"Boiling" Hot or "Freezing" Cold?

Postby Lancaster of Wessex » Thu Nov 06, 2014 10:34 am

A simple question for you all:

Would you rather be "boiling" hot (i.e. suffering through hot temperatures, lack of rain, high UV indexes, etc.) or "freezing" cold (brutal wind chills, snow, ice, etc.), if you had to choose?

Having experienced one of the worst winters in recent memory, I have changed my stance of rather being freezing cold, to one of I'd rather deal with the heat.

Heat, while very trying on the lungs and other bodily functions, can be dealt with by just simply staying indoors in a nice air conditioned environment, hopefully readily available, or at least in front of several fans, with a lot of water nearby.

Freezing cold entails shoveling snow (bloody vexing), and difficulty walking by having to hurdle jump snow banks and maintaining one's balance on ice covered streets and sidewalks, as well as having to wear lair upon lair of clothes, when one does have to go outside.

So! Given the choice, which would you rather have to endure? And, if you live in a climate whereby you don't have to deal with snow, ice, sleet and other wintery terrors, you're all welcome to visit here in Canada!

As someone who lives in Arizona, a place with excessive heat, I can confidently say that freezing cold sounds preferable to boiling heat. When it's cold, you can warm up by throwing a few extra layers of clothes on. When it's hot, and you lack ac or something of the sort, you're fucked.

What does it for me is the work that being cold entails. Walking is a complete pain in the ass, traffic gets totally mangled by accidents, and even power failures are ripe for happening if major ice storms (as hit Toronto last year) occur.

If it's cold, I can slap on clothes and/or turn on the heater. If it's hot, I can take my clothes off and pray that the AC isn't having a bad day, and wish that I could take my flesh off to cool off without killing myself.

Besides, I like being cold. When it's cold out, I can either be chilled or be snuggly&cozy. I walk around outside when it's below freezing in slip-ons, a T-shirt, and shorts. I can officially say that I do not mind the cold. The only problems I see are shoveling snow (where I live it doesn't snow/rain/etc. much at all) and my hands locking up from the cold, but I can put on gloves to handle the latter.

If you're lazy enough to sit indoors with the AC I'm lazy enough to sit indoors with my heater and a few blankets.

One has to go outside eventually though, can't just stay indoors all day until the cold snap is over or snow all melts away...so when the time DOES come to go outside, i'd rather have to face heat than the challenges of snow and ice and bitter winds.

I've been to places hot and cold, lived through days of ice and nights of frost, days of fire and nights of humidity, and I can safely say I'd choose freezing over boiling :lol2:

As someone who lives in a very hot place with suffocating humidity I would wish you the best of luck, you poor soul.

Btw, I have lived in both very cold climates and very hot climates. For me, I preferred the cold infinitely more.

I find cold far more tolerable than heat. I don't thermoregulate very well in heat - I sweat buckets, dehydrate easily and have gotten heat stroke more than once even in fairly temperate southern Canadian summers. There's only so much you can do to get cool in the summer, but with the cold at least we have the very finest in engineered clothing to make it if not comfortable than at least tolerable.

Whether you love it or hate it, cold is easier to deal with. If you can go inside, problem solved. Same with heat. But if you can't, in the cold you can put on layers, but you can only strip down so much in the heat.

Even without any of that considered, I personally prefer the cold. I've been in two situations- broken heater and broken air conditioner.
With the broken heater, we had an ice storm and it was below freezing all the time even inside the house. With the broken air conditioner, it was over 100 (that's something like 40 in Celsius) all the time in the house. Given the choice between those two experiences, ice storm all year.

No, i only found out about that character after i created this nation.

I just liked the sound of "Huskar". Who knows i probably heard of the DOTA 2 character at some point in the past and the word got stuck in my head, cant remember really.

And yes you do not want to be an Angry Huskar. Im... not nice to be around when im angry.
