Wars of Man: Cold War: 1943

WW2, one of the most destructive conflicts in history. In 1939 Hitler invaded Poland beginning WW2, then France in 1940, then Russia in June 1941. Enter the British Commandos, tasked with killing Hitler. On a warm August night 20 men infiltrated Hitlers command center. 19 were killed, but one managed to make it past. He waited for Hitler to exit his building and bam, history is changed forever. In Nazi Germany, a power struggle ensues. By September, Germany is thrown into a full blown civil war. There are too many sides to count. On every front, German soldiers are surrendering or deserting. The lines crumble and both England and the Soviet Union push the Germans back to Berlin. East Germany is formed by the USSR and West Germany by Britain. Berlin is also split in half. France is thrown into a civil war between The Vichy government and the French Government. In Italy, the people rebel against Mussolini. Japan attacks America, but is quickly defeated by the Combined forces of Britain who is allied with America, and Russia, who fears Japanese Attack. Japan is split in half, one of the few nations fully under British and Russian control. America never fully enters the war, and even in 1943, the Depression continues. England and Russia enter and uneasy peace, starting the Cold War. In an effort to stabilize the economy, America sells both Alaska and Hawaii. Part of Alaska is sold to Canada and part to the USSR. Hawaii is sold to Britain. After these sales, the economy stabilizes some.

London
Winston Churchill sat behind his desk, reviewing spy reports from the USSR. Nothing new, just some troop movements and a few arrests. Next he looked at the reports of Project Sun, the project for creating a new weapon: The Atomic Bomb. The lead scientist who had been hired from the US, a man named J. Robert Oppenheimer, had made another breakthrough. Now they had bumped the finish date to Early to Mid 1944. The soviets were still behind thankfully. Spies also reported some more troop movements in Vichy France, a little unusual, but not major. His men in Taiwan reported some Soviet naval exercises. Again nothing major. Then he came across a message:
To: Churchill
From: Charles Jason, SAS
Encryption: High
I have witnessed a Soviet patrol enter our land in Northern China. They appeared mostly harmless, but this could lead to trouble. Advise you move 2,000 men and 50 Sherman tanks to deal with this threat.

Charles was Winston's best man, and his main military adviser. He immediately gave the order for the men and tanks to be transported from the bases in Japan and India. It would take 2 weeks to move the troops. He also ordered security to increase along the German borders.

Republic of France
President De Gaulle's Office
De Gaulle read his reports, frustrated. France's birthrate was still amongst the lowest in Europe, leading to other nations taking the reign as military power of Europe. The economy was far from best, and was recovering from the war. The colonies were asking for independence. Again. And the Vichy French continued to occupy and oppress half of the nation.
Gaulle sighed, thinking back to better days when France was the most powerful nation in Europe. Oh, then the world had trembled at the might of the French army. Now, they scoffed at it. And now France must rebuild to its former glory. Of course, they could never do that without their southern half back. After all, population was where they were lacking most. But until then, they could build up the north, in economy, in numbers, in military might. One problem at a time.

First, Gaulle quickly agreed to sending another 40,00 soldiers to Indochina, and gave orders to Algeria to squash any rebellion with mass killing if nessassary. The colonies would do findings to determine which colonies wanted independence most, which would kill the mot to get it, and which could be pleased with non-essential things. De Gaulle would accept easing taxes and giving rights in exchange for continued rule under the French Empire, if that's what it took.
Next, Gaulle looked into the economy. Realizing that reconstruction would help greatly, he sent a bill to congress asking for 10% of the budget to be devoted to recovering from the war. He sent orders to Bordeaux to increase the port size, build 10 new storage buildings, and to try to increase industry and fishing. He also sent for railroads to be upgraded, and contacted Belguim asking to build a railroad system connecting Paris, Brussels, and Ghent.
To: Belguim
From: President De Gaulle of France
Our nations have long been allies, and I wish to improve both out economies, and our people's ability to travel between our great lands. Therefore I am asking that you agree to building a railroad system connecting Paris, Brussels, and Ghent. The railroad is to have 5 tracks. 2 will be for civilian purposes, 3 for supplies. We hope to improve both our great nations.

