But not as you know it...
After acquiring the leading seat in the politburo in 1974, Grigory Romanov, aged in his early fifties, took complete control of the Soviet government by forcing Nikolai Podgorny to step down. His will was of iron, and no one dared come into his path.
It wasn't a coincidence that Brezhnev was tragically killed in a gas explosion in his home, but with no one daring to challenge Romanov, he took complete control of the Soviet Union and became the fourth Soviet Leader to be in charge of the Party and the Country - after Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev.
Meanwhile, Gerald Ford was President of the United States, unelected and inexperienced, he was faced with a dire economic situation - Oil shortages, de-industrialisation and urban decay, high unemployment, high inflation, little growth. Vietnam being a disastrous failure had dispelled the idea of American Supremacy in war, and further proved the threat of Communism when the troops finally pulled out in 1975.
The US army being too disorganised, rife with drugs and crime, and NATO slowly being driven apart from the inside.
Romanov saw the opportunity to reunite Germany - and he took it.
In December of 1975, the German Democratic Republic, supported by reinforcements from the Warsaw Pact, launched a full-scale invasion of West Germany and Berlin. NATO quickly folded, retreating it's personnel from Germany, but supporting it with munitions and weapons - the Germans took a house-by-house approach of defending their lands.
It failed, and by Christmas, the German ranks had broken up and the West German Government officially surrendered to the GDR.
The stress and failure of any American Response was the final nail in the coffin for NATO, with many members suddenly pulling out - leaving only France, Britian and the US behind.
Belgium and the Lowlands fold to their communist parties, while France declares its neutrality, Scandinavia too intimidated to act, Greece and Turkey in the middle of fighting of their own, and BAOR completely neutralised leaving West Europe entirely in the hands of Soviet mercy.
Gerald Ford realises that he had just lost the entirety of Europe, save for the UK, to the Communist Hordes, his will too weak to launch America's standing nuclear arsenal against the Soviet Union - especially considering America still had a lot to lose.
July 4th, 1976, became the Day of Liberation, and the date of the establishment of the People's Council of Europe (PCE) - the successor of both NATO and the Warsaw Pact, advocating for a reunited Europe guided by the Soviet Political Machine, was gaining members fast.
Italy and France joined the PCE in 1977, Greece joined a year later in 1978 and Turkey declared neutrality.
America, meanwhile, realising the sudden loss of it's European allies, started focusing more on it's allies in Asia, America and Africa - a sudden, extreme increase of military spending was authorised by President Reagan in 1981, and stopped all previous technology trade with the USSR with the hopes of crippling it's economic base.
He cooperated with Britain in helping enact trade sanctions against mainland Europe in the hopes of persuading them to switch sides once more -a move that was also unsuccessful.
The American Economy continued to struggle with the massive loss of European markets, who were now propped up on Soviet aid and inner regional trade.
Reagan himself, unfortunately, died in suspicious circumstances in a car crash in 1988.
Gorbachev never gained power in the Soviet Union, and the Soviet economy was also struggling to maintain stagnation and avoid serious decline.
The year is now 2005, mainland Europe is under Soviet grasp as is some of the nations in Central and East Asia, and a growing number of nations in Africa and Latin America are beginning to show signs of serious communist rebellion...
The Cold War, while not yet over, may end soon... who's colours will be dominate in the world stage?

Hey guys!
It's time for another Cold-War Alternate History RP (oh boy aren't they fun!?), and I'd like to put out a few basic rules and guidelines so we can get into the spirit of this RP, and have a good time in general:
- No Godmodding; Please, for the love of god, no godmodding.
- Your Nation's economy is struggling; everyone's is. The disturbed balance of markets, and Soviet mismanagement, has made a mostly stagnant global economy.
- Nuclear Weapons are allowed; however, be realistic about them - you're not going to use them in conventional warfare, they are a last resort. Also, if you decide to be a really poor African nation, you can't have them.
- No name calling.
- If you don't respond for a unreasonable length of time, you will be kicked and your claims released.
- Please suggest rules if you feel there is something missing, but most standard proper roleplay rules are here

No country is reserved. The only two countries guaranteed to exist are the Soviet Union and the United States, who are more or less the same as it's current borders (The Soviet Union's obviously being it's Pre-collapse borders).
