Ulster says no to an Irish Language Act

Postby Shard_Head » Sun Nov 23, 2014 10:10 am

Long story short, Sinn Fein want to see an Irish Language Act brought about in Northern Ireland which would put the Irish language on equal footing with English in all areas of officialdom. The DUP response to this has been childishness and tribalism.. So what do you think? Is this a costly wasteful goal or something of merit which should be pursued? How should the DUPs actions be dealt with? How big of a cunt is Gregory Campbell?

I'm inclined to say that the current status quo is acceptable for a language which is barely existent any more and thrives primarily because of its non-official rebellious status. Gregory Campbell certainly is a cunt of enormous proportions and the sanctions against his behaviour should have been significantly more than a single day off particularly as it had zero impact on him whatsoever.

Well I don't really see why its necessary to give the Irish language an equal status to English. Perhaps if a significant amount of people are in favour of it but I doubt that's the case.

In Ireland on public transport systems (Ie. Luas, Iarnrod Eireann) announcements are often in Irish before English. They must have mixed it up with the I before E except after C rule.

It would make more sense to have a Scots Language Act for Ulster.

They being who?

The status of Northern Ireland as a member of the UK does not in any way preclude the use of the Irish language.

Not really sure why the Ulster Scots would feel the need to speak Irish. If there were any language act, it would make more sense to preserve Scots.

Indeed. No-one complains when Welsh or Scots Gaelic shows up on road signs. (Well, except for that time the translator screwed up and the end result was the Welsh for "Free Erections" on a cash machine) So why should Irish be any different?

Are there people around there who only speak Irish and are therefore being excluded from civic life because things aren't published in Irish? If not, it's needlessly pissing money away, surely, and not something the state should consider funding.

I would have no problem with Irish on street signs and whatever - there are parts of Belfast where this is the case already (and I would imagine other parts of NI, I think Moyle council has some or all signs with Irish on them, at least).

What's the problem? Other than Gregory Campbell being, as you say, an utter cunt. Him and the rest of the DUP, for that matter.

I guess some people would then want Ulster Scots on signs, too, but no. Just no. It's a dialect not a language, for a start, and nobody actually gives a shit about Ulster Scots other than John Laird and the cultchies that have that show on Radio Ulster on a Wednesday evening that gets in the way when you're flicking through stations in the car. Although I suppose it's better than endless country music on Downtown. edit: or, oh god, U105.

They being the Irish Nationalists.

Most of the people from Ulster want to be in the UK so how likely is it that they will vote for putting a language which hardly anyone speaks on an equal footing with English, a much more widely spoken language? It's never going to happen

Its not really the Ulster Scots who are speaking irish though its people who usually self identify themselves as Irish. Though there are a few people who identify as British who are either speaking it or learning it, so i guess there could be a few ulster Scots who speak it as well now that i think about.

Anyway in regards to the OP, yeah that man is easily a prick, also i think as Irish grows more and has a larger speaking population it should be given a status similar to English. Hell There are plenty of places in west Belfast and other areas that already have Irish alongside English for street names and direction boards etc.

Well the usage of Irish in NI is growing by a fair bit, in fact there were even irish language centres being set up in the heart of some unionist dominated areas such as in east belfast due to the growing amount of people interested in learning it. So its not as unlikely as you think and its not just Irish nationalist who use it.

Funnily enough, I was working on an alt-history post that involves listing the ATL leaders of Ireland...

Coincidence aside, I think that if a majority of the people want it, then knock yourselves out. Otherwise, I am neutral.

An official Irish Language Act would do more to harm the language than help it unfortunately. I prefer the more natural growth it's experiencing at present. Campbell is a small minded prick and I wish him all the very worst.

It would get di**heads who don't have anything to do with the language speaking it (Like Me! JK) . The natural growth is by people who WANT to actually speak it. I don't!
