Your Favorite National Anthem (besides Your Country's)

Postby Elsa the Snow Queen » Sat Oct 25, 2014 1:05 pm

What is your favorite national anthems besides that of your nation? (i.e.: Don't say Star Spangled Banner if American or O Canada if Canadian or God Save the Queen if British) These are my favorite anthems:

1. Anthem of Russia/Anthem of the USSR: Something about the Russians, while screwing up their politics and history, they always seem to have the best anthems

2. Anthem of South Africa: Pretty much a tie with the Russian Anthem, I love the South African anthem, it is very moving and patriotic as well as peaceful

3. O Canada: Another passionate anthem, a close second to the one of South Africa

4. Anthem of Germany: I don't agree with all its lyrics (especially "Germany above all") but I love the tune

5. Anthem of France: Very bloody lyrics but cool tune

These are all closely tied but I'd add the anthems of Kazakhstan, Israel, The UK, Mexico, and Chile

That's not actually the CP's anthem, that is just the USSR's anthem adapted into English by Paul Robeson during the War as a show of support for the USSR.

1. Turkish National Anthem. It sounds like something Darth Vader would march his troops to.

2. Central African Republic Anthem. It has a nice tune for such a poor country.

3. Venezuelan National Anthem. For once it actually honors the people.

4. Swedish Anthem. Good tune and very inspirational.

5. Swiss Anthem. It may be religious but hey, what the hell.

Many other nations have good anthems and if I were to list all of them then this'd be very long.

I've always really loved the Polish national anthem.
In fact, I like it rather more than the American anthem. Why we let that joker Scott write the anthem instead of just adopting Yankee Doodle, I will never understand. Plus, it'd be much more fun to play it at functions involving visiting UK officials or other such instances. Because irony makes for the best national anthems.

Ah. Never knew that. Paul seemed to have an interesting life too.

The Mongolian and the Bhutanese anthems. I don't really like the lyrics, but the instrumentals (especially the Olympic versions) are very nice.

Gonna go with the cliche answer and say Austrian. God, that song is beautiful.
Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.
We have nothing to lose but the world. We have our souls to gain.

I really dislike my national anthem. God Save The Queen is rubbish, my republican tendencies aside. So dreary and monotonous.

Whilst not an official national anthem, I am a fan of Flower of Scotland.

I like the British anthem, the lyrics are alright, could be better but the actual music is pretty good.

In the case of Germany, that isn't actually part of the official anthem... Only the third stanza is. And the "above all" refers to having a unified Germany "above all" the smaller kingdoms and duchies that made up the German Confederation in the middle of the 19th century, and is not supposed to mean "better than all other countries". It's more that, above all, the author wanted a unified Germany more than anything else in the world.

The French anthem refers to the bloody times of the French revolution.

The melody is exactly the same, they borrowed ours and made new lyrics for themselves in estonian. :p

But EU's anthem is actually very good now that you mention it.
