Eyes on the Stars (OOC, PMT, Open)(Seeking Mars Colonies!)

Eyes on the Stars
Theme
IC Link

It is 2080, and Humanity is scattered across the Solar System. Huddled in the remaining colonies and military bases, these colonists are what remains of Humanity's Future. Earth is dead, destroyed by both war and the greed of Man. A few scattered survivors may remain, but they are far removed from the 9+ billion that once walked upon the Earth. She will recover from what man has done, but by that time Humanity will either have died out, or have changed so much that they wouldn't be Human any more.

It wasn't always like this. At the start of this century, Humanity's future was optimistic, Technology was progressing at a rate never before seen, and though there were problems, most people expected to have technology save them. These hopes would be dashed soon enough. During the 2020's, massive famines struck much of the globe, and many poorer nations collapsed under the strain. Some of the richest nations took this as a warning sign, and built up vast reserves of supplies, in case they were needed. A few saw the true path the Earth was taking, and funded Space colonization programs.

The first human settlers arrived on Mars in 2045. These first few settlers would soon be accompanied by more of their kind, along with miners and the militaries of some countries. This emphasis on space allowed these nations and programs to develop better and safer spacecraft. By 2060, the beginning of the Great Earth Collapse, colonies had been established in the Asteroid belt and on the four largest Moons of Jupiter. Even Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, was colonized. Technology would have pushed farther, but by now, the few nations that had Space programs had collapsed into oblivion.

The past twenty years have been hard on the colonies of Earth, many collapsed due to starvation or dehydration, but some colonies were left unscathed. The future belongs to these colonies, whose Eyes are on the stars.

Rules

  • No Godmodding.
  • Stay realistic!
  • Have decent grammar.
  • At least a decent (5-7 sentences) paragraph per post.

Guidelines

  • Your colonies should start with a few thousand people at most.
  • Food is important. As are resources. Securing a supply of both is vital to any colony.
  • Space isn't weaponized yet. The space-planes that allow transit around the Solar System do not have weapons on them ... yet.
  • Have fun.

Colony Types

Before the Great Collapse, a wide variety of colonies existed, and though many colonies have been evacuated or have collapsed, the remaining types of colonies fall into the following categories:

Population - A population colony was used by the colonizing nation to be a combination of a city and a prison, sending political prisoners off to the colony to stop rising dissent at home. These are the largest colonies, but are limited in resources and weaponry. These colonies produce enough to sustain themselves, and may have enough weapons to make a small militia, or jury-rig a few combat rovers.

Production - A production colony was used by the colonizer to extract minerals and refine them for both use on-world and off. These colonies contain the necessary resources, machines, and workers to both replace and produce new goods. Most suffer from a severe lack of food, however, and most weapons are either made of mining equipment or are inferior replicas of actual guns.

Military - A military colony is what a nation would call an outpost. It has an excess of weapons and ammunition, and have access to trained soldiers. They lack almost everything else though, with most bases simply being equipped with a water-recycler/purifier and oxygen-recycler/purifier. Food is mostly derived from rationed MREs from base stockpiles, and from occasional trading from the next type of colony.

Agriculture - An agriculture colony is a facility equipped with all the necessary equipment to grow crops. These colonies also require a local source of CO2 and of Water, both easily found in the solar system. The colonies lack much in the way of weaponry, possessing at most a small armory with a few rifles and armored spacesuits, and lack production facilities for anything besides food production.

Research - The last type of colony would be the Research colony. Essentially an off-world scientific think-tank, these colonies possess the mental talent to innovate in many fields. They are decently armed, but scientists usually aren't very good soldiers. These stations are equipped to feed the staff as well, but is completely lacking in production facilities.

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a considerate idealistic egalitarian with many strong convictions.

May I reserve Io?

