Worst Person in History

Postby Sanctissima » Sun Feb 01, 2015 2:35 pm

History is full of interesting events, glorious battles, the marvels of human achievement and overall intriguing stuff. That said, it's also home to a fair share of assholes. Be they dictators, tyrants or rampaging warlords, history is no stranger to the resident dick.

Several notable examples:

-Hitler: Instigated a genocidal campaign to rid the world of, well, pretty much everyone he didn't like. Also guilty of sporting an ugly mustache.

-Stalin: Power-hungry to the core. Orchestrated the Soviet Union's Great Purges. Millions of political dissidents either executed, sent to gulags or spontaneously disappeared. Be they kinsmen, family or friends, if you didn't see eye to eye with Stalin, you'd quickly find yourself in some obscure Siberian labor camp.

-Genghis Khan: Forefather of what would become the largest empire the world has ever seen. Widely applauded as religiously tolerant and a proponent of a semi-meritocratic system of government. Also widely deplored as a ravenous tyrant who massacred populations whole, razed cities to the ground and really liked to rape princesses. So many people died as a result of his campaigns that carbon levels plummeted and forests actually regrew in depopulated areas. Few dictators can call themselves environmentalists.

-Attila the Hun: Ravenous warlord, responsible for millions of deaths and the extermination of entire ethnicities. Sadistic to the core and liked killing for fun. He also liked gold, lots and lots of gold. Became the world's first mafia boss, usually demanding bribes from the Roman Empire in exchange for not burning their cities to the ground.

So, who do you think was the worst of the worst? The utmost deplorable person in the history of humanity. Although mass murder and causing widespread chaos isn't a must, in this case, it's a good resume builder.

I want to punch Hitler in his chin, the slack-jawed punk. Walking around with his mouth open. He was the worst man in history.

It's hard to really quantify which single person was the "worst" in history, because different people might have different definitions of what qualifies as "worse". For the purposes of this thread, are we defining "worst" as "highest death toll"?

Not necessarily.

Basically, who in your opinion was the worst human being in history? Preferably, your choice will be based on a multitude of factors (sadism, corruption, mass murder, etc.) and not just one aspect, but the choice is entirely up to you.

I mean, Julius Caesar at least deserves an honorable mention.
Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.
We have nothing to lose but the world. We have our souls to gain.

I have no idea who the worst person in history was, but it wasn't Temujin. As mentioned by the OP, he allowed religious tolerance, spread an advanced societal structure throughout the medieval world and formed a meritocratic system of governance. Mongol law was based upon the idea that those of rank should face the hardships as commoners and that itself should be applauded as revolutionary for the time.

No, I would not like to stand against the brutality and destruction of the Mongol Empire - But I know that I would much rather live under the Great Khan than any other leader of the time.

I'm not sure. Throughout history, there have been monstrous men and leaders, and terrible people who weren't in any position of power. There have been so many brutal historical figures, that I simply can't choose one.

Nobody.

Every period of history has had its own brand of evil people we remember because of how evil they were, and even the victors of today were not that great either.

That doesn't make one of them worse than another, simply more relevant.

Justin Bieber. An arrogant, childish bastard that deserves no recognition.

Being serious, I'd say I want to rip off Hitler's face, beat him and then spit on him. Same with Stalin and Mao. They murdered so many people and were very totalitarian.

But that might seem a bit excessive. The damage cannot be undone with beating, ripping and spitting. Only with reviving dead people. As far as we know, that's impossible. So these people may requiescat in pace.
