Describe AND Discuss your Nation's Military Field Rations

Postby Radicchio » Tue Dec 02, 2014 9:53 pm

This is something that I feel gets overlooked a LOT in our endless tweaking of guns, tanks and missiles.
An Army marches on it's stomach (the old saying goes.) So please, take a moment to describe in detail your Nation's Military Field Rations.

Keep the 1 liners to a minimum Please.
Even if you just use MREs, try to think of where you get them, if you developed them yourself and what some of the more popular items are.

EDIT: Feel free to talk about your rations and the rations of others.

(This is a PT nation set in about 800 B.C., so pardon the very archaic sounding things).

A soldier is responsible for his own nourishment and upkeep while he is serving his term; this entails the procurement of his own food, drink, and means to prepare them. A soldier is by definition a charioteer in this era, so he would have transport for all these items covered.

Primary staple -- a type of cereal, usually barley or wheat, or rice if the soldier comes from a very wealthy family, cooked into porridge
Secondary staple -- another type of grain to supplement and liven the primary staple, usually a type of beans or another type of cereal, cooked into porridge
Spices -- self-explanatory, cooked into the cereals
    Honey -- self-explanatory
    Salt -- self-explanatory

The following items are considered occasional treats:
Vegetables -- harvested from the wild
Pickled vegetables -- carried in jars and replenished whenever possible
Fruits -- picked in the wild
Dried fruits -- carried in pouches, usually of peaches or apricots. Dried pears are absolutely decadent products.
Dried meats -- very saline and must be cooked in water to remove part of the salt used to preserve it; after boiling, it is sliced and fried in a pan and served with some sort of sauce. Most soldiers don't like this item because it tastes really bad, but rather consume it on certain days on which it is mandatory to have meat, namely feast-days of their ancestors. Consumption of meat is associated with participation in religious ceremonies, and while those ceremonies couldn't be conducted while in service, consuming meats on those occasions at least grant the eater some sense of participation therein.

The following items are prohibited:
Fresh meat -- they rot and thus are unsafe for consumption
Fish -- the don't rot as quickly but they can carry pathogens

The MREs used by the Imperial Army are infamous for their poor taste, being the butt of many jokes in the Sidh military sub-culture.

The main component of Army MRE is a 200-gram tube of nutrient paste, consisting of concentrated proteins, amino-acids and carbohydrates, best described as thick goo somewhat akin to toothpaste in appearance. While largely tasteless in itself, the synthetic flavouring and gooey consistency makes it rather unpleasant to the palate. Being unpleasant to eat in itself, it comes with a package of 8 crackers, also made of concentrated nutrients. While certainly not tasty by any standards, this food contains all the necessary nutrients to keep a Sidh soldier functional throughout a tough day on the battlefield. Being enhanced with a variety of performance-increasing chemicals, these meals are jokingly reported to "grow hair on one's chest irrespective of sex".

Army MREs come in 12 different flavours. A bar of synthetic chocolate or a package of nuts and dried fruits is included for dessert.

Navy rations are considerably better, given how ship crews have consistent access to the mess hall and food synthesizers aboard their ships.

According to both Army and Navy regulations, the troops must be provided a warm meal of proper food at least once every 72 hours, meaning field kitchens and mess halls haven't become obsolete. Realizing the importance of feeding their soldiers properly, Sidh commanders make the best effort to provide the troops with proper meals whenever possible, reserving MREs for battlefield conditions when such luxuries are unavailable or impractical. Typically, the standard ration includes a soup, the main course which must necessarily have meat in it, and a dessert. When possible, meals are served 3 times a day. Fresh vegetables and fruit are served when possible, meaning the composition of rations can vary greatly between different worlds, local produce being used to make them.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

Xylitol chewing gum
Water-resistant matchbook
Napkin / toilet paper
Moist towelette
Seasonings, including salt, pepper, sugar, non dairy creamer or UHT milk, and red pepper sauce

3 x Survival biscuits (fortified with essential vitamins and minerals)
1 x 100gram fortified military chocolate bar
1 x Powered sports drink mix (in 600ml mixing/drinking bag)

We give them nothing, and tell them to eat whatever they can find. Usually this translates to the carcasses of both the enemy and allies. If the person for whatever reason cannot eat, well ... he most likely would be missed.

