Your nation's military alertness levels

[Athylland]

What system does your nation use to indicate (primarily to its armed forces and civillian intelligence agencies, but perhaps also to the population at large) what level of threat the country faces?

In Athylland, the Cabinet sets a Defence Alertness Level (Dal) to indicate the current level of threat faced by the country.

The Dals are:
Dal-5 – Peacetime military readiness
This indicates normal peacetime readiness.

Dal-4 – Upgraded peacetime military readiness
This indicates the possibility of a threat. At Dal-4 heightened security measures are applied at all military facilities and national key points (such as important state buildings, ports of entry, power plants and other key infrastructure necessary for the country's continued functioning). An intensification of civillian intelligence gathering in relation to the perceived threat, and possibly low-level military reconnaissance, usually accompanies this. Citizens of Athylland are to be issued a travel advisory warning them to stay clear of the danger zone, and non-military, non-intelligence gathering Athylish civillians in the danger zone at the time are to be advised to return home.

Dal-3 – Peacetime high alert
This indicates a confirmed threat. At Dal-3 active duty personnel of the Athylish National Defence Force (ANDF) begin low-level mobilisation, all reserves are put on standby for a call-up and the ANDF switches from peacetime radio call signs and frequencies to classified call signs and encrypted frequencies. Civillian intelligence operatives are usually, though not necessarily, pulled out of the danger zone, while military reconnaissance is stepped up, possibly including the deployment of special forces.

Dal-2 – Standby mobilisation and Dal-2/NT – Standby mobilisation/Nuclear threat
This indicates a confirmed highly dangerous threat (of a nuclear nature in the case of Dal-2/NT) and a high risk of war. At Dal-2 the ANDF commences full mobilisation of active duty and reserve personnel while wartime security measures are implemented at all military bases and national key points. At Dal-2/NT the country's nuclear forces are readied (warheads are attached, missiles are fueled, nuclear submarines are put on standby to sail and mobile launch sites are decided on).

Dal-1 – State of war and Dal-1/NT – State of war/Nuclear threat
This indicates a state of war. At Dal-1 the ANDF is put on full combat readiness and offensive operations may commence. If Dal-1/NT follows Dal-1 rather than Dal-2/NT, then Dal-2/NT is implemented immediately followed by Dal-1/NT, at which the country's nuclear forces are put on standby (warheads are armed, and nuclear submarines and mobile missile launchers are deployed).

Dal-0 – Existential threat
This indicates the possibility of the total destruction of Athylland. It is only at Dal-0 that the country's nuclear weapons may be used.

Either they are active, or on leave. It's quite simple, really.

[Xmara]

We have 6 levels of "nastorojenost" (literally means "alertness" in Xmaranese). It's commonly abbreviated to Nast.

Nast-0: Safe. Also called Kod Hasiru (Code Green). No dangers going on. Go about normal business.

Nast-1: Precaution. Also called Kod Kítrino (Code Yellow). Slight threat to safety. Continue to monitor for additional threat.

Nast-2: Threat detected. Also called Kod Zoloto (Code Gold). Generally means somebody has made a threat to the nation. Be on high alert.

Nast-3: Atrack has been made on the nation. Also called Kod Orenji (Code Orange). Someone is attacking the nation and action must be taken immediately.

Nast-4: War. Also called Kod Karmir (Code Red). We are currently involved in a war.

Nast-5: The nation is about to be destroyed. Also called Kod Sev (Code Black). Prepare evacuations for citizens.

Currently at a Nast-1.

[Olerand]

Olérand's military and intelligence alertness levels are known as Plan Vigilance.
It has five levels:

0-White: No threat, absence of any indication of a threat.
1-Yellow: Imprecise threat, no confirmed threat level, heightened security.
2-Orange: Possible threat, preparation for an attack.
3-Red: Threat is highly probable, plans of preparedness for grave attacks.
4-Scarlet: Certain threat, plans of preparedness for major attacks.

[Umbrae Lunares]

There are three possible states a thoughtform colony can be in with regards to military alertness: isolation, competition, and total war.