Nation Name: Neo-Assyrian Empire
Colony Name: The Republic of Europa (Formerly known as ERO Code Name BMJ-01)
Colony Location: Europa
Government Type: An Absolute Geniocracy. Once Earth went dark and contact with the other colonies were sketchy at best, the remaining scientists decided to vote the smartest and the wisest among them to power. They call it an Absolute Geniocracy, but it has devolved more into a Fascist Cult as the station became more and more secluded.
Leader(s): Minister James Stark
Colony Type: Research
Special Modules: There are some large drills, along with more water purifiers on the station than most other research stations. These are due to the fact that liquid water exists beneath Io, and large scale water purification systems are needed.
Population: ~300
Military Size: No official military, though most are at least expected to fight if any conflict arises. The military is in poor condition aswell, considering that the station was built for research and not for conflict.
History: The colony was founded in 2058 under the name ERO-01. It was the first station of its kind on the moon despite its possibility for extraterrestrial life. There were originally 230 scientists and civilians sent to the station in the hopes that they could find enough resources to sustain a regular colony. Of those 230, James Stark and Marissa Stahl were the two leading scientists.

Everything went well at first. Liquid water was found two miles under the planet's surface in 2060, allowing for the station to remain independent, for the most part. But then... silence. All signals from Earth had ceased completely by 2063, leaving the station in the dark. The only outside connections they had were with any other Jupiter stations or the Martion colonies, but that was only if Europa was in a certain position. But even then, all contact was lost with those stations by 2068. ERO-01 was now completely alone, outside of the several hundred humans inside. At this point, they began to broadcast an emergency signal to any and all colonies that remained.

Hello? This is Europa Research Outpost Code Name BMJ-01. If anyone is listening, please contact the station. Hello? This is Europa Research Outpost Code Name...

For 11 years that has been broadcasted, and no one has responded. This left the station alone, with most thinking that the ERO was the last hope for humanity. In 2063, after contact with Earth had ceased, the station voted to create a nation: The Republic of Europa. This nation would, in theory, would be a democracy. They elected James Stark to be the Minister of Europa. Over the years, as isolation set in, Stark began to go crazy. He began to believe that the Republic was not only the last human state in the system, but that he is a god amongst men for ruling this nation. He is becoming increasingly paranoid, as he constantly warns the citizens of any "savage survivors" in the system that could do harm to his nation. Even though most do not believe him, most are too scared to do anything against him. (If you want an idea of what Stark is gonna be like, imagine Dr. Mann from Interstellar. He's gonna be delusional and willing to do anything to restore Pre-Collapse civilization again)
Economy: There isn't much of an economy in the Republic, since there has been no outside contact for the last two decades. The only economy that has developed is the trade between the few vendors on the station and the people. There is a currency used in the outpost, though that is rarely used in preference to the more plentiful Terran currency (The U.S Dollar)
Culture: The language in the Republic is English, as all of the researchers on the outpost are American. There are some other languages spoken by some of the scientists, but English is the official language. When it comes down to the beliefs of the society, the Europans value science and reason above all else. Religion within the outpost is practically nonexistent, though there are a handful of scientists who still believe in a deity. They are also determined to find a way to restore things to the way they used to be. Aside from that, there isn't much that the majority of the Europans care about. There are some who believe in the values that Stark has forced upon the station, but most do not.

Nation Name:Cressageland

Colony Name:Revolutionary peoples Republic of Vesta
Colony Location:Vesta

Government Type:Communist Dictatorship
Leader(s):Denis Homburg

Colony Type:Agricultural
Special Modules:Fuel Depot/rather large dock for ships, tobacco farm (Anything and everything on/in your colony that would be different from the average colony of your type)

Population:4000
Military Size:400 'security personnel' but a peoples militia exists (if only armed with farming equipment)