Next, the population. Once the most populous nation in Europe, now at least 4 European nations outnumbered them. This could not continue. In order to increase the population, De Gaulle sent a bill to Congress that called for giving money and funds to anyone who had child and families. He also called for an improvement of the Education system, and increased taxing on anyone without children or a spouse.
Now, the military. De Gaulle ordered for new equipment factories to be made, major updates in tactics to include this so called "Blitzkrieg", and an increase in the military budget to 8%. But France also needed allies, and help. So De Gaulle, after approval from Congress, contacted on of the most powerful nations on Earth, an undisputed great power: Great Briain.
To: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
From: President De Gaulle of France
We ask for military help. Firstly, we would like to buy no less than 50 of your top fighter planes, and 30 of your best bombers. We also would like 40 of your best tanks, 100 brand new machine guns, and 4 of your freighters. We will pay full price for all, and negotiating is acceptable.
Secondly, and even more importantly, we offer a military alliance between our nations. We have the same friends: America, the Low Countries. We have the same enemies: The communists. We have the same goal: reinstatement of democracy and capitalism across Europe. While we have other goals (for example, we doubt you wish for us to reconsider Vichy France) we can ally for the greater good, and so I ask for a military alliance. If one of our nations is attacked, and said nation calls for help, then the other is obligated to help them.
Negotiating is acceptable.

Finally, Vichy France. Aside from war, there wasn't much France could do. So, knowing full well they would decline, De Gaulle sent only a simple message offering reunification. He knew they wouldn't accept, but it was worth a try. For now, France could only build. In the future though....in the future, France would annihilate them.

DRF Complex
Somewhere in a forest

The DRF High Command was planning an organized attack in most regions of the former Rhine Province. The biggest attack to be carried out was the assault on Cologne. With this campaign the DRF hoped to force the West Germans into a peace and take their independence by force. Well-equipped, with the DRF rebel forces having mostly surplus German Army equipment at this point and also with former military troops in their ranks, it was widely believed that they would take the province with ease.

The attack would be carried out a day after the final preparations since the beginning of planning a month earlier.

Moscow

Leon Trotsky looked over the many letters over his desk. The USSR was the largest, richest, mightiest country on the planet (in many people's opinions) but the British Empire still stood in the way of total workers liberation. The imperialist British were the archetypal western, bourgeoisie class enemy. From China, to Ireland to Japan, they ruled with an iron fist. Oppressing the indigenous people and workers alike. Trotsky, the leader of the revolution and front man of global communism could not and would not stand for this. He sent a letter to the KGB, the intelligence service of the USSR.

TOP SECRET
To Comrade Ivan Serov

The imperialist, capitalist British Empire oppress the workers across the globe. This must stop and I ordered you to do everything possible to end British influence in Asia, Africa and Europe. Of particular interest to the Politburo are:

Grade 1:
Greece: Provisional Democratic Government are our Marxist comrades and it is our duty as Marxists to make sure they win there civil war. The Hellenic Army have been receiving funding from Britain, it is of top priority the PDG receives the equivalent, if not stronger support from us. Greece is the cradle of civilization. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST THE CAPITALISTS WIN THERE.

Grade 2:
Italy: Both Britain and ourselves support the republicans in Italy, it is of importance that, once the Kingdom is crushed, the communist faction of the republican side takes control of Italy
China: We believe the anger of China can easily be formed in to a workers revolt. We are already in contact with one Mao Zedong, I want the KGB to further reactions with him

Grade 3
Ireland: The people of Ireland cray out of liberation, with Soviet backing they will soon get it

Leon Trotsky

Trotsky went on to read reports from his spy in Whitehall, he read the message on nuclear weapons and laughed. The British thought the USSR was far behind in the nuclear program the truth, they were only 4 months behind. The Red Army had capture a large Nazi enriched Uranium and Plutonium site in western Poland. Of cause this had not been reviled to the west. Whats more, the USSR had been working on, in top secrecy, top secret captured Nazi deigns for a new weapon that could launch payload across countries with out the need for a bomber. The designs for this weapon, called by the Nazi's the V-1 was now in the hands of the Red Air Force and they were making progress on the design, and quickly. The RAF had told Trotsky it would be ready for test flights in March, 1944.