Isolation

A colony in this state is too separated from other colonies to be engaged in violence with any of them. This does not necessarily imply geographic distance, since thoughtforms (and many other species) are capable of teleporting long distances with minimal effort. Rather, it means that a colony's existence is relatively unknown, whether that be due to young age or deliberate secrecy. Most colonies of this type have been recently created, since thoughtforms go to great lengths to keep tabs on all rival colonies and are unlikely to let one go undetected for long periods of time.

Such colonies tend to have a high proportion of scouts and constructors, so as to build up their city as fast as possible.

Competition

The default state for most colonies, this denotes a group of thoughtforms who are engaged in raiding, kidnapping, and sabotage against their neighbors, but who are not powerful enough to completely assimilate them. Two colonies that know of each other's existence will almost always begin competing immediately, desiring to weaken one another to the point of being able to invade and assimilate the other. However, this process is difficult and time consuming, so colonies may be stuck in a state of competition for years before one eventually succumbs.

Such colonies have a normal proportion of soldiers and sycophants to engage in combat, but still maintain a healthy scout population in order to grow their forces.

Total War

When a colony becomes stronger than one of its neighbors by a certain margin, it will usually attempt to capture the city by force. When this occurs, both colonies enter a state of total war, where one side is bent on overwhelming and defeating their target, and the other side wants to preserve its autonomy and, hopefully, weaken the invaders enough to allow for a counterattack. Total war can also occur when an alien civilization attempts to exterminate a colony for their own reasons, in which case the defenders will divert all available resources to survival.

Such colonies tend to have a high proportion of sycophants relative to the other castes, since they offer the most mental power for the information spent on making them. Constructors in these colonies often build additional defenses or attempt to conceal themselves completely so as to avoid targeting by the enemy.

[Wolfenia]

Wolfenia uses a seven point decending scale known as ND&MAL (National Defence and Millitary Alertness Level)

ND&MAL 6: Threat of war is completely minimal unless a sudden and impactful political crisis occurs.

ND&MAL 5: Low political tensison betwen Wolfenia and potential enemies. (most comonly seen level)

MD&MAL 4: Medium politcal tension betwen Wolfenia and potential enemies. (current securety level)

ND&MAL 3: War a realistic posibillity but unlikely, the general public is alerted though overlays on all TV stations and on internet sites (public buildings & websites only)

MD&MAL 2: Reserves are told to report to base get their gear and be ready for a conflict. Public alterted through special news reports.

MD&MAL 1: Martial law Imposed. (never the active level at any time)

MD&MAL 0: War has begun.

[Yukonastan]

Yukonastan uses THRETCON, to avoid copyright infringement.

There are five level of THRETCON, from five to one.

Five is peace.
Four is heightened readiness, war possible.
Three is heightened readiness or limited war.
Two is all-out war, nuclear possible.
One is nuclear imminent.

Yukonastan is officially at THRETCON 5, however, due to Cold War and Cod Wars political tensions, all forces are actually at THRETCON 4, with limited THRETCON 3 engagements.

The Holy Empire's Imperial Military uses a joint Threat Level with the Imperial Intelligence Ministry called the Threat Assessment Level (TAL)

Blue -- Full on war with the use of WMDs not only authorized but used.
Red -- Full on war with the use of WMDs only authorized.
Orange -- Full on war, no use or consideration of WMDs.
Yellow -- Heightened National Security, Military Shock Units called up, Diplomacy is still the main choice.
Green -- Peace Time Readiness. Military on normal routines and standby.

[The Federal Triumvirate of Xing]

Xing uses a system known as Nerevrane, or simply abbreviated to NRV.

