F.B.I. cracks Russian Spy Ring

Postby Organized States » Tue Jan 27, 2015 4:11 am

Source

Profile: Russian agents' all-American lives
The FBI has charged three men it says were spying for Russia and trying to recruit sources in New York City.

US prosecutors say Evgeny Buryakov, 39, was part of an alleged spy ring that included two others in the US on official business.

The other two named defendants, Igor Sporyshev and Victor Podobnyy, no longer reside in the US.

Mr Buryakov, who worked at Russian bank in Manhattan, is scheduled to appear in court later on Monday.

He is accused of attempting to gain intelligence about potential United States sanctions against Russian banks and the US efforts to develop alternative energy resources.

Mr Buryakov also allegedly recruited Americans to spy for Russia, including several people "employed by major companies" and "several young women with ties to a major university in New York".

Mr Sporyshev and Mr Podobnyy, who held official positions as representatives of the Russian government in the US, were accused of working with Mr Buryakov since 2012 in passing on information and developing other recruits.

The investigation was an offshoot of a 2010 case that ended with the arrest and deportation of 10 "deep cover" agents in a spy swap with Russia.

In a statement, Attorney General Eric Holder said the charges "demonstrate our firm commitment to combating attempts by covert agents to illegally gather intelligence and recruit spies within the United States".

Well, hi Russian Spy Ring! Well, it's unfortunate that we couldn't get all of the suspects named, but I do think that this is a pretty fair test of our intelligence capability and is another chapter in the F.B.I. and Russian Spy tango. Though I don't think this is on the same scale as the Cold War era spying that alot of people still remember, it is still a worthy note to take.

So, what's your take NSG? Not feeling the Clancy in this one? Ebul US Government attacking Russian Citizens for no other reason? Not a big deal?

Russian intelligence agencies are simply too good to ever get caught, they must've been double crossed because those people outlived their usefulness. The only ones better at spying are possibly Israel's Mossad.

I wonder if they were able to gather more valuable intel than the apparently trivial nonsense Anna Chapman and her spy ring had claimed as their prize.

Apparently, the Russians tried to honeytrap Edward Snowden with her. Could be just gossip though.

More like this banker was an amateur who did a half-assed job covering up the fact that he was spying for the Russians, and the two professionals realized this and decided to split before the FBI blew the thing wide open.

Evidently that would be false by all the examples throughout history of Soviet and later Russian rings being discovered.

I assume Russia has no open border and requires a visa to go anywhere.
Who assesses visa applications? Not only your destination country, but the origin country too.

That has proven demonstrably false over several decades. Many Soviet and later, Russian spies have been apprehended in the US.
