You are a member of the Illuminati; the world's most famous, and at one point it's strongest secret society. But the Illuminati's era has passed; it is a dinosaur, soldiering on long past when it should've laid down and died, and letting it's successors feed off it's remains.
But it marches on anyway. It is your task to preserve this secret society against enemies both within and without; for the Illuminati's greatest weakness has always been it's internal divisions, even while other societies prepare to strike. Will you keep this aim, and preserve the society, or try and commandeer it for your own ends to rise to dominance from the shadows? Or perhaps even try and destroy it from within?
Founding
The founding of the Illuminati is somewhat mysterious; we know of a date, the 1st of May 1776, and that it was originally founded in Bavaria, but the exact details of the Illuminati's spread across the globe are lost to the mists of time due to the Illuminati's lack of a central command structure and record keepers.
That they played a role in the American Revolution is clear; at least some of the Founding Fathers are known to have been members, but which ones is a subject of much debate amongst even the Illuminati itself.
However, after the Revolutionary War, the Illuminati remained silent for a long time. They began the French Revolution, but that revolution was commandeered by the Rosicrucians for their own ends. The Rosicrucians in turn lost control of the Revolution during the rise of Napoleon, who was a Freemason, and after his defeat the Rosicrucians regained France.
The Illuminati's rise to prominence began in the 1830s, when Princess, later Queen, Victoria joined the Illuminati and founded the British Council alongside the American Council, and thus the growth of the Illuminati began. Although the American Civil War, caused by Freemasons in the South, caused a disturbance with the American Council, the situation stabilised.
The Franco-Prussian War of 1871 marked the fall of the Third French Empire and allowed the Illuminati to oust the Rosicrucians from France while over the next decade, Queen Victoria's children and grandchildren, Illuminati all, began to spread across Europe spreading the order. The Pax Illuminati had begun.
Pax Illuminati
Called by the general public the 'Pax Britannia', this period is also known as the Illuminati's 'Golden Age'; the heads of state and government of Germany, Russia, France, Austria-Hungary, the USA and UK were all Illuminati members, each with their own Councils (excluding France and Austria-Hungary, which were Chapters under the British and German Councils respectively). Other Chapters also existed, including the Serbian Chapter under the Russian Council and the Belgian Chapter under the British Council. Of the great powers, only Italy, stronghold of the Rosicrucians and the Ottoman Empire, ignored by all, remained out of Illuminati influence even if the organisation was now showing internal rifts.
The peace was not to last. The assassination of Franz Ferdinant, a leading member of the Austrian Chapter, by the Black Hand, a Serbian Chapter-backed terrorist group, broke the Pax Illuminati as the Illuminati went to war with itself, shattering the Pax Illuminati.
The Russian Civil War was caused by internal divides within the Russian Council, and would eventually lead to the new Soviet Council being formed. With the fall of Austria-Hungary, the disbanding of the German Council and Austrian Chapter and a failed attempt to break Japan from under the Protect the Emperor Society's iron grip, the Illuminati was weakened, but still far stronger than it's rivals.
World War Two was caused by the Rosicrucians, having secured power in Germany and several other European states and allied with the Protect the Emperor Society in Japan, invaded and destroyed both the French and Polish Chapters as well as several other Chapters under the British Council before invading the Soviet Council while the Protect the Emperor Society attacked the American Council.
Eventually both the Rosicrucians and Protect the Emperor Society were crushed, and the Cold War between the Soviet and American Councils began.
East vs West
After WW2, the Illuminati was reorganised into two Councils; the American Council and the Soviet Council, each with various Chapters controlling their allies. The two Councils warred for influence over the world, culminating in various conflicts resulting in a divided Korea, a Soviet Council-controlled Vietnam and a Gang of Four-controlled China friendly to the Soviet Council.
The Cold War had begun.

However, the Gang of Four and the Soviet Council suffered a split, whilst in 1963 after the Freemasons assassinated President Kennedy and the American Council was destroyed. From then on the Freemasons controlled the West, and were able to remove the Illuminati governments from their allies or control them.
However, the Illuminati struck back. The Iranian Revolution ousted the Freemason-backed Shah of Iran, and they were able to preserve their influence in India whilst the Soviet Council held strong whilst the Freemasons in the US declared their independence from the Freemasons in the 1980s, founding the splinter-society known as 'The Patriots', although it's also called the 'Zionist Occupation Government'. The Patriots merged with Majestic-12, a former ally of the Illuminati who specialised in dealing with paranormal situations, shortly after their formation.
The Illuminati finally collapsed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Rosicrucians, silent for many years, ousted the Illuminati from the USSR and her satellite states over a period of 2-3 years and were in turn ousted from most of the new states by the Freemasons.

Freemasons: The oldest enemy of the Illuminati, the Freemasons are arguably the strongest of the current societies; they control most of Europe excluding those states still within Rosicrucian Russia's influence. They also possess a number of allies within the US, notably the remains of the KKK and various militia groups, and have a large amount of influence in India and Israel. They are currently in a tenuous alliance with the Patriots against the Rosicrucians.
Rosicrucians: The Freemasons main rival, the Rosicrucians control Russia, Belarus, Central Asia and the OPEC countries, but little else. Heavily weakened since their high point in 1941-1942, they remain a capable force primarily though OPEC, but Patriot interference in the Middle East has weakened their control and forced them to utilise 'unsavoury' jihadist groups to try and weaken the Patriots.
Gang of Four: A grand alliance of triads, Communist Party factions and North Korea's Kim dynasty, the Gang of Four controls both China and North Korea and influences much of Africa, but due to the high level of government instability there they prefer to influence Africa rather than directly control it. They remain aloof from the Rosicrucian-Freemason/Patriot conflict, but could tip the balance should they join, and notably are the only major society to never have been enemies with the Illuminati.
The Patriots/Zionist Occupation Government/Majestic-12: The Patriots, as they are commonly known, control the US (and Japan through their Yakuza allies). However, despite controlling the most powerful nation on Earth, the Patriots hold on it is shaky. The Freemasons have a large amount of influence within the Republican Party, KKK, Militia Movement and Tea Party, but not enough to take control of the US, whilst the US Military-Industrial Complex retains hidden ties with the Illuminati Remnants.
Anonymous 'A': The only 'secret society' to not be properly organised or centralised, Anonymous 'A' refers to the hacker elements of the group. Including multiple subgroups, including Lizard Squad and other hackers, Anonymous 'A' mostly just wrecks general havoc across the world, organised over the website 4chan, unintentionally screwing over other societies. 4chan is also used by Anonymous 'B' to plant orders to Anonymous 'A' disguised as random ideas posted on 4chan.

Anonymous 'B': The 'head' to Anonymous 'A's body, Anonymous 'B' is a 'denial' group; their goal is simply to weaken all other societies by any means necessary. Usually this revolves around using Anonymous 'A' to influence the Internet and media, or creating/funding wars between secret societies with minimal self-involvement due to their vast lack of manpower and resources.
Cicada 3301: Very little is known of Cicada 3301; beyond their strange and elaborate recruitment method of a world-wide 'question hunt' to ensure recruits are of an extremely high standard, nothing is known.
