What's your favorite national dish?

Postby Canaore » Fri Dec 12, 2014 1:04 pm

National dishes are part of a nation's identity and self-image; there's always that particular dish you'll associate with a particular country, region or people. So what's your favorite national dish, NSG? I'm talking about national dishes that are associated with your country. It might be cliche, but as an American, I can say I love apple pie.

Because then I'm going with beer. Yes, it counts. It's liquid bread, deal with it.

Maple Syrup and Pancakes with a few wild blueberries here and there. That's very Canadian mind you. As for my favorite Malasyian dish? Torn between laksa and nasi lemak. Both are delicious and national dishes of Malaysia~

I can only see this thread going down one way.

I'm not sure if I like Japanese or Brazilian yakisoba/yakibifum better. The Japanese one has more vegetables and is more umami. while the Brazilian has a better bite.

Scrapple with maple syrup.

Not "flavored"; real maple, with a bite.

Everybody talks about maple syrup, but I honestly doubt how non-savory food can be so good.

My favorite sweet food is flan, and Brazilianized Japanese/Chinese food is still by far superior to it.

Right. It is not bland, like flavored corn syrup. It has character; it makes you want to stand up and salute the Maple Leaf.

If you are ever between Ottawa and Bancroft, stop here.

They use their own syrup, and all the wood interior (2 stories) is lovely maple!

I've some relatives in Quebec that own a maple orchard (or whatever the hell you call a "maple farm"), and they sent us some one time.

Sweet Jesus, it was liquid gold.
