North Korea calls on UN to investigate CIA ‘brutal torture'

Postby Socialist Tera » Tue Dec 16, 2014 8:25 am

North Korea calls on UN to investigate CIA ‘brutal medieval’ torture
Pyongyang claims the human rights issues long associated with the communist-ruled recluse state are politically motivated, while the real issue confronting the world body should be the CIA’s harsh treatment of terror suspects.

North Korea issued a plea to the UN Security Council to consider the issue of torture used by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as opposed to its own human rights violations at home.
“The so-called ‘human rights issue’ in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is politically fabricated and, therefore, it is not at all relevant to the regional or international peace and security,” North Korea’s UN ambassador, Ja Song-nam, wrote in a letter to the UN council president.

The North Korean ambassador argued that crimes committed by the CIA and US military forces at “black sites” around the world represent the “most brutal medieval forms” of torture, and the “gravest human rights violations in the world.”

Pyongyang may want to push for eventually having the United States face criminal proceedings in the International Criminal Court (ICC), but such an objective would face certain defeat given that the US has veto power in the Council.
The request follows the release of a 528-page Senate Intelligence Committee report that detailed the “enhanced interrogation” methods in the Bush administration’s ‘war on terror.’ Those methods included waterboarding, which simulates drowning, to being kept in coffin-sized containment boxes for many hours at a time.

Pyongyang has expressed irritation after a US-endorsed move to consider North Korea’s human rights record made it on the agenda of the UN. The United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was set up in March to investigate “systematic, widespread and grave violations of human rights” in the country.

Discussions on the issue are scheduled for December 22 or 23, UN council president Mahamat Zene Cherif said Monday.

What do you think of this? While I do not support North Korea, I agree that the US should be put on trial for human rights offenses dating back to the Vietnam war and during the cold war. It is time the US answers for all the justice it has done in this world and it's imperialist goal.

You could have just posted this in the existing thread about the Senate report into CIA torture. But yeah, this is pretty funny and in accordance with the prophecies of many an amateur political commentator.

Ironically what North Korea says is true. Torture is torture and thus must be dealt with appropriately

They're not wrong but they can't pretend they have the moral high ground here.

I think being criticised by North Korea for your human rights abuses is a lot funnier.

That's not far off what North Korea is saying.

Its a bad time when North Korea has the moral high ground. Maybe when the UN investigates the CIA, they should investigate North Korea too

It's North Korea. Of course they were going to do it. The Soviets did the same thing during the Cold War.

As an American, I can say that both sides deserve some heat. But, let's be honest, North Korea doesn't exactly have the moral high ground here...

They don't really have the moral high ground, they just happen to be wearing their big boy boots this time around to make themselves seem a littler bit taller.

You've got to love North Korea though; self-proclaimed victims of a Western conspiracy til' the very end.

This.

I for one support both North Korea and America's demands that they each be investigated for human rights abuses.

What that guy said about the civil problems in DPRK is wrong. What he said about the CIA's torture methods is right.
Can't they deal with both at the same time?

Whoever the CIA tortures, they deserve it. The CIA are there to aid us in time of need, at the right place and at the right time...
You may call me heartless, but to me it's logical. North Korea are terrorists and deserve everything that can be thrown at them. They are evil. :)

I mean, sure North Korea are bad, but:
1. They aren't terrorists, they're a country.
2. That's what the CIA wants you to think.

The embargo on Cuba is unfair and hypocritical.

That on North Korea is deserved and don't you dare try to defend them as a valid socialist experience. *glares*

I dunno torture is a pretty evil act. The CIA is lawful evil or neutral evil by Dungeons and Dragons standards. :P The definition of terrorism is: the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. Does that mean the CIA are terrorists as well?