After WW2 the USSR gained massive amounts of territory in China and Eastern Europe. Since the end of the war, these areas have been under direct rule from Moscow. However, this has caused minor patriotic discontent and has stretched Soviet resources. Now the Politburo have granted the independence of many of these provinces. The following document reached headlines in every country. All nations in the document will still maintain a Red Army garrisons and their respective armies will be advised by Soviet Generals.

Image

Document 43/6/I

The following nations will be independent from the rule of Moscow by 1944. All these nations will sign the Warsaw Pact, an exclusive trade and military agreement (will be published in 1 month).

Socialist Republic (SR) of China
SR Scandinavia
SR Romania
SR Bulgaria

Peoples Republic (PR) of Czechoslovak
PR Hungary
PR Mongolia
PR Japan

Bulgaria

Following the orders of Trotsky, 200 000 men have begun moving in top secrecy towards the Greek border. They are moving on different railways all with different over stories. For example, one coal train, supposedly sending Coal to Sofia is actually carrying a number of T-34/85 tanks. All this is part of Operation Plato. Plato is an operation to make sure the DAG win the Greek Civil War. The first stages of Plato is to arm the DAG with Soviet weapons, eg DP guns, DShK's and PPSH-41's. The second stage will be full blown military intervention. Once Greece has been liberated it will NOT be a de facto satellite like E. Germany is but a free communist nation.

London
Winston Churchill and Charles sat on opposite ends of one of the many tables in one of the many meeting rooms across England "Alright Charles, what should we do about the Greeks?" Charles, the SAS operative and Winston's best man, thought for a moment "Send me and my 4 man team to train and arm the Hellenic Army, something tells me the soviets may do something big, but I could be wrong" Churchill pulled out a pen and paper and wrote the orders "Jeez, you just got back and now you are going to Greece" he said "Yeah, fun huh?" and with that Charles left to assemble his team, they would leave in two days.

DRF Complex

The final preparations for the offensive were complete. 670,000 soldiers and revolutionaries across the Rhineland would rise up and attack important cities and military installations. The High Command were making sure every rebel was in their place. "13th Division, are you at your place in Cologne?" "Yes, sir, we are." "26th Division, are you in position at Mainz?" "Yes, we are." "3rd Division, are you at Wilhelmshaven and Kiel in order to secure naval ships for us?" "Indeed we are."

"Good. Now we can start this attack. All divisions, assault your designated targets!" Across the Rhineland, rebels were coming out of hiding and openly attacking German soldiers. All of them hoped they'd win.

TOP SECRET
To Comrade Leon Trotsky
From: Nikos Zachariadis, General Secretary, DSE (DAG)

Comrade, the DSE liberated Greece from Nazi rule, the people support the DSE. However the capitalist Hellenic Army have revolted and have control of Athens and the Peloponnese. The HA have foreign support. I ask that our comrades in the USSR extend the same support.

Workers of the world UNITE

Today, Trotsky granted Nikos’s request. With the permission of the DSE, 200,000 Red Army troops began moving in to DSE held Northern Greece. These troops supported by 3,000 T-34/85 tanks and 1,500 aircraft. The Black Sea Fleet has also docked in the DSE’s capital at Thessaloniki. This force will attempt to readdress the balance of power in Greece. The DSE has popular support but the HA are, as the name suggests, the Army of Greece and have better equipment. This led the DSE losing Athens and thus Soviet intervention.

