Zombie Opt-Out Option

Postby Quilavaland » Thu Oct 23, 2014 2:43 am

Well in another thread that basically turned into just a pointless bickering match, one sensible person told me to take my suggestion here instead of the temporary Zombie forum.

Now what I'm suggesting is, for 2015's zombie event and all events after that (I acknowledge trying to add it right now for 2014 would be impractical), there should be an opt-out button so people don't have to see their population turn into zombies.

The benefits would far outweight the problems.

Anyone who doesn't opt out could still play the zombie event, and it surely wouldn't take too long to code, I mean every issue has a "dismiss" button on it.

It would stop "noobs" like me who don't like their citizens dying complaining, save a lot of confusion from people who don't read the news or forums and better fit in line with the optional customisable nature of everything else in the game, from the world assembly to the invasion game.

So far nobody's come up with a sensible argument against this, so I think it should be done.

Admins have better things to do than coding opt-outs for an event that occurs once a year, and can be ignored if you're not interested in it.

Doesn't it change your page though?

Mandatory fun is not fun, as I said before. Everything else on this website is optional so I could pick and choose the things that involve what I think is fun and not death and competition, which to me are the two least fun things on the planet.

But if I'm the only one who cares then I guess I might as well give up :/

I won't try to transplant the debate from the original thread to here, but the essence of the situation is that the game admins have put time and effort into putting together a fun, temporary departure from the normal workings of the game that eveyone had a good time with when it was introduced as an April Fool's joke. To ask them to put in more of their unpaid, voluntarily-contirbuted time and effort into prevent a handful of people's nation pages from changing for a mere 24 hours strikes me as rather unnecessary.

Well if they put that much effort into an april fools' joke and they care so much about whether people have fun, then surely it's not too big just to put one option in that's presumably no more complicated than dismiss, if the effects are as minor as people say.

Also it's not a one off 24 hour joke, it's 36 hours every year. If it's going to be a permanent annual thing it should be treated like one.

Though I guess since an admin actually said it would be too much effort maybe it's more complicated than I think it is, I don't know.

I'd definitely support an opt out option and coding an opt out should have been thought about in the beginning.

I know essentially nothing about the game mechanics involved here, but I do know that if you just don't log onto NationStates during those 36 hours and then come back afterward, you will notice that nothing has changed. Isn't either indulging in a 36-hour minigame with no lasting consequences or going outside to enjoy the weekend offline more fun for everyone than asking the mods to do more coding?

Here, I'll sing you a little song to teach you how coding works.

99 little bugs in the code, 99 little bugs. Take one down, patch it around, 127 little bugs in the code.

That's why they won't make a opt=out option.

Bugs are rare on websites, if and when bugs do appears, it's usually not because the code was wrong, it's because everything else around it has changed... like security standards, or updating a piece of software.

An opt out code is very simple to implement if the code has been designed with modularity in mind (it should be).

Omg this is so true. I have exactly the same feeling with this zombie thing as when I saw all these songs auto-downloaded to my iPod. Although at least with U2 you could delete them later. They still stayed in my music with little cloud icons next to them though :/ xD

Well guess what, you don't have to even delete the zombie thing, because it deletes itself. Just treat it like I've treated issue for the past year; ignore it. The difference is my issues are still in my issues tab, and zombies will go away in a day and a half.

Well I won't pretend to know anything about coding so I'll just let you two decide on this then. But if the coding is possible and practical within the next 12 months I support a zombie opt-out, that's all I'll say.

I'm sure that if you or anyone else here codes one, the administrators will be more than happy to implement the idea.

You already have an opt-out option. It's not logging in for 36 hours. Nationstates isn't exactly an intense game - your nation will be fine if you leave it alone for a day.

Well alright then I can't code but anyone who can who is interested I encourage you to try making this opt-out :3

Your nation will be fine fullstop. It's literally 36 hours long with no lasting or permanent effect whatsoever. Toughen up, princess.

I already argued against that point of view so many times I won't even bother doing it again. Just look at the original thread "What Is This Whole Zombie Thing". I'm not repeating myself and annoying everyone about it here.

Slightly off topic to this:

Somehow I've get impression that Fighting against Zombies is considered as a Default response to Z-Day. Of course everyone can take different approach to it too. Let them eat your brains without resistance and spread them. That option is also available for those who would want opt-out from whole Z-day altogether. Simply put: Do nothing related to Z-Day. Ignore it. That way you help Z-population.

No permanent damage will happen to your populations. 36 hours of your life could be used to something else if you really don't want see Zombies. Nothing forces you login to your nations during Z-Day, right? --> Opt out.

Actually that is very sad thing. :( Permanent casualties to national populations would make whole thing much more interesting.
