It is 2080, and Humanity is scattered across the Solar System. Huddled in the remaining colonies and military bases, these colonists are what remains of Humanity's Future. Earth is dead, destroyed by both war and the greed of Man. A few scattered survivors may remain, but they are far removed from the 9+ billion that once walked upon the Earth. She will recover from what man has done, but by that time Humanity will either have died out, or have changed so much that they wouldn't be Human any more.
It wasn't always like this. At the start of this century, Humanity's future was optimistic, Technology was progressing at a rate never before seen, and though there were problems, most people expected to have technology save them. These hopes would be dashed soon enough. During the 2020's, massive famines struck much of the globe, and many poorer nations collapsed under the strain. Some of the richest nations took this as a warning sign, and built up vast reserves of supplies, in case they were needed. A few saw the true path the Earth was taking, and funded Space colonization programs.
The first human settlers arrived on Mars in 2045. These first few settlers would soon be accompanied by more of their kind, along with miners and the militaries of some countries. This emphasis on space allowed these nations and programs to develop better and safer spacecraft. By 2060, the beginning of the Great Earth Collapse, colonies had been established in the Asteroid belt and on the four largest Moons of Jupiter. Even Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, was colonized. Technology would have pushed farther, but by now, the few nations that had Space programs had collapsed into oblivion.
The past twenty years have been hard on the colonies of Earth, many collapsed due to starvation or dehydration, but some colonies were left unscathed. The future belongs to these colonies, whose Eyes are on the stars.
- No Godmodding.
- Stay realistic!
- Have decent grammar.
- At least a decent (5-7 sentences) paragraph per post.
- Your colonies should start with a few thousand people at most.
- Food is important. As are resources. Securing a supply of both is vital to any colony.
- Space isn't weaponized yet. The space-planes that allow transit around the Solar System do not have weapons on them ... yet.
- Have fun.
Before the Great Collapse, a wide variety of colonies existed, and though many colonies have been evacuated or have collapsed, the remaining types of colonies fall into the following categories:
Population - A population colony was used by the colonizing nation to be a combination of a city and a prison, sending political prisoners off to the colony to stop rising dissent at home. These are the largest colonies, but are limited in resources and weaponry. These colonies produce enough to sustain themselves, and may have enough weapons to make a small militia, or jury-rig a few combat rovers.
Production - A production colony was used by the colonizer to extract minerals and refine them for both use on-world and off. These colonies contain the necessary resources, machines, and workers to both replace and produce new goods. Most suffer from a severe lack of food, however, and most weapons are either made of mining equipment or are inferior replicas of actual guns.
Military - A military colony is what a nation would call an outpost. It has an excess of weapons and ammunition, and have access to trained soldiers. They lack almost everything else though, with most bases simply being equipped with a water-recycler/purifier and oxygen-recycler/purifier. Food is mostly derived from rationed MREs from base stockpiles, and from occasional trading from the next type of colony.
Agriculture - An agriculture colony is a facility equipped with all the necessary equipment to grow crops. These colonies also require a local source of CO2 and of Water, both easily found in the solar system. The colonies lack much in the way of weaponry, possessing at most a small armory with a few rifles and armored spacesuits, and lack production facilities for anything besides food production.
Research - The last type of colony would be the Research colony. Essentially an off-world scientific think-tank, these colonies possess the mental talent to innovate in many fields. They are decently armed, but scientists usually aren't very good soldiers. These stations are equipped to feed the staff as well, but is completely lacking in production facilities.
