I can't really see why they can't both coexist.
Dissing everything about its recent cultural production is certainly being ignorant about important things. There are so many series from there that should have made a much deeper impact in the world for their content than many very successful American film productions. Their artists are also often fucking awesome.

That still doesn't explain why should I pay more attention to their cultural scene than, say, Iran's.

Well, but that really doesn't matter, does it? If I had a real for every time a Brazilian said or wrote that people in Rio dancing naked and acting like animals are a moral stain and a problem for our international reputation...

Hell, it isn't even the Japanese people themselves that are to blame sometimes. Them weeaboos make them look bad as well. Does Brazilian culture have a problem of weeaboos? I don't think so.

They can worm their way into popularity because they're made from a more culturally-conservative viewpoint, if you will, than American programs, and yet at the same time have a kind of cultural universalism to them that makes them more accessible to people around the world than would, say, Indian films (which, despite the fact that some of them are excellent, are nevertheless extremely Indian). And, moreover, many K-dramas are made explicitly for a female audience. I read a very interesting article by Gary Brechter about how Saudi women are soaking up K-dramas.

If telenovelas were the sign of a grip on the world through cultural soft power, we're fine on that...

Aurinsula wrote:As for Cool Japan, I don't see it. Japanese animation has been circling the drain for about 15 years as it becomes ever more self-absorbed and self-referential. If Japan today is producing anything, other than the handful of cinema masterpieces that I know they still have the power to create from time to time, that can appeal to adult non-Japanese - especially adult non-Japanese women - then I haven't seen it.