Lolloh distributes rations tailored for many different species. The standard ration consists of 500g of food, and each soldier is given three rations a day to eat. The equivalent is given to other animals, according to body weight. Rations for herbivores consist of dried-out salad (to be expanded using a canteen), while those for omnivores and small carnivores include cuts of meet grown artificially inside a tank. Large animals, such as dragons, do not have field rations, but are provided food by the supply line.
If supplies cannot reach a unit, food is rationed, so that one ration can last 3 days. Each platoon is issued 1800 rations (enough for one month), and can only use them if regular food cannot be provided. Should rations run out anyways, soldiers, and in particular dragons, are allowed to forage for food, including battlefield casualties.

Field rations in the Zhouranese People's Army were introduced in early 1973 in order to standardize nutrition for soldiers in the field.

The Soldier's Pack consists of early morning tea, breakfast, mid morning tea, lunch, evening tea, and dinner, and includes a folding stove and hexamine fuel tablets. The ration weighs 880 g and provides 4,100 kcal (17,000 kJ). The Soldier's Pack comes with an insulated flameless heater activated by water. The Soldier's Simple Pack is a simplified version, weighing 400 g and providing 1,520 kcal (6,400 kJ).

The Four-Man Pack is an operational ration pack for a group of four soldiers. Designed to sustain four soldiers for 72 h in closed-in battle conditions, the Four-Man Pack is based on instant/ready to eat foods and ration/survival bars. First and second day ration packs weigh 2 kg each and provide 4,000 kcal (17,000 kJ) per soldier, while the third day ration pack weighs 1.5 kg and supplies 3,000 kcal (13,000 kJ).

Sample menu includes mutton, horse meat, rice, instant noodle, and energy bar, plus instant solid beverage, instant coffee, teabags, powdered milk, powdered orange juice, sugar, salt, pepper, hot chili sauce, a multivitamin energy tablet, tissue paper, and soap.

MREs in the Tolmakian Military Forces come in many forms. There are bricks of dehydrated food and nutrients, pastes of powder. Usually water is added, otherwise the MREs are edible just as they are. The MREs are produced by Muse Foods Inc., a company owned by Berry Farms.

MREs come with plastic utensils (although soldiers sometimes bring their own). They are usually sealed in an airtight bag. Meals include bread, biscuits, beef, rice, chicken, jams or spread, crackers, vegetables and some desserts. Dried fruit, candy, gingerbread or hardtack are also eaten.

Though MREs are carried by every soldier, they are only eaten on missions or campaigns away from base. At base, soldiers are served fresh meals or whatever healthy dishes are available.

Ruskarkand's Military doesn't really have any form of Field Ration, instead opting for the status quo of utilizing their robust digestive system. With the exception of select projectiles which are easily removable, Ruskarkand's forces (being Dragons and all) are rather adept at making sure whatever they kill is suitable for consumption but a moment later. Whether it's peeling through armor or rending flesh which doesn't look appetizing away from what does look suitable for consumption.

Raw or not, Charred or normal. It doesn't matter. It will be consumed by one individual of a horde of hundreds of thousands in order to keep the horde's energy stoked and their fires burning brightly. In addition, the mentality of outright pillaging everything in their path rings true for such measures of up-keeping an army. A horde of thousands can easily be fed by a small town or city's worth of citizens and their food. Sort of a Double Entendre, but the needs of Ruskarkand's Military can be tended to in a number of ways. Logistically supply-lining food from our territories into our incursions is risky and resource-consuming, so it's not an action we partake in. Unfortunately, a side effect of this is how very little is left of value following our expansion into newly conquered territories. An interesting point, derived from our method of up-keeping our Military.

That's largely besides the point, though. This is a system which has a myriad of calculated ups and downs - but the main question yet remains unanswered. The average 'Ration' (if you could call it that) is your bog-standard common-or-garden Human with little nutritional value in them due to their hierarchy on the natural food-chain. As a result, a number are consumed by each individual Dragon in order to stave off hunger each time such a feeling arises. Mass-wise, they're reputable for making one feel full rather easily.

