What will be the major issues for our children/grandchildren

Postby Eleanor Ritas » Fri Oct 31, 2014 1:33 pm

My Father lived and was socialized in a time when some Governors in the US were openly fighting integration. There were intense public arguments over whether the Federal Government could force skills to allow blacks in.

I will tell my offspring about how angry so many people were that there was a law trying to get Healthcare for everybody in a time when the rest of the industrialized world included model national public healthcare systems. I will tell him there were people who had to live on the street because they had no money. I will tell him I was at the DMV office when a screen put up a news snippet that a q-bit had maintained its state for like 32 seconds or something. I remember thinking how long a time that is in computer time. How quickly life flows. My son will see the coming of quantum computers, and the bizarre Lovecraftian algorithms that snake across them and live in the emptiness between nothing and everything.

What will he see? What will his generation fight over?

What do you think, NSG?

My opinion is reflected in the biased and limited poll options, so freely pick "Other" and go in like Peyton Manning, who will probably still be with the Broncos when my son is my age. As an uploaded sentient intelligence group that players can access by their ear pieces, if their skulls aren't hardwired for wifi by then. Maybe some kind of organic grown radio-interactive webbing. I dunno.

Should NATO (aka the United States) go to war with Russia to defend Germany?

Yup, I bet all of Eastern Europe will be lost by the next generation.
JUSTICE FOR WALLENBURG! GenSec wants the community to see and judge the relevant messages, M/A is ensuring that only one side of the story can be (very vaguely) told. That should tell us everything.

Ooooh, yes, that's a good one. Let's pretend it's included in natural Earth State preservation, a blanket environmental set of policies.

If NATO had failed to protect Eastern Europe (which is extremely unlikely), it would be long gone. There would be no NATO in the next generation if Russia had invaded Eastern Europe.

The hats.

When they first talked to us, we thought they wanted to be friends. After the first few deaths we still thought they could be reasoned with. But by then it was already too late. Stop the hats while you still have the chance.

Heavy Metal Socialism will be difficult to explain.

"Sooo, you have to have long hair, listen to loud music, wear ugly t-shirts with weird names, combat boots and read Karl Marx?"
"Yes."
"But why?"
"Because you're an capitalist pigdog and I think we switched you in the hospital, that's why Comrade-son."

Every other year the projections change. I'd bet my bottom dollar that there won't be 12 billion by 2100.

We're using our imaginations that "Earth natural state preservation" would include climate and other environmental issues.

So, if I say "all even numbers", it's like asking why I didn't include 4. I did. It does. Same as above.

Definitely overpopulation. Population growth may be slowing down but we will need decades until we stabilize. And by then we may even exceed 10 billion people. Even today there are nations that breed like crazy, such as Nigeria or India.

It is believed that our demand for scarce materials, such as oil or rare earths will skyrocket in the future, mainly because of overpopulation and that we will need many "planet earths" to cover this demand. I'd like to see how the world will cope with this now that we seem to enter an age where both the prices and the demand for electronic devices is surging.

Alternatively, if we do find a way to cheaply and massively produce everything, the main issue for the next generations will be the transition from a capitalist economy to a post-scarcity one.

Post-scarcity economy? Dude that's highly unlikely, if not impossible. One of the cores ideas of economics is that human needs are infinite. Since human needs are infinite and resources are finite (which they are), scarcity will continue to be a thing until the end of time.