History: Founded by the German government as a Food supply for the other colonies, Vesta was also envisaged one day to be a major trading hub for the entire system. This changed however when the collapse began, and a group of young colonists overthrew the mercantile leadership and installed a new 'peoples republic'. Earth was too busy with its own problems to deal with the rebellion on what was seen as an inconsequential colony so nothing was done. After a while, a certain Denis Homburg appeared as a leader of the revolutionaries after his co-horts where found to be 'traitors of the people' and executed. Kelly now rules with an iron fist as he tries to industrialize his world/(Going back to your colony's founding.)
Economy:Communist focused, with rationing of most goods. Its hard but no-one starves. Some labour provided by 'volunteers' in the fields makes it easier. Some attempts to industrialize have failed due to lack of trade.(How is your colony's commerce managed?)
Culture:Through a careful 'drip effect' of propaganda, the people of the world believe that Earth is still strong, and still trying to retake the world. This has caused a siege mentality and therefore luxuries are limited. However people enjoy the sport 'low grav', a kind of football developed on the world, tobacco is popular as well as one of the few luxuries avaliable. And though religion is banned there is a small but notable protestant community on the colony. German is the majority language, with a few french and Russian speakers aw well(What do the people of your colony value, What language do they speak, etc.)

Nation Name:The Emerald Dragon

Colony Name: Hephaestus' - ORANGE

Colony Location: Mars - Syrtis Major

Government Type: Direct Democracy

Leader(s): President Abraham Markus

Colony Type: Population

Special Modules: A virtual training facility (Allows complicated training, but takes up much less space than an actual training ground. People inside here often train against enhanced programmes that are far beyond the average human's capabilities, this harsh practise allows highly skilled professionals to be trained)

Several large collective farms - based on Kibbutz and often use recyclable energy and resources.

Sachiel's Hospital - Named after the infamous Angel of the Neon Genesis Evangelion Series, the hospital specialises in citizens with bone or degenerative conditions using a mix of modern technology, proven tricks and education.

Population: 4,000

Military Size: 150 - make up the 'Lions of Hephaestus organisation

History:

Economy: The economy is based mostly on commerce, such as the trading of agricultural goods from those outside the communities for something needed like bricks or clay. The currency is known as the 'Anvil Dollar' mainly because that is one of the most important parts of the storu of Hephaestus in Greek Mythology. The citizenry often export excess crops to other areas of the planet in return for goods like electronics and explosive.

Culture: Primarily Jewish Hebrew speakers, the majority are Ashkenazi.

Nation Name: Fralinia

Colony Name: Aarvin Tech Off-World Mineral Extraction Base: Io (colloquially called Hephaestus Base or Hephaestus)
Colony Location: ~50 miles south of Io's north pole.

Government Type: Corporatocracy (ruled by the remnants of Aarvin Tech)
Leader(s): Lukas Haarvod

Colony Type: Production
Special Modules: Field generator (creates a local magnetic "bubble" to shield the colony from Jupiter's magnetosphere), refrigeration facility ( keeps the colony's interior reasonably cool (~95 degrees) and generates the frozen liquids necessary to keep the mining vessels operational.)

Population: 750
Military Size: 30 company mercenaries, 1 lightly armed surface rover used for security purposes

History: Early in the exploration of Space, a need was realized for heavy metals and compounds that are simply not found on Earth or the Moon. Unless a source was found, the complex electronics and mechanics that kept the Space Age humming away would grind to a halt. The upstart company Aarvin Tech, funded by the remnants of the European Union, was granted a lucrative contract to extract these compounds from the surface of Io, where heavy volcanism and tidal heating ensured a ready supply of the right there on the surface. On January 2nd, 2052, the first robotic colony modules landed, followed by the first settlers in 2054. They were greeted by a harsh and world- little atmosphere except for volcanic gases, ground temperatures exceeding several thousand degrees, heavy radiation, seismic activity, and the ever-present sulfur frost that quickly coats every surface. However, with the corporations desperate to make a profit and Earth desperate for materials, the Io colony was provided with everything it needed to scratch a living off of the surface. The 764 settlers of today scrape the rocks off the surface and smelt iron, sulfur, sodium, and the every lucrative heavy elements such as terbium, cerium, scandium, and the like. Nearly anything that can be melted out of the rock is profitable to ship off and sell, in exchange for water and food from the various Martian suppliers.
Economy:The economy is completely controlled by Aarvin Tech, which rations out supplies to the colonists and sells what they produce offworld. Imports consist almost wholly of water and food. The colony also has a few factories that create machinery and electronics to replace what breaks elsewhere.
Culture: The colonists speak a mixture of half English, half a mixture of many other languages, mostly from what used to be Asia, that became prevalent in Europe in the 2030s and 40s. They strongly value hard work, but are mostly very open and allowing socially, with few restrictions on what one can do as long as no one gets hurt and the work gets done.