The Red Army, commanded by Marshal Chuikov will work in tandem with the DSE to regain control of Greece. The Red Army intervention will not only help the DSE militarily, the people will also flock to their banner now. The DSE has enjoyed popular support since the revolution but the apparent superiority of the HA lead many to stay at home. Now, with Red Army support, the DSE will push forward and the people will flock to join the DSE and liberate Greece.

To All countries

Greece is under USSR protection. If we discover any foreign troops in Greece, it will be treated as a direct act of war. You have been warned

Leon Trotsky

Japan
The first phase of liberation of their country was to soon come into play. The Japanese army in Soviet-Occupied in Japan would try to strike swiftly with what forces they had in the region. The same goes for the Japanese army in English-Occupied Japan. Both attacks were to carry out simultaneously. 20,000 soldiers were to take the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu in the South and 30,000 were to take the island of Hokkaido in the North. The soldiers were in position, waiting for the order to strike the occupation armies in the major cities. In Hokkaido, it was Sapporo, Hakodate, and Asahikawa. In Kyushu, it was the cites of Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Sasebo, and Nagasaki. In Shikoku, it was the cities of Matsuyama, Takamatsu, and Tokushima.

"For the liberation of our glorious nation! Attack the enemy with full strength! Dai-Nippon Banzai!" The Japanese forces attacked the occupation forces all over Shikoku, Kyushu, and Hokkaido. Attacking with all their might, hoping to at the least to push out the occupation forces from major cities.

Japan

the 30,000 strong Soviet-Chinese garrison in Northern Japan was taken off guard in Japan. Seeing as the Politburo had just granted Japan freedom as PR Japan, they expected resistance to be low. However it appeared a small group of radicals seemed determined to fight on. The rebel groups took control of the small and medium sized towns quickly but in the larger towns and cities they were net with fierce resistance by Soviet-Chinese troops. The garrison was made up of 20,000 Chinese and Koreans for a reason. In ww2 the Japanese had treated the Chinese and Korean's horribly and they wanted revenge.

Despite the fact the rebels took the towns easily, it quickly got harder. As soon as the first attacks were made, the garrison was put on alert and tanks rolled in to the streets of large towns and cities. The local Communist Party member (around 5,000) were given rifles and patrolled the streets. The RAF was put on red alert and began flying patrols in the air, with orders to shoot any military vehicle not carrying the flag of PR Japan, SR China or the USSR.

A Deo rex, a rege lex!

King Emanuel and fifty of his most loyal advisers and military leaders meet to discuss the fall of Mussolini.

Emanuel- "Good, we are all here. A deo rex, a rege lex!"

The crowd- "A deo rex, a rege lex!"

Emanuel- "Now, onto business. Mussolini must die. Aye?"

Crowd- "Aye!"

Giovanni Messe, military leader, steps forward -"We must have just cause. We must have a casus belli to our claims. Let us soil his name as we free our nation."

The Crowds- "Aye!"

Emanuel- "Let us begin the operations. Forge documents of betrayal and corruption. Let us show the people the intrigue that Mussolini has taken upon himself. Alea iacta est!"

The crowds- "Res ad Triarios venit! Salve Caesar, murituri te saluten!!"

The meeting ended as quickly as it began.
A Deo rex, a rege lex! = From god to king, from King to law. (Absolute monarchy motto)

Casus belli= cause for war

Alea iacta est! = the die has been cast

Res ad Triarios venit = The thing has come to the Triarii(It's come to the last lines(of defense or attack))

Salve Caesar, murituri te saluten = Hail Caesar, those about to die salute you!

Palermo

Mussolini's orders went through. 45,000 men were to deploy to Palermo to besiege the city. The force were to rally in Rome before they marched. They were to have five hundred tanks, one thousand IFV's, fifteen ships, and half of the air force at their disposal. It was to take around a month to rally, then another to deploy.

The forces stationed were on anti-partisan duty. They've been hunting down rebels and traitors. So far the largest battle ended with over ten thousand dead and the destruction of four villages. Warnings were sent out to every tribe under the Italian yoke; "Resistance is futile."