Cocaine.

edit:
Jokes aside, it varies on the location, though mostly it consists of a special liquified blend of various foods, including spaghetti, meatballs, ceasar salad, roast chicken, rice, broccoli, etc. It keeps everything simple and quick while our troops are on duty. All of these drinks' contents are based on the time of its consumption, so more breakfast-y foods are in the morning, lunch-y foods to the middle of the day, and dinner-y foods towards the end of the day.

We like to claim that our Army is the best-fed in the world. Our MREs are real meals like you might order in a restaurant. You won't find many restaurants that serve them but they are available in supermarkets. Most squads pool their MREs to make concoctions such as perogie-chili lasgana.

MREs don't come with chemical heaters (our troopers claim they can taste the chemicals) or with disposable cutlery (troopers carry a fork-knife-spoon set or a spork). Most troopers carry a small hexamine stove but more often than not rations are heated over a wood fire.

Inorothian rations of the late 1870's through the early 1900's (when this nation is largely set) are divided into three categories: the Garrison Ration, the Travel Ration, and the Field Ration. Garrison Rations are to be consumed whenever a unit is expected to remain in a base or position for an extended period of time, and are shipped in bulk in large crates and barrels from supply depots further in the rear, to be supplemented with whatever is locally available when applicable. They are the freshest of the three and can be quite varied in their composition, but ideally, per person per day, should include 20 oz of meat or fish, 20 oz of flour, 5 oz potatoes, 5 oz vegetables, 4 oz cheese, 2 oz sweetener (sugar, honey, molasses, etc) or fruit, at least some coffee or alcohol or tea, salt and pepper, and a candle. Travel Rations are to be used for pre-planned movements from one secure area to another, with little danger of action or encounter with the enemy immediately expected. They are simply Garrison Rations prepared in advance, usually in the form of hard breads, smoked meats, and pre-made stews, designed to be prepared in field kitchens that could be set up and torn down quickly so as not to hamper the speedy movement of the force. Field Rations are designed to be used when a force is in close proximity to the enemy, or in any circumstance where cooking is deemed dangerous, too great an expense of time, or downright impossible, such as forced marches or when fire fuel must be conserved. Commanders are allowed considerable leeway in what can be issued, and though ideally Field Rations should consist of the same portions as the other two rations, this rarely happens. Usually there is meat and bread, but the other accouterments may or may not be included, depending on availability. Everything is packaged, in cans, tins, burlap sacks, or some other way, and each individual soldier must be able to carry their own, often two or three days-worth at a time.

We use mylar wherever possible for weight reasons (and bear in mind that for environmental reasons our troopers carry everything out of the bush that they carried in). However, there are a few specialized items that work best in cans - and the empty cans make useful cooking pots, containers, etc. The Supperware Corporation, which makes everything from civilian pineapple keepers to Army canteens and ammunition boxes, also provides a range of snap-on covers to make the tins re-useable. These days, only old-timers carry a P-38 can-opener on their ID chain but almost every squad has at least one.

Peanut butter
Dried meat (Venison or chicken)

Ive given it some thought, and had drawn this up some time ago, and yes YFAF-Field Meals are available for export.

Numerous constraints and considerations had to be addressed if an acceptable ration product was to be provided to YFAF military personnel.

Ration development constraints include nutrition, personnel acceptance, wholesomeness, producibility, cost, shelf life, self-heating capability, modularity, weight, volume, ease of sanitation, menu fatigue and performance enhancement.

Per the list of constraints under YFAF regulation 1366, Nutritional Standards for Operational Rations the following product has been submitted as the replacement to the internationally utilized MRE.

General Information:
Minimum Calories per meal:1,300(requirement:1000)
15% protein, 30% fat, and 55% carbohydrates(Falls with in regulation parameters)
The above caloric value is dispersed in each meal over:
entree and/or starch
biscuit w/cheese or peanut butter and modified fruit preserve
Snack Food
Dessert
Beverage(s)
Disposable exothermic chemical Ration Heater

Current Available Menu-the descriptions given will be in a vernacular common internationally.
**To meet the nutrient requirements all items are fortified with Spirulina bacteria food supplement. This makes the food stuff particularly nutrient dense.**

Menu1
Spiced Stew(beef) with Legumes
Sweet corn with chilis
Cheese spread
Crackers
