Radio in your Nation

Postby Fonidia and Osteyon » Tue Oct 14, 2014 8:51 pm

(OOC: There's already a topic asking about this, but it's from 2 years ago, and it just has a single page)
Radio... as in radio broadcasting.

Is it all owned by the government? Is it heavily censored? Is it filled with state propaganda?
Or is it fully privatized, completely uncensored and filled with advertisements?
Say anything you can think about your national radio stations. Laws regulating radio, music that plays on your radio stations, how many stations there are, which are the most popular, the most hated, what do they broadcast... or tell us if, for X reason, you don't have radio... etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
---
Here in the F&O, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of radio stations scattered across the Union. The vast majority of them are privately owned. Large cities, such as the capital Royal District, have at least one tall radio tower, and have several radio stations specializing in several types of programmes, including almost every music genre, talk and educational programmes, news, sports, interviews, and even comedy programmes and radio dramas. This is specially true for the Royal District, where there are stations dedicated to broadcast even the most obscure music genres, or talk programmes about relatively obscure topics as well. As an added fact, the Royal District's (and the country's) tallest construction is the United Broadcasting Tower, popularly known as the Sky Tower, which is located in the city centre, and is 572 meters tall. Sky Tower is the city's main radio tower, although smaller radio towers are located in each of the Royal District's sub-districts.

There are many large, private radio broadcasting companies, which transmit their programming nationwide via radio affiliates in other cities and towns. The largest of these is the MGBC (Mansfield-Goldsmith Broadcasting Company, also known as "Mango"). The MGBC operates both the largest and most popular private television and radio systems in the Union. MGBC directly operates 8 radio stations; 4 of them are nationwide (MGBC Red, Blue, Green and Yellow), and four of them are regional (MGBC North, South, Central, and East Isles).

MGBC Red dedicates its programming to talk shows, and news and sports broadcasting. Blue dedicates to music and music-related programming, including interviews and talk shows with news about current music trends. Most of the music consists of both local and international pop. MGBC Green hosts comedy and drama shows, including soap operas, which are still popular here. Radio adaptations of plays and movies are also broadcast on Green. MGBC Yellow dedicates its programming mainly to educational content, including radio documentaries, and more serious talk shows about topics such as health, economy, etc. All regional stations transmit varied programming; a mix of music, talk shows, regional news and sports broadcasting, and comedy and drama shows. Some of the broadcasts are done in a different language depending on the region: MGBC North has some programmes in Ostish, South has programmes in Fonnish and Spanish, Central has programmes in both Ostish and Fonnish, along with some in foreign languages spoken by immigrants living in the region (including Italian, Japanese and Russian), and the East Isles station broadcasts some of its programmes in French.

In contrast, the Royal Broadcasting Company (RBC), is the Union's largest public broadcasting system. RBC's TV channels are as popular as the MGBC's, however, the MGBC leads in radio by a considerable margin, since the RBC only operates 6 radio stations; 3 of them are nationwide (RBC One, Two and Three) and 3 are regional (RBC Osteyon, Newshire, and Fonidia). The programming of the RBC is very similar to that of the MGBC, and generally, it's of the same high quality. However, the RBC lacks an equivalent to MGBC Green, and it doesn't have a station based on the Eastern Archipelago (commonly known as the East Isles).

Radio broadcasts first began in 1930 and, until 1974, the government of Stormaen had a monopoly on radio broadcasts. There were no private radio stations, although foreign long wave radio stations were available.

From 1975, the radio networks were privatised and the number (and some would say quality) of radio stations grew. The Stormaen Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) was privatised and soon collapsed under the weight of competition and lack of public funding.

Radio Stormaen was founded in 1975 and quickly became the largest radio network. Following public concern over a lack of public service broadcaster, the government agreed to offer up annual contracts to fund any radio station that broadcast a certain level of Stormaen content and public service and educational/informative content. Radio Stormaen has held the contract continually since 2002 (having lost it to SBS between 1989-1994 and 1999-2002).

Currently Radio Stormaen is the most popular radio station, followed by SBS. Stormaen Public Radio was founded in 2004 and has quickly grown to be Stormaen's third largest radio broadcaster. As the name suggests, it broadcasts no music (which makes it ineligible to receive public funds) and only features news and debate.

There are three radio companies in Sarmata. One is owned by the government, used for public broadcasts. The second is owned by a group of businessmen who use it for commercial purposes. And the third is owned by a multi-billionaire and is used for entertainment.

