Climate Change And Crappy News

Postby The Rich Port » Thu Nov 20, 2014 9:41 am

I recently saw on TV (sources to be posted soon) of news anchors shitting all over climate change again like it's 2008 and Bush is still derping up the White House.

It really ticks me off that they're allowed to do this and/or encouraged by their network to do so.

It's so irresponsible, so pretentious and snobby of them to dismiss things they have shown they don't understand. It's the usual talk, too, talk that's been going on since the issue of climate change came up: "lel, it's super-cold, so climate change is stupid".

But what do you guys think: Do you think climate change is real? Do you think news stations are in the right for reporting the way they do? Should we as citizens do better at filtering our news, or is that the job of the network?

Denying climate change is pretty ignorant. It doesn't even make sense.

Of course climate change is real. Look at the history of the earth. Saying that things like this can't shift doesn't even make sense. I see no reason to deny what's been heavily supported by modern science.

But if climate change is real, why isn't it happening like in The Day After Tomorrow?

Shit, one of my teachers is stuck in New York because of it.

And we're not getting anything a few counties over. :(

To address the topic, perhaps laws regarding "misleading the public" should be taken into consideration.

Yeah climate change is real. As for if they have a right... I don't think so, but no one's going to stop them, no matter how many times the world trade centre spot gets flooded. it's actually kind of infuriating when it's staring them in the face and they just don't pay attention.

At the moment the best we can do, and yes I'm going to be that guy, is go to the most reliable news networks. Ratings are more or less their blood. Without viewership, they're just crappy talk shows about issues. Alternatively you could write, and protest against the network on this matter.

Climate change denying went out of fashion, like, ten years ago. And even then, it was pushing it. It's just embarrassing. Saying "well, I'm not a scientist, but I'm not sure if I agree with this..." about every single scientifically proven fact is just stupid.

Seriously, the anti-intellectualism that goes on on our crappy infotainment media gets more and more prevalent each day.

This. Although compared to some of the other beliefs that conservative America clings to, global warming denial isn't the absolute worst.

In a way, I think it is, because things like abortion law or same sex marriage can easily be protected by writing a law, whereas if we ignore climate change, it's stuck with us forever. Each year we don't reduce emissions or set targets, it just gets worse and worse. So climate change denial actually has permanent and lasting effects IMO. It's dangerous.

Yes. :p Corporations don't enforce the law. Try to influence it to their advantage, sure, but who doesn't?

But still, anybody who blindly trusts either one deserves what they're gonna get.

You do know that not all conservatives think alike, right? Or that anti-rational folks on the left aren't helping either, by for example, continuing to mindlessly oppose nuclear power despite its obvious utility at reducing global warming?

Atlanticatia wrote:In a way, I think it is, because things like abortion law or same sex marriage can easily be protected by writing a law, whereas if we ignore climate change, it's stuck with us forever.

It'll take care of itself eventually. We just may not be around to see it. :p

Even leaving aside climate change denial, it's not clear people really want to do what's necessary to stop it. This mentions that Germany's bailing on its CO2 reduction targets. (It's a blog entry, but it's properly linked to legitimate sources.)

In the US, general polls on dealing with the problem say that people are in favor, but when pollsters ask about paying for it, people are less enthusiastic. Obviously, people who don't believe the climate is changing (or that people have nothing to do with it) can't be arsed to pay for fixing it, but that's not everybody. Also obviously, the last two polls have a certain source bias to them, but nonetheless, the results appear valid for the questions asked, that is, "how much money are you willing to spend?". (I found some other polls with different results, but they're more than ten years old, so it's not clear they'd apply today, even if one were to accept their results.)