We could work together and perhaps form the Commonwealth of the Outer Colonies to fight against the other colonies. While that's a long way down the line, if your guys stumble upon the Republic, there's gonna be a 75% chance that you're gonna be accepted by Stark (Though that'll come after some negotiating)

Never play a direct democracy. Fat people can be KING. Moles in space are fearsome. Magical Vikings wreck shit. Spies are Difficult. Stereotypes kill Zombies. Robots hurt society. Nerds can lead super people. Anti-socialites have demons. Stuck up Snow Elves don't interact well. HRE in Space tends to get complicated. Superheroes can be very orthodox. Fanatics don't make friends... even in space.

They strongly value hard work, but are mostly very open and allowing socially, with few restrictions on what one can do as long as no one gets hurt and the work gets done.

Neo-Assyrian Empire wrote:Nation Name: Neo-Assyrian Empire

Government Type: Democracy
Leader(s): President Jerome Forros

Colony Type: Production
Special Modules: Shipyard (this allows the on-site construction and repair of spaceships such as space-planes), spaceport

Population: 2,000
Military Size: 200

History: The colony was founded in 2050 by the United States, and it was one of the first U.S. colonies ever created on Mars. Although it did have an official designation, the colony was often referred to as "Hell's Gate", named after the hellish conditions on the Martian surface. The colony was built inside the canyon walls at the bottom of the Valles Marineris, which provided it protection from the extreme radiation and a higher atmospheric pressure. A shipyard and spaceport was built to allow spaceships to be constructed and repaired on site. After contact with Earth became impossible, the colony realized it would have to make it on its own and set up a democracy where every individual citizen had a say in how the colony was governed.
Economy: There isn't much of an economy, and business is mostly conducted with other colonies on Mars and other colonies in the Solar System.
Culture: The original colonists were American, and thus, the colony has an American culture. The main language spoken is English. However, they are quite tolerant of other cultures.

Nation Name: Northwest Slobovia

Colony Name: Space Materials Systems GesmbH Eunomia Works
Colony Location: 15 Eunomia

Government Type: Corporation
Leader(s): Milan Omejec, CEO; Board of Directors

Colony Type: Production
Special Modules: "Root Cellars" (hydroponic root crops: taters mostly, but also garlic, onions, beets, carrots. Plenty of calories, no protein, little short on vitamins; intended as cost-saving measure, not self-sufficient food production.) Good entertainment facilities (gyms, holographic movie theaters, saunas, huge library of recorded entertainment and culture, some local musicians). Spacecraft include a very large, re-entry-capable freighter and the CEO's personal ship.

Population: 3000
Military Size: 100 - former company police force armed with stunners, now supplemented with improvised weapons. (Stunners are wireless tasers, using low-power lasers to ionize air to carry the shocks.)

History: Founded in 2051 as an early off-world venture to exploit a mineral deposit on Eunomia. As space opened up, Space Materials Systems repeatedly upgraded the Eunomia Works, adding refineries, flexible manufacturing facilities (whatever is the next cool technology after 3-D printing), and finally basic repair facilities for spacecraft. What was originally a simple mine became a minature industrial city, serving other Belt colonies.

