't have a stellar season like last year, but 6'4" Justin Rowe could be a matchup problem for a short cornerback. Look for Rowe to have a 800 yard, 8 TD type of season. Also, look for Marcus Flores to have a breakout season as he becomes a starter for the Golden Eagles' offense thanks to departures from the top two receivers. Now, on to TE, where Jordan Parrish will be starting for the 3rd straight year. If there is a star of this offense, Parrish is. Parrish is a modern-day tight end - the one that punishes run-stopping linebackers who can't cover well. At 6'1" and 256 lbs, he is essentially a receiver with an extra 50 pounds on him. He can make plays, and the product of a 5 star tight end. He is going to be Ward's top target in the season. To review, the receivers will not be that great this year, and two players will get the ball most of the time in the air.

Defense

Defensive Coordiator Marcus Harrison runs a classic 4-3 defense, and relies on his ends to get to the QB - and quick. Defensive ends Leonard Armstrong (a gifted pass-rusher) and Rian Chandler are great at downing the quarterback quickly, and tackles Larry Owens and Nick Moyer are men among boys and punishing run-stoppers. The players on the line of scrimmage are the most talented group of players out of the whole defense. These ends and tackles have an incredibly deep bench behind them if they become worn out during the game. This is what happens when you bring in 3 5-star defensive linemen in the past four years. This and the o-line are the two most talented units for this football team. Next, the linebackers.

The linebacking unit has never been stressed as an important position to recruit, and it shows. The best linebacker is going to be Evan Smith, who can take down a running back but will be dominated by receiving tight ends. Blitzing is not used much in this defense. A major weakness will be middle linebacker, where the three players in the position are freshmen. Cameron Thorne has never played a snap of college football in his life. He is a modern-day linebacker that is better at coverage than he is running through the holes and making a big stop on third down. Next is Cody Sykes, who is an average linebacker. Depth will be a problem throughout the season. This year, if offenses want to attack the Eagles, they will be attacking the middle (and probably the safeties too, as they are weak and not very deep.) In the coming years, look for 6'7", 247 lb shutdown corner linebacker Richie Davis to get all over tight ends. He won't get much playing time this year, but could come on to the field to play corner and keep abnormally tall receivers from making too many big plays if 6'4" corner Sean Walton can't handle them.

The cornerbacks are one of the two strong suits of this defense. The two starters played at an All-Rhymencian level last season coming off the bench. We'll see if they can compete with the unbelievable talent they face this season against more speedy, agile receivers than what they are used to seeing. However, Larry Russell is a speedy pest who can lock down half the field at times. If he is consistent this year, he'll be an important player for the face of this defense. On the other side of the field, 6'4" Sean Walton. He is not the fastest and doesn't cover too well, but can get away sometimes because of his abnormal height and great jumping ability. Other times uses his frame to hunt down players who beat him to the ball. Players can catch with him on them, but rarely are they getting more than 10 yards after the catch, unless he mistimes his hit on the receiver. The bench is deep, with 6'3" upperclassmen Bruce Williams ready to go at the 3rd depth position. There are also a couple of sophomores who can make stops after the catch or during a (rare) CB blitz.

Safeties are weak this year. With Tony Salem gone after a stellar season last year, there is no standout safety. With that said, Senior Ray Harris can compete, but has proved to be inconsistent over the course of his career. If teams take the "risk" of throwing the deep ball, players covered by safeties will most likely get a catch, unless they are a backup. If teams have a powerful run game and get by most of our team and have the two safeties to beat, they will most likely end up beating them because of the lack of talent. This is the weakest group on this team, but safety will be a focus in this year's recruiting. The Golden Eagles are looking at a few top prospects who could turn safety back into a strength for this defense.

All positions are listed in order as from the official depth chart from the Chena University football program web page.

