Rosetta mission scientist Dr Matt Taylor persecuted by SJWs

Postby Vamtrl » Sat Nov 15, 2014 7:54 am

Rosetta mission scientist Dr Matt Taylor cries during apology over 'offensive' shirt
He helped mankind land on a comet, but Dr Matt Taylor may end up being remembered for his risqué sartorial judgement rather than his scientific acumen.

The space scientist broke down in tears today and apologised for wearing a gaudy shirt which featured cartoon images of women wearing bondage gear and firing guns.

During a press briefing this afternoon on the progress of the Rosetta mission, Dr Taylor, the lead scientist, appeared visibly upset and struggled to speak.

Eventually he said: “I made a big mistake and I offended many people and I am very sorry about this."

Dr Taylor received a reassuring pat on the back from Andrea Accomazzo, the Rosetta flight operations director, as he went on to describe the current state of the mission.

In recent days the heavily-tattooed London scientist had become a firm favourite with the public for his unlikely appearance and enthusiastic interviews.

But the shirt has divided opinion, with many women in the science community accusing Dr Taylor of sexism.

Astrophysicist Katie Mack said earlier this week "I don't care what scientists wear. But a shirt featuring women in lingerie isn't appropriate for a broadcast if you care about women in science"

New York blogger, James DiGioia added: “Technology advances while society remains decidedly retrograde.”

But British astronomer Nick Howes, a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society defended Dr Taylor: “Matt is a decent guy, and from time spent with him, no mysoginist.”

However the shirt quickly spawned its own hashtag on Twitter -- #shirtstorm -- as both sexes took Taylor to task.

"No no women are toooootally welcome in our community, just ask the dude in this shirt," tweeted The Atlantic tech writer Rose Eveleth.

So feminists on twitter and other social media sites were quick to pounce on Dr.Matt Taylor for wearing a shirt featuring women in skimpy clothing holding guns while giving an interview after they successfully landed the 10-year project (landing probe on a comet). A shirt which happens to be made by his wife. They claim that him wearing that shirt dissuades women from entering STEM field . Any way, they managed to harass the guy enough to make him apologize over the incident and even made him cry.

BUT that's not enough for them you see. He has to be fired now according to the new campaign against him.

There are not enough facepalms to convey how I feel about this situation. He should have never had to apologized to these professional victims.

I don't have lived experiences as a person who suffer misogyny, but seriously, I didn't see nothing overtly sexualized in his shirt.

One thing is to ask for sensibility, another one to be offended at it.

Then again, I'm far less sympathetic to the cause of dyadic cishet men claiming generalized persecution by angry annoying activists, as seems to be the case of OP.

Screw them, it's a fucking shirt it doesn't dissuade women from doing anything. I don't get why these people go out of their way to cause issues over things that don't even matter like this, it's mind boggling.

Pretty much.

He was just casual about it. In a manner that lots of people see as still representative of [cis] hetero male power, when he's currently a poster person of a new advance in technology civilization yadda yadda.

It has its sting but it's hardly unexpected. That people can be frustrated with it because of a personal understanding of what symbols represent (and yes, symbolism matters) and be condemned for it being irrational just shows that there's power politics around it.

Good. Someone that wears something inappropriate while representing a prestigious organization should apologize for it. Matter is settled.

Not directly.

Indirectly, symbolism would have, depending on the perspective of who sees it, a big man doing something great in the history of mankind where woman are a secondary figure of aesthetics and sexualization under the gaze of tru protagonists of history.

You have a male perspective. So don't be so eager to call BS and desperate attempts of gathering controversy.

Meh, stupid idea to wear that kinda of shirt on TV when you're in the public eye but massive overreaction too. Probably not particularly a misogynist, but he should've known better - The shirt is degrading to women. It's good to see he has apologised, though it's hardly a "breakdown".

The Grand Prophet wrote:The thing about it is, tons of people around the world wear that kind of thing, social media just jumps on it because he wore it on tv.

That's the exact point... It's very hard to pick up on every single man or woman who does something stupid, but it becomes an issue if someone - especially someone who's to some extent a role model - displays that on TV.

Btw, nice to see your first two posts straight on this topic immediately agreeing with the OP :/

At this rate, they'll be demanding that any statues of nude women be removed from art galleries :lol2: In all seriousness though, sometimes people really do take things too far- this man was not trying to offend or belittle anyone, and has been subject to some very vitriolic comments.

Capitalism.

In the end of the day, conscious people would generally not support folks and firms who embody Bad Things.

For example, I am not going to congratulate Charlie Sheen as epic, or else I'd risk scrutiny from like-minded people. Not because Charlie Sheen doesn't deserve scrutiny, but truly because said thing won't work, and also because people can have a scrutiny of standards expected from me as I personally interact with them or represent certain causes or institutions.

In the effort of salvaging the discussion: I'd disagree. The inherent problem isn't so much that he owns and wears a shirt like this, it's the context in which he wore it. That would be a responsibility beyond the manufacturer's scope.

The video wasn't loading so I went off the description of it - Now I see that he barely cried and just looked a little sad. I was under the impression he'd had some kinda of mental crack and had been completely emotionally destroyed by harassment. Yeah, now I realise he's sad for doing something stupid and deserves to be a little sad about it.
