Following the end of the civil war during which the ruling military dictatorship was overthrown by democratic rebels with backing from foreign countries, the new regime began focusing on disarming Naureon and make the country abandon its state of a heavily militarized island which it became during the rule of the military dictatorship. The military spending decreased with the new government focusing on other areas that required financing. Naureon started the removal of its missiles and termination of nuclear weapons and WMDs that the country owned during a military rule. All this activity was the government’s effort to improve the national security of Naureon by eliminating its reputation as a potential aggressor in the Pacific and show that as a democratic state Naureon would not be focusing on improving the lives, liberties, freedoms and comfort of its people, rather that arming and militarizing itself. Nevertheless, the effect backfired as the Naureonese demilitarization of itself made the Pacifican community view the prospering country as fresh hunting grounds.
During the transitional period from dictatorship to democracy, Naureon began sensing regular violation of its territorial waters, airspace and other elements of sovereign territory. Foreign countries increased the amount of their naval and air forces in the international Pacifican waters and especially in the parts close to Naureon. Foreign warships and military aircraft were constantly spotted in the Naureonese territorial waters and violating the country’s airspace thus making the government concerned that multiple Pacifican countries with imperialistic ambitions were now eyeing Naureon as a potential land for occupation and annexation as the country was still weak after the civil war, the democratic government was still only trying to take root and the active demilitarization of the island only showed that the quality of the country’s national security was only decreasing rather than improving. Eventually, the government of Naureon attempt to fight the potential foreign aggressors through diplomacy, however, any accusations thrown towards these countries were immediately rejected or denied by their government as Naureon was constantly blamed for lacking proof that would reinforce its accusations against other Pacifican countries. Eventually, one of Naureon’s multiple international disputes lead to war with a nearby Pacifican nation – Sarunir, which was one of the countries that Naureon blamed for violating its sovereignty due to their ambitions to spread their national borders. Due to an encounter between the Naval Forces of the two countries in the Naureonese territorial waters, the governments of Naureon and Sarunir officially declared war on each other which resulted in the Sarunirian invasion of the island country. Although the government of Sarunir continued denying any ambitions to cease Naureonese territory, the goals eventually became clear as the Sarunirian military forces began occupying different parts of the island with the goal to eventually incorporate them into the national territory of Sarunir. The long war eventually lead to a cease-fire followed by an official peace agreement that ended the state of war between the two countries.
Despite one expected conflict having occurring and peacefully commenced, Naureon’s national security problems still did not end as the island continued detecting foreign military forces circling their territory. One country in particular, which was Tenebrin was viewed by the government of Naureon as one of the biggest threat, even more than Sarunir was. The Pacifican country known for its rogue reputation, Tenebrin was one the states that strictly refused to recognize the regime change in Naureon that was the result of the country’s civil war. Since the overthrow of the military dictatorship and the installation of democracy, Tenebrin increased its military presence in the international waters and airspace very close to Naureon. Although the government of Tenebrin continued voicing its position of opposing the new regime in Naureon, it was believed that it was only the country’s vocal outside position as its true ambitions were identical to multiple other Pacifican countries and that was territorial gains from weakened Naureon. Since then, the two countries continued engaging each other in an indecisive diplomatic conflict, before it grew out of proportion and transitioned into a series of military confrontations. Tenebrin continued increasing the number of its forces around Naureon which eventually began violating the island country’s maritime boundaries and trespassing into its territorial waters. Since then, the government of Naureon issued multiple warnings to the government of Tenebrin to pull its forces away from the Naureonese sovereign territory and withdraw the ones that had trespassed, however, the situation did not change. This lead to a series of occasional clashes and skirmishes between the Naval and Air Forces of Naureon and Tenebrin in the international waters and on the maritime boundaries of Naureon. The ongoing collection of indecisive military confrontations eventually lead to Tenebrin increasing the number of its military forces near Naureon even more and following this, issuing an official declaration of war against Naureon. The government of Naureon issued a counter declaration of war and since then the two countries began mobilizing military forces in those areas that served as the most common stages of armed confrontations. Naureon was attempting to keep most of its forces on the country’s land, maritime and air borders, while Tenebrin was mobilizing all around the territory of Naureon.
The two countries were ready to fight each other with full strength. It was only a matter of time until one of them would deliver the first strike.