Nanooks bullet points:
  • Nanook Field, with its blue artificial turf, is one of the more unique venues in college football. This outdoor sporting facility located in the capital of Yukon River Wilderness is so far north that it often is covered with snow and sees temperatures of -40 degrees during the college football season. The truly inclement weather of this complex gives the Nanooks one of the best home field advantages in all of organized sports.
  • The remote nature of Chena University and Yukon River Wilderness as a whole equates to a small fan base and recruiting presence for the Nanooks. While the Nanooks have very few highly recruited players, the players that they do utilize have bought fully into the schemes of a coaching staff who are especially talented at bringing out the best in each player. While most teams have a more purely talented roster, one would be hard pressed to find a team that plays with more heart.
  • Given the field conditions at Nanook Field, it is no surprise that the team's playing style is very heavily favored on the side of defense. Schematically, the Nanook defense utilizes a 4-4 base aimed primarily at completely bottling up the opposing running game, something which the Nanooks do with excellence. Linebackers and defensive linemen will substitute frequently, keeping the defensive base fresh. For those teams who dare to throw in the Arctic chill where the prospect of completing passes is already compromised, opposing receivers will be blanketed by a rotating set of above average defensive backs, one of the few positions where the Nanooks are particularly strong, or at least given the weather conditions on the home turf. Outside of Nanook field, however, defensive backs are certain to be tested in the more favorable weather conditions of opposing stadiums. Overall, the defensive unit should be the deciding factor in most of this team's games.
  • What little offense there is to speak of will follow in the success of the defensive unit. The Nanooks will look to utilize a triple option offense that takes advantage of sizable offensive linemen. Within the triple option itself, any running back on the field is a threat to touch the ball, including full backs. Of importance will also be quarterback runs, as well as infrequent runs from tight ends. The Nanooks will look to utilize both speed runs to the perimeter as well as the power option up the middle. Though this team will only throw about 15% of the time, 6”6” junior Dorian Nelson provides a sizable target with which the Nanooks hope to create mismatches. Tight ends and fullbacks will otherwise dominate short passing plays.

For OOC purposes, Chena University Nanooks counts as a second team for Costa Aluria
Who the heck is Yukon River Wilderness you might ask? Also known as Costa Aluria.

The team is a perennial contender in Abanhfleft's NCAA system, and has won at least seven titles in the last twelve years. New College Football Season on the Horizon for Honu
Story by Abraham Shepherd

Mosaic—For the South Seas University Honu, a new challenge awaits in the sporting world as the upcoming NSCF season is nearly underway. The Honu, who played the entirety of their previous games in relative obscurity at a lesser level of competition, will look to make a big entrance into the NCSF. Placed in the competitive Horizon Conference, the Honu hope they have what it takes to succeed at the next level.

They'll need to be more than good if they are going to win this conference and advance to the NSCF playoffs however. The conference is well balanced between teams adept at either offense or defense, so there will be relatively little advantage gained by playing one style of football over another.

Even more daunting, the Honu will face some very good teams within the Horizon conference. Early highlights of the schedule include a matchday two road clash with defending champion Ramusok Capital, as well as a matchday seven rematch at The Plumeria Garden. Additionally, the Honu will twice face the number four ranked Bruins of Stoneshore College, as well as a non-conference game at number five ranked St. Croix. The Honu will finish the season finale on the road at third ranked St. Augustinus.

While details are still developing, Head Coach Goose Carneghy has indicated that the Honu are aggressively trying to schedule additional out-of-conference games to finish the regular season. "We know going into this that it is hard for a new team to gain the momentum needed to have a good season and to attract more recruits," Carneghy stated at a recent press conference. "We also know that to be the best you have to beat the best. We've got some offers out to some very good teams. Our hope is to prove to the NSCF world that we are ready to play anybody, anywhere so that we too can be considered in that conversation for the greatest team."

Carneghy will need considerable play from his sophomore quarterback Ezra Talbot and the rest of the offensive unit if he plans on making a big impact this year. He plans on opening up the offense more than in previous years to accomplish this feat. "Ezra is a very good quarterback," he went on to say in the press conference. "We know we are going to need everything from him if we are going to succeed." Carneghy also hinted that if things go well, there could be an onslaught of explosive plays coming from the signal caller. "We want to help Ezra get his feet under him as he adjusts to the speed of the major conferences. But depending on how quickly he covers that learning curve, we might see about pushing the limits of our offense."