As the terrestrial economy began to collapse, CEO Omejec expanded all his off-world holdings. He was motivated mostly by profit, but a little Slobovian patriotism spurred him along. Once it became clear that the Earth was doomed, he burned through billions of slobmarks trying to move as much as he could into orbital and deep-space facilities. However, it was largely for nothing: early 2070s space simply couldn't support that many people, and most of his company's colonies died out. He consolidated what he could on Eunomia, the most self-sufficient of his holdings.

Economy:(How is your colony's commerce managed?) Effectively a mixed statist-private economy: CEO Omejec controls the company's resources, but he's smart enough to realize he doesn't know everything, and has allowed smaller companies to grow on Eunomia. He also grants his managers broad freedoms to use their divisions as they see fit, so even within Space Materials Systems, there's some competition.

Culture:(What do the people of your colony value, What language do they speak, etc.) As Northwest Slobovia was famously polyglot, colonists speak one or both of Serbo-Croatian and Italian and one or more of German, English, Hungarian, Chinese, or Swahili. The colonists also have traditional Northwest Slobovian values: freedom-loving, hedonistic, technophilic, and interested in personal wealth. A significant number of them share the CEO's patriotism, and would like to spread Slobovian culture, or at least make the solar system safe for freedom and technology.

Population: 250
Military Size: 50 (Not Included in population)

History:

Established in 2049 by ESA the colony intended to be a research facility, created to study the Main Asteroid Belt. The SCC had an initial population of 30 European Scientists. A Major breakthrough was discovered in 2053 after capturing and studying asteroid A4-S32, A 16 Meter long Space rock that was a lucky find, as it had collided with virtually nothing. It also confirmed the existence of Extra-Terrestrial life on Asteroids, in water much like Earth’s. This helped confirm the ET Life theory commonly believed by scientists to be the reason for life on earth. The discovery peaked interest in the Facility, which received a grant from the ESA to expand it’s facilities to include a few more surface domes. 22 Engineers of varying degrees were sent from Germany to assist in creating a well down through the ice sheet on Ceres, accessing the water within. This prompted the arrival of French and German Biologists and cellular scientists who studied basic bacteria found in Ceres’ under surface oceans. The colony swelled to a size of about 400 at it’s peak in 2054. Then, however, small scale European conflict and breakage tore at the seams of of the colony. Many scientists felt more loyal to home than future. They mutinied and stole vital supply ships sailing back to earth.

The colony's shattered and broken. The main remainder of the colony were French and German, long time rivals, who now joined together in strife. The greenhouses were expanded and scientific progress was put on hold. This prompted a slash in funding followed by a recall of many scientists. A few listened and went home, most did not, hearing terrible tales of home. Then, in 2060 the unthinkable happened. The ESA was disbanded due to distrust and a lack of funding. The SCC was cut off from the Solar system. They sent back ships for supplies that they would buy with resources, but those disappeared. The nearest colony Vesta fell to a revolution. Bandits on the spaceplanes ruined the SCC, once even raiding the science colony for anything valuable. They found little, as the scientists had hidden what they could. The Board of Directors established a makeshift militia, who used focus Laser cutters as weapons. Used being a false word a they had never been tested. The bandits quickly disappeared, as did contact with Earth. The years passed little Ceres by, the scientists to afraid to poke their heads out from their safety blanket, but it is now time.

Alone and frightened Ceres looks to further Humanity one piece of knowledge at a time. Expeditions have been sent out to all the known colonies in desperate hope that they too have survived.

Economy:In colony the resources and basic commodities are divided up equally. The Board of Directors has a stock pile of useful goods, however, if contact is re-established with the other colonies.
Culture: An odd blend of German Science and French Culture permeates the SCC. A Broken french German language is spoken with words from both launguages mixing into one. Art is seen as a form of esxpression, and since graphite is common, drawings are the standard form, with the walls of the colony beautifully decorated. Above all Science and Humanity are valued.
