There are free forum softwares, see myBB and phpBB.

For those unable to afford hosting, free solutions exist, I believe TSP uses X10 hosting.

I'd much rather have Zeta that hardly ever has issues than have a privately hosted forum (like some I know on NS ) that go down every two weeks at least.

Really is just a lot of DoS.

The attacker has not yet managed to bring down more than half of the ZB servers at once; it affects us a lot because a huge number of forums made in the last 18 months for NS are w11 forums (s11), and the forum that was originally being targeted by this DoSer is also w11.

Been an Admin on ZB/IF free forums for about 8 years now, on 6 main forums with over 1,750,000 posts - a significant sample of some of the most successful offsite communities in NS history. And then there is of course the Mighty 10KI, the largest single offsite community in NS history, solidly running on freely hosted ProBoards.

In those 8 years I can count the number of times forums I've been Admin of, have had noteworthy outages, on one hand. What I can't count is the number of privately hosted forums for various NS regions that have come and gone: had arguments over ownership, issues with bearing of the costs, or folded after poor activity for a short period of time with no prospect of revival.

I wish more had signed up to the publicly hosted ones; all of the history on the private forums have been lost to the sands of time basically. Zetaboards is a much better options that the private forums which offer shoddy service regularly, weird BBcode and a solid attachment to Hobbes/Glen-Rhodes/Tech-Guru.

Also, uptime would be great if a community was willing to fork over a measly $5/mo for a Digital Ocean account. Hell, there are free hosts with 99.99% uptime. x10 just sucks, but due to the politics of moving hosts, TSP is stuck with it.

The zetaboards downtime has been getting quite ridiculous lately, but they are largely reliable in the long run. The downtime is also no real fault of zeta staff, just some malicious kid who apparently hates them. I do wish whoever is spearheading these relentless ddos attacks would go find something better to do with their time.