The Honu will have their first home game of the season in matchday three. Tickets are still available through the South Seas University ticket sports ticket office, or through The Plumeria Garden Website.

This is a developing story. The South Seas Sentinel will update this story as details become available.

Just after dawn on the first day of classes, Sabine Gerlach found herself lining up at a position she thought she'd ditched at the beginning of last offseason, when she'd finally taken on the mantle of cue-bee-one from Damien. For four years of high school she'd carried the title of "nickelback", which sounded great but never translated into any actual playing time, owing largely to her being the only girl on the team of sixty players. In college, she'd joined the football team with high hopes of actually maybe playing in a game, but instead had found herself relegated to backup quarterback, which meant a lot of practicing with the scout team and getting told not to throw the ball so hard. Last year she'd got some playing time at her old position, racked up a couple of tackles, but spent most of her time in Damien's shadow.

Now she was the starting quarterback, and with that came responsibility, and finally some goddamn recognition. No one had cared who she was as the backup because Damien was the starter, but now that he was out of the picture, she heard "cue-bee-one" more often than her own name. The school paper had run a story about her in its final issue before summer vacation, and she'd had offers to do radio interviews in the interim, offers she'd turned down because she had work to do on her father's ranch back in Lordsburg.

Now, in her basketball shorts, black tank top, and pink sneakers, she watched as her freshman backup, Lanny, pretended to take a snap from an invisible center. The wide receiver she was covering ran three strides out and attempted to cut to his right, but he telegraphed the move so well he might as well have stopped and asked her for directions. Lanny still attempted the pass, and Sabine laid out for it, snatching it so smoothly it might have been intended for her. He looked at her with hurt in his eyes, as though she shouldn't have dared to intercept his pass, no matter how sloppy, but on the other side of the field, Clarissa nodded curtly.

"Again," she said in her scratchy voice.

Sabine got into position with a sideways glance at Clarissa, who, unbeknownst to the oblivious receiver she was covering, had shifted several yards closer to Lanny. The snap went back and Clarissa bum-rushed the freshman, leaving her receiver uncovered but closing in on him with her four-point-six-second forty-yard time. Lanny started to cock the ball back, but froze as she approached, accepting her hit like an embrace. He got up, dusted off, and looked a little surprised when Clarissa said, "Again."

This time he was ready for her. He rolled out to his left, Sabine's side, and gave a pump fake in her direction that was almost believable, then put his head down and ran. Clarissa was on top of him in a second, but when he got up this time, he'd gained five yards. Much better.

The rest of morning practice was unremarkable, at least until Sabine got out of the showers. In the hallway outside the locker room, a tallish boy with a pockmarked face was waiting for her, his arm around a tiny blonde girl with eyes so blue and round they looked like they belonged to a doll. Sabine did her best to feign excitement at seeing her cousin Albert, the team's return specialist, though in truth she wasn't sure if she'd rather talk to him or be half an hour early to her stats class.

"Hi Albert," she said. "You're up early."

"I told Lavonne I'd work with him on return stuff." Lavonne Aracelli was the freshman Clarissa had been covering in their drill, a spoiled track star who thought his speed made him too good for hard-nosed football. Of course he thought he could play return. "Anyway, there's someone I want you to meet."

Sabine scanned the girl on her cousins' arm for any sign of who she might be or why she would waste her time with Albert. Sabine loved Albert as family, but most of the time she was glad to be related to him and therefore off-limits to his painfully awkward romantic advances. He had actually rushed her fraternity their freshman year, but been denied a bid because he wouldn't leave the female rushes alone when he was instructed to.

"Hi," said the girl, her voice high and saccharine, "I'm Rosalyn. I've heard so much about you."

Notes (OOC)

St. Augustinus, like all universities in Saintland, operates on a 3-year system. As Sanctii time is identical to RL time, St. Augustinus players will be on a season of eligibility system (with a limit of 4 seasons) rather than the more conventional year of eligibility system. ICly, first year students are now barred from participating on the St. Augustinus NSCF team and students are limited to participating in a total of 4 seasons of NSCF while enrolled at St. Augustinus. The St. Augustinus athletic programs are nicknamed the Priests because St. Augustinus specializes in theological education. Due to the relatively low enrollment at St. Augustinus, the Priests field a fairly small roster.