Albania

With the USSR's advances into Greece the three hundred thousand man garrison redeployed their troops to the borders and have begun taking in refugees. Trains of supplies have been sent to both Albania and Greece to keep up with demand.

The Italian government announces that they will remain neutral, but will protect the Greek people who wish to flee Russo aggression.

Northern Greece

As Soviet/DSE troops march through communist northern Greece. Greek civilians line the road and cheer, waving the DSE and Soviet flags. Seeing the military might of the USSR by their side, many who were scared to fight joined the DSE as they marched passed. In Thessaloniki, the capital of DSE held Greece, a military parade was held by the Marines who docked in the city. As they marched, young women from the crowd jumped out and kissed the Soviet Marines. Many started whirlwind romances which ended in engagement and weddings. Some children tried to join up but where turned away. At one point, when a Soviet/DSE rifle unit was going past, an 8 year old with a large stick tried to join the men. The Soveit commander laughed and showed him his guns and uniform, then sent him home.

INLF Headquarters
Palermo, Sicily

"Mussolini is growing more unpopular than ever. Desertion rates are skyrocketing, and the INLF is quickly gaining men. The Italian Republic, a democracy ruled by the people, is soon becoming a reality, men." Messi announced. Nearly a thousand men, all in dark crimson uniforms, cheered. All of them raised their weapons towards the sky. Draped over the balcony of the headquarters were two flags - Italy's and Britain's. It symbolized the relations between the INLF and Britain, who was their main supplier of rifles. Near the back of the huge crowd were several captured army tanks.

Messi retreated back into the usually quiet room of his headquarters. Several men in uniforms greeted him and congratulated him on his speech. "Thank you" Messi found himself saying over and over again. He went down several hallways, before finally finding his work room. He entered, and sat down.

The days of Mussolini are numbered. We are preparing for a massive offensive to cut through Naples and eventually into Rome, which will become the capital of a new Republic. As the great country the British Empire, one of our main suppliers of weapons and other equipment, we request that 10,000 to 20,000 British troops land in Sicily to assist us in this offensive. While we understand if you can't fulfill this request we would greatly appreciate foreign assistance in this war to bring Italy under the flag of a democracy.

To INLF

Greetings
We support you in your war against the fascist dogs, to this end we would like to send tanks (eg T-34), artillery (eg Katushas) and guns (eg PPSH-41's) to arm your men. I can also send trainers but no troops at the moment.

I hope we can be friends

Germany

Across the Rhineland, DRF rebels were seizing control of towns, small cities, villages, and rural areas, but the real challenge was taking control of the large metropolitan centers. Fierce battles were being fought over Mainz, Cologne, and Hanover. The rebels and German border guard forces seemed to be at a stalemate and neither side looked like it would be winning. Civilian deaths were large due to continued bombing of West German controlled areas. But overall, things were looking up for the DRF.

Hokkaido, Japan
Japanese forces of 30,000 in Hokkaido were determined to keep fighting and pushing the occupation out of their country. The fight for Hokkaido was going to be a bloody one, but the Japanese resistance will not go down easily. The Japanese forces were not going to accept surrender and will fight to the death for their country. If they could not take Hokkaido, they would be sure to place a severe blow on the the forces occupying it.

Messi sighed, and sent another message back to the Brits and the Soviets; while he didn't particularly like communism, he knew they would need all the help they could get:
To: Great Britain
From: INLF

We fully understand that you cannot send any troops to Sicily, but if you could we would like 50 Crusader tanks; they may prove very useful in the offensive we are planning. While I apologize for making so many requests, the INLF is also in dire need of aircraft - we will need 50 Hurricanes and 50 Spitfires. I also completely understand if you are unable to meet my requests. Thank you for your time.

To: USSR
From: INLF

We thank you for your sympathizing with your cause, and of course, we will accept any help that comes for your way. This deed will not be forgotten, for your fellow communist brothers now serving in the ranks of the INLF will be treated well and be able to enter positions of power in the new democratic government I envision will give freedom and liberty to all of its people. Thank you for your message, and your offer of aid and assistance to the rebels who are fighting against a ruthless dictator who will stop at no costs to crush us, along with many other innocent people.

