Dodekatheism/Hellenismos

Postby Middle C » Sun Dec 21, 2014 2:25 pm

For those of you who are not aware, Dodekatheism, or Hellenimos, is the faith built around worship of the Olympian gods, which I am an adherent of us. It's not to common, so I don't expect much here, but I was wondering what your opinion of it is?

I consider polytheism in general to be more reasonable than monotheism on numerous grounds, such as the problem of evil: although I consider all the gods to be beyond good and evil, some are destructive, such as Ares, and some are caregiving, such as Demeter. I also believe that the creation of the universe through chaos (not chaos in the English usage, but in the Greek) is more reasonable than most ideas of creation.

Now, there's a significant amount of confusion in regard to our myths, which some who are not in the know think we take literally. It's true we affirm the existence of the gods, but not in an anthropomorphic sense. Our myths were never considered the Word of God or whatever, and it was never considered blasphemy to doubt them, write different versions, or discard them altogether. They aren't a guide to theology anymore than Aesop's fables are a guide to zoology.

I suspect this is all down to wanting to be trendy.

My opinion is that, while the legends are interesting, they ain't real. If I really wanted to worship one, I would find a perfect one. Dey ain't perfect.

Personally I would love if someone other than Vice did a credible documentary on the rising interest in the Olympians back in Greece.

Unfortunately the Parthenon is restricted from them, along with a number of other traditional sites which is a shame.

Whether or not they are perfect is open to debate. Many of us think they are, many of us think they aren't. However, the myths, once again, are just literary representations of the gods, they aren't some sort of priestly text . Just like The Divine Comedy is Christian poetry, it's not something Christians hold to be an official religious guide.

I wouldn't call it extinct per se since it has a descendant movement within Greece, and not surprisingly the US.

Alexander the Great worshiped the same gods as the Greeks did. Furthermore, the Greeks did not consider their gods peculiar to their nation. For instance, they thought the Egyptians worshiped the same gods, just with with different artistic representation.