With the recent influx in enrollment from the Holy Republican Empire, the numerous colonies of the H.R.E. and IesusisGodistan, most of the students at St. Augustinus are not actually from Saintland any longer and the gridiron team's roster reflects that.

Notes

The class names at Army Academy mean the following:

Plebe - Freshman (ineligible to play, but can practice with team)
Yuk - Sophomore
Cow - Junior
Firstie - Senior

The Army Academy, also known as East Point, is a military academy in the Holy Republican Empire. Students, known as Cadets, attend free of charge and must receive a recommendation from a Senator in order to be admitted. While the Academy emphasizes military training, Cadets also receive a high-quality college education. Upon graduation, Cadets are required to join the Republican Army for a minimum of 5 years. Most remain in the Army as officers and many of them go on to climb the ranks. The decision to enter NSCF was driven partially by a desire to compete against a higher level of competition, at a time when Republican service academy football is relatively strong, historically-speaking, but also by a desire to gather intelligence on the nations of the multiverse that could be useful for future military operations.

The football team's style of play tends to be very conservative, as one would expect from a military academy. In particular, Army uses offensive and defensive schemes from the mid-20th century. On offense, their base formation uses 2 halfbacks and a fullback. The split end is, roughly, the equivalent of a wide receiver, as is the flanker. The difference between a split end and a flanker is that a split end starts on the line of scrimmage while a flanker sets up behind the line (both are simply referred to as wide receivers in modern offensive schemes). On defense, their primary formation is the 5-2 Eagle, which uses 5 defensive linemen, 2 outside linebackers and no middle linebacker. However, they can shift, if needed, into the 5-2 Oklahoma, which is basically an early version of the 3-4.

Mar Sara Tech Looking To Shake Up The Established Order

Mar Sara Tech made waves a little while back when they and Raynor University entered into the NSCAA, along with a few other universities, and went on to dominate their conferences and perform admirably in the Championship tournament. With that success, the university president decided to enter the gridiron squad into the NSCF, with the blessings of the VSC of course. The school has had their entry accepted and were placed into the Mineral conference, as well as given a top 30 ranking in the "preseason" poll. It is obvious that the Raiders will have to do some convincing of outsiders that they and elves as a whole are equipped to take on the challenge that the more established schools from across the world provide.

In order to help show the merit of the squad, the Raiders have taken advantage of all three slots available for nonconference games, lining up the elite Army Academy from The Holy Republican Empire at their field. The Academy is among the most established and well known of schools, a school definitely that commands respect for how well they play the game with their hard nose, conservative style that is in stark contrast to the Raiders pro passing but balanced offense and pass defense. A clash of styles it will be when the upstart Raiders go into East Point and look to grab some respect from across the world with a good showing.

In conference play, the Raiders will be playing a pair of schools from Greater Vakolicci Haven, as well as a school each from The Sword Bloke, Vettrera, and Estinia. It is not the most prestigious of teams nor conferences, as displayed by the rankings that the schools have in the preseason poll, with the likelyhood of only the champion of the school heading into the playoff format being employed. The Raiders feel confident that they will be able to emerge as the champions of the conference, yet those boasts will need to be backed up on the gridiron. It is not outside the realm of possibility, for certain, but this will be the first time that they have played schools outside of Valanora, meaning the level of competition has been raised. The ante is up! Can the Raiders rise to meet the raised stakes or will it be shown that gridiron is indeed too much of a physical game for the likes of elves?

Daniel Corsey announced his intention to retire at the end of NSCF 11, following another disappointment in OCGL this past spring. Utica dominated the Tubrissian Division, and were among the favourites -- despite losing several starters to graduation following their run to the championship game in NSCF 10 -- but fell at the first hurdle in the playoffs. Burningham University's dominant running game shredded through the Tigers' now weakened run defense, further depleted through injury, and Corsey conceded that he didn't have the energy left to embark on a full rebuild. "I'm an old man, I don't have the energy I used to, it's time for me to step aside." Corsey said. "The loss to Burningham drove it home for me. I didn't manage to co-ordinate a good rebuild after last season, and it cost us. The team did what they could, but some of those guys just weren't ready yet. That's on me."