There are many radio stations in Vallermoore and there is very little censorship. They get into trouble if they
-slander someone
-urge lynching of anyone
-report certain secrets, such as the names of our spies or the true names of people in formal witness protection
-do pranks when it is not April Fool's Day.

Other then that they can broadcast what they like.

The exceptionalists required all households to have radios in order for them to be able to hear Caiaphas Kaiser's speeches morning, noon, and night. Nowadays we broadcast variety shows, music, news, radio dramas and even educational programming.

Each city has their own private radio stations, but there is one government superstation that is broadcast all over the world.

Is it all owned by the government?

Not all, but the most popular ones are.

Is it heavily censored?

Any profanity is edited, as well as heavy hate or discriminatory statements. Also, no Justin Bieber.

Is it filled with state propaganda?

No. There are Public Service Announcements such as ''no littering'' or ''child abuse is bad'' but those only play once in a while during advertisements.

Or is it fully privatized, completely uncensored and filled with advertisements?

Only a very small amount of radio stations are privatized but none are uncensored. Most channels have advertisements but on public stations, there are less. There are also ''ad-free stations'' or days where there are no ads.

Say anything you can think about your national radio stations. Laws regulating radio, music that plays on your radio stations, how many stations there are, which are the most popular, the most hated, what do they broadcast... or tell us if, for X reason, you don't have radio... etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Our most famous radio stations are NATV FM, Radio Anollasia, Rad FM, NATV News Radio, Radyo Yeni Istanbul, Radio 101, Roar FM. You must own a permit to set up a radio station. Radios broadcast pretty much anything, from music (almost any genre), to news, to weather, to sports, to traffic, to game shows, to talk shows, even to television serials.

Melvonians in general take great pride in what they call their cultural refinement (and what some other nations, and a handful of younger people in Port Stilton and Mornay City, would be more likely to call immense elitism and intellectual snobbery). The Melvonian Broadcasting Corporation, operationally independent but funded directly (and generously) by the Department for the Arts has four stations, devoted in two cases to proper music - classical and opera - with a great many live performances, particularly by the competing Port Stilton Symphonic Society and the Feta Hills Philharmonic, and in the other two to documentaries, dramatisations and discussions about literary matters, with the occasional sprinkling of science. MBC Radio IV broadcasts a 15-minute news slot twice a day, unless there isn't any news.

Because the majority of the audience considers advertising insupportably vulgar, independent radio is mostly a fringe activity carried out by amateur enthusiasts; though it isn't banned, the costs are prohibitive. However, many young Melvonians are accessing foreign broadcasts digitally, and some have even been inspired to create their own small, 'pop-up' stations online. Mostly they play terrible pop music between meatheaded 'banter', although there are rumours that a few mavericks have even begun to adopt the unpleasant and antisocial foreign custom of devoting whole shows, or segments of shows, to their own opinions on current affairs. How the Doge's government would react to such an unattractive habit spreading is at present a matter of speculation. However, it is widely known through unofficial channels that some years ago, while attending a World Assembly Conference somewhere in mid-Pacifica, Doge Loris I was accidentally exposed to a 'phone in show on Talkback Radio during a hotel-room breakfast, and responded swiftly and determinedly and with resort to the suite's nearest fire-extinguisher.

There is much radio in Soled, as most Soledans have one. The most common is the state-owned Soledan National Radio, which broadcasts programs about many various things, from comedy, arts, politics, news and much more. They have traditionally dominated the landscape, but in recent years a few other not state-owned radio stations have managed to gather feasible amounts of viewers, like ComedyGroup4, Free Soled Radio (noted for it's controversial stand to the government), and ReportsNow. (note that all of the radio names are actually in Soledan, i'm just too lazy to translate them right now)

All radio stations are privatized institutions but relegated under the direction of The Federal Council. It is illegal for a privatized radio station to play or promote any material not approved by the Federal Council. {So in that sense yes it is heavily censored, however DJ's are allowed to speak against the government but must make it clear to the listeners that The Federal Council does not endorse their idea.} Only Government sponsored advertisements are expressed on radio frequencies, including military frequencies.

Is it all owned by the government?
Nope. The government has its own radio station called the NKR (National Kenzinian Radio)

Is it heavily censored?
Nope. Not at all.

Is it filled with state propaganda?
Nope, except for NKR, though.

Or is it fully privatized, completely uncensored and filled with advertisements?
The other radio stations, yes.