Cosenza

Nearly 2,000 INLF soldiers marched through; despite having deserted the Italian army, they still kept their organization, structure, uniforms, and weapons the same. The townspeople watched eagerly at the INLF force, who promised freedom and liberty for all Italian people. Everywhere INLF officers traveled to towns and cities, hoping to bring in people for their cause. They claimed that Mussolini was the cause of all the suffering of the Italians; despite their talkings of justice and liberty, many suspected fascists were attacked ruthlessly, and often lynched by mobs or killed by INLF soldiers themselves. "All the fascists are sympathizers of the dictator Mussolini" they claimed.

The INLF force were only marching through the small city of Cosenza to prepare for the massive offensive that would be the final blow to Mussolini's forces. In front of the marching soldiers were several officers on horseback. They surveyed the crowd who had come to watch them. Children would try to reach and touch the soldiers shiny boots, only to be held back by their parents. The troops continued to march, until they were out of the city.

The Ultimatum

Mussolini sends an ultimatum to the INLF.

"We've news of your little attacks and the people you've murdered. I hereby give you one chance to live. Withdrawal to your Palermo or see the full wrath of the army fall upon you."

Fifteen thousand soldiers were deployed to engage the rebels in Cosenza. The forces to be prepared in Rome were ordered to deploy to Sicily rapidly, by forced march if necessary.

The navy redeployed the 132nd Armoured Division Ariete. They will arrive in Syracuse with two hundred and thirty tanks, accompanied by five hundred IFV's. Thirty of the tanks are the new P 40 medium tank. Three thousand Bersaglieri were also deployed with motorcycles.

Wilhelm Pieck sat in his office, anxiously awaiting the news of the strike within Stuttgart. German workers had risen up within the city as a form of protest against the Occupation. For six months, the DSV had successfully supported the cause of Socialism in Bavaria, despite the existence of Soviet and British occupiers, and now, the DSV had the power to fight outside of Bavaria. Unlike the Socialism of the USSR and her client states, the DSV operated on the popular support of its citizens, rather than fear and oppression. However, the popular support of the people did not mean that the DSV could fight effectively against the British or Soviet occupiers. Frowning with regret, Pieck began to draft a telegram to the British occupation forces.

Dear Honorable Prime Minister Churchill
For the past six months, our two nations have fought each other, resulting in countless needless deaths. Despite our nation being located within the territory assigned to your nation for occupation, we would like to request a cease-fire between our two nations, so that our two nations may negotiate a long-term peace.
Sincerely,
Wilhel Pieck

You will get your Tanks and Planes. With 10,000 British Infantry to boot. This endeavor will be costly to us, and will probably cause me to lose support from the people.

Churchill had had a change of heart. He knew that if the INLF fell, then Vichy France would have another ally. Winston filled out the orders for 10,000 men and 1,000 Tanks to be sent. It would take 2 weeks to arrive, hopefully his Italian allies to hold out for that long...

Quebec, Republic of Canadia
Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King sat in his office. Sweat poured down his face. Outside, rain landed on his window. He was worried, thinking about the recent purchase of Alaska. Ethnical Columbians and newly arriving Francophone Canadians might not get along. He decided that he would send 700 troops to the Alaskan region to try to keep peace between the two ethnical groups, and hopefully not tick off the Soviets. The different counties would be divided into military districts, three to a district, and since Canadia had twelve of the Alaskan counties, four districts. These districts would remain until Alaska had enough people to become a province.
The Prime Minister also wrote a letter to the United States of Columbia.

We are weary of the Soviets who border us to the East, and have been shown in our country that the ethnical Columbians in Alaska are quite stubborn, so I have come up with a plan to arm Columbians in Soviet Alaska to try to overthrow the Soviets in Alaska and send them back to the motherland. We simply need some compact weapons such as M1 Carbines and M3 Grease guns.