There is no confirmation on who will take over as head coach once Corsey finalises his retirement, but his successor will be inheriting a roster packed with potential. Freshman quarterback Kendrick Lloyd is tipped for great things, though he'll be waiting at least until next OCGL season, with Brendon Hogan replacing Maurice Henderson under center. Alexander Logan's dynamism was invaluable in OCGL, but the coaching staff is disinclined to risk him for another thirteen games (at least!) given the number of close shaves the youngster faced in spring. "Alex is resting up a bit. There are certain circumstances I think we might prefer to use him, but we're confident that Brendon is more than capable. There's not much between them, just that Brendon doesn't like to scramble as much." Offensive Co-Ordinator Alex Hardison explained.

With the return of hated rivals University of Arkinesia to NSCF, and the Woodlands conference, Utica might have rekindled that fire that drove them to establish themselves as the dominant program in the first five years of NSCF competition. "It's been a while." Defensive Co-Ordinator Anthony Channa said. "UArk are always tough, and after we swept the conference last season, I did wonder how we'd top that, but beating the Wyverns might just do it." Of course, there is an expectation that the fresher Tigers should come out on top against their old rivals, but their clashes have historically proven nigh on impossible to predict, and are sure to be exciting viewing again.

The punt went high and skewed left, but Albert got a good handle on it and managed to advance it eight yards before he got pushed out of bounds near the fifty. Tech's offense had gotten the ball at the twenty from touch back and proceeded to stall, unable to get beyond the pressure from the Matadors' defense. So far, their scheme had worked perfectly; neither team had scored, but the 'birds had been on their back foot all afternoon while Yuma brought the 46, stacking linebackers outside the pocket to force plays. Clarissa was a monster, as always, shutting down coverage on that side of the field.

The offense took the field to much cheering from the sidelines, and utter indifference from the crowd. Neither offense had really gotten an traction yet, with only a few first down scattered haphazardly across the first half. Now, with barely two minutes left in the half, it appeared to be the last chance not to go into the half scoreless. The first play was a bust; a typical bootleg with the pitch to Ingram, who got swallowed up right at the line by a cornerback who saw him coming a mile away. The next was a surprise; Gerlach on the keeper, rolling up the middle between Darren Jenkins and Harley Lyons, left tackle and center, respectively, getting brought down after five yards.

It was the next play that broke the game open; Gerlach faked the handoff to Ingram, who barreled up the field while the linebackers blitzed, looking to collapse the pocket. One of them got to the quarterback, but not before she lobbed a pass over the heads of the defensive tackles to Ingram, who was completely uncovered by the linebackers. Ingram broke up the field, shagged his way past a diving cornerback, and kept going until he was wrapped up by the free safety in the red zone.

The score seemed automatic at that point, but the Matadors had to work for it yet, bringing out Connie Nixon to smash holes in the defense before a shovel pass to the weak side on third down caught the defense off-balance and Cliff managed to hold off the weak linebacker long enough for Seymour to pile his way into the end zone for six. With twenty-five seconds remaining in the half, Maude Morse kicked the extra point and the 'dors went up 7-0.

The second half was more of a grind than the first, if that was possible, with neither offense capable of making big plays, the Matadors' because of a lack of explosiveness and the Thunderbirds' because of the Matadors' D. Early in the fourth, Clarissa Bartlett, playing as an ersatz linebacker, snagged a weak pass to the middle of the field and beat the quarterback deep to sprint into the end zone. However, as she approached the end zone, she held the ball behind her to taunt the offensive players that chased her, and got an unsportsmanlike call for her trouble, fifteen yards from the spot of the foul. The offense stalled on the succeeding drive and settled for a twenty-seven-yard field goal, the Matadors' last points for the game.