Music that plays on your radio stations
Lots of different kinds of music. And we have our own music chart as well.

How many stations there are?
About 16, plus 1 government-owned station.

Which are the most popular?
Redwood FM and Mesa Radio. Redwood plays badass music, there's little ads, and they're hosting lots of cool quizzes with trips to other nations as the grand prize. Mesa broadcasts some epic talkshows, parodies of top songs, rap battles, and all those funny stuff.

The most hated?
Of course, the NKR. Filled with propaganda, boring news, and presidential speeches. :palm:

In 1944, the first radio company in Erquin opened, named Cryslid Station. With the nations many mountains and lack of infrastructure at the time, the station broadcast-d to farmers and villages in the mountain about food markets, sales, happenings in the country itself, economic change relating to inflation and product sale and music. The station still serves today.

1956, the commercial radio company, Aterox, opened up somewhere in the city of Judana. Its radio station was large and it broadcasted raffles, and little "Call-em-up" contests. The company started expanding, with about 8 stations now in service.

1978, another radio company was focused on the news, and it serves valiantly to today, starting some where at Apple Ridge. Currently, with its 12 stations, they have been documenting the Erquinian-Sylvan war going on RIGHT NOW.

The English Regions Broadcasting Corporation was established on the 1st April 1919 by the MInistry of Culture to act independently, and began broadcasting in the Capital Zripton and the two surrounding states on the 1st July, providing six hours of radio a day, three in the afternoon from 12 to 3, and three in the evening from 7 to 10. The service was completely commercial free and consisted almost exclusively of news and two hours of classical music a day.

By the 1st January 1925, fifty six of the seventy eight states had a radio service, by this time the drama and children's' hour had both been introduced, along with a hour of educational programming. This resulted in radio from midday till ten o'clock at night becoming the norm. In 1929, for May Day, the last three states of the English Regions received reception for radio. This made radio a nationwide service.

On the 31st of December 1930, the Broadcasting Corporation announced that a second service would be founded on the 1st March 1931, which would focus the music, the existing service would be renamed the "News Service" instead of English Regions Radio and the New Service would be called the " Entertainment Service". Due to existing infrastructure the service became a nationwide service by Christmas Day 1932.

A number of other changes occurred in the next 20 years such as the start of regional news programming from the 1st January 1933, and the increase of radio from ten hours a day to sixteen in 1934, with a service being provided from six in the morning till 10 o'clock at night. Then in 1937, the service was extended to eighteen; before a 24/7 service was introduced on the 1st of January 1939. In 1951, with the rise of jazz and rock n' roll a new service was provided, called " The Popular Service".

In 1962, the services were modernised into their present-day form with ERBC radio 1, 2 and 3 being set up, along with ERBC Radio News. They remained completely commercial free and were funded through general taxation. In 1971, regional stations were established, and in 2002, commercial stations were permitted, yet take-up was very disappointing, and to this day only 23 states out of 78 have commercial stations. Today, a number of foreign radio stations mostly public operate providing a number of different viewpoints.

Or is it fully privatized, completely uncensored and filled with advertisements?

Is it all owned by the government?
No. There is, however a government owned broadcast agency which provides news, cultural enlightenment and domestically produced music on it's radio channels, and varied programs on it's television channels. It is provided in high definition for those who want it.
Is it heavily censored?
Censorship? What is that?
Is it filled with state propaganda?
Heh. I remember when we used to have propaganda.
Or is it fully privatized, completely uncensored and filled with advertisements?
There is a huge private sector in broadcasting and the majority of it's income comes from advertising.

Stations that advertise themselves as a certain theme, or type of broadcast must conform to their chosen theme/broadcast type and provide the Ministry of Communications with adequate notice in the event that they change their theme/broadcast type. Music that plays on Ashyarian broadcast stations is typically varied, many stations catering to mixed audiences, some with electronic pop and classic rock mixed together. The Ministry of Communications 2013 Census tells that there are currently 25,734 Commercial Broadcast Transmitters in Ashyaria, with tens of thousands of private ones.
The most popular type of station listened to is, according to a poll, again, the varied stations. The least popular is typically country.

Radio used to be extremely popular. Thousands tuned in every day. There were obvious things like the news, yet there was quite a variety, such as channels where people would tell stories, talk shows or mainly music. In the 1990s, radio started to die down and more citizens would go over to TV and eventually online. There are very few stations and all you would hear on our radios nowadays is dubstep music and the news, or maybe a very occasional story.