NRV-7 = Absolute Peace, no militarian conflict.
NRV-6 = Relative Peace, low tension.
NRV-5 = Escalating Conflict, high tension.
NRV-4 = Escalating Conflict, excessive tension, troops deployed.
NRV-3 = Excessive Conflict, excessive tension, militarian invasion.
NRV-3H = Excessive Homefront Conflict, excessive civilian tension, militarian invasion of streets, martial law
NRV-2 = Absolute Conflict, frightening tension, militarian invasion, governmental usurpation and execution, annexed into Xing.
NRV-1 = Condemning Conflict, absolute tension, troop withdrawal, large-scale nuclear annihilation, mass civilian and militant genocide of opposition.




Xing is usually at either 7 or 6. However, in the case of NRV-2, the entire Imperial Frontier will invade your country and work to annihilate any opposition. In the case of NRV-1, the entire region of The Imperial Frontier of Abzan will launch and detonate all biological, nuclear, and explosive warheads. After, they will then send in all troops in the region and have them begin killing the few survivors.

[Freedenea]

Freedenea's military has 5 alertness levels.

Level 5 - Peacetime - No active military threats, military goes about normal business

Level 4 - Alert Peacetime - Possibility of military threat against Freedenea, military begins defensive maneuvers

Level 3 - Minor Warfare - Minor combat against Freedenea has begun, military has begun maneuvers to deal with threat

Level 2 - Total Warfare - Large scale combat against Freedenea, military is authorized to use every weapon in it's arsenal to deal with threat, excepting nuclear weapons

Level 1 - Nuclear War - Nuclear missiles have been launched against Freedenea, military is authorized to use them in retaliation

We really only have two "levels":

1. normal everyday readiness to meet any threat
2. full mobilization of all of our available resources

We don't anticipate ever needing level 2.

We don't bother with military alertness levels, simply because it's much easier and less resource-costly to just say "HEY GUYS, WE'RE BEING INVADED" than faff about with a complex system of readiness levels. If we anticipate a threat from a country over our border, we simply fortify our borders (more so than they already are, I mean) or launch a pre-emptive assault. As goes the catchphrase of a famous animated character from Soviet times, "Simples".

Maldovania is always on Dal-2 – Standby mobilization and Dal-2/NT – Standby mobilization/Nuclear threat

[Terrad]

Terrad uses TIPI: Terradese Invasion Probability Indicator.
Currently its on TIPI-4: Prepared for invasion.
This is because of Terrad's lack of army. It has to be prepared for an invasion as it is a prime target. In the case of an invasion, Terrad will have its wars fought by KAS SRD.

[Brellach]

As with many things in Brellach, the alertness level system used by Her Legion of Light is fairly straightforward, if worded in a round-about manner:

4. No Threats to Her or Brellach - Peacetime readiness levels. Training maneuvers are conducted on a regular basis to keep Legionnaires sharp.

3. Threats Against Her or Brellach - Some or all of Her Legion are mobilised for action, often in response to aggressive overtones by foreigners, but not deployed anywhere (this level has, in the past, been used to classify minor combat deployments overseas, deployments unlikely to result in larger actions). Drills are conducted continuously.

2. War - All of Her Legion is mobilised and some or all of it deployed, either to defensive positions or action abroad.

1. She is in Danger - Reserved for events such as an invasion of Brellach. Her Legion will conscript all viable candidates into military service, and the Brellachi tribes will be armed where necessary and compelled by the terms of The Compact to join the fray, if they haven't chosen to do so already. They will do everything in their power to protect the Divine Queen and push back the enemy if possible, and the citizenry would be expected to do the same.

Level 8 - Peace and quiet, nothing going on
Level 7 - Relatively quiet with some rumbles far away but no big deal
Level 6 - There is peace here, but there is war and disaster not too far away
Level 5 - Crises abroad are uncomfortably close to here, the military is on alert
Level 4 - War or disaster is upon us, the military is ready to meet any threats
Level 3 - Nation is engaged in a major war, the military is using its full power
Level 2 - Invasion! Enemy must be repelled at all costs!
Level 1 - Nuclear annihilation! Total War! Every saur for himself!

In Gandoor, we use Threat Alertness Levels (Officially abbreviated to ThAL), which replaced the previous Military Threat Levels, used since 1932, in 1967.

ThAL-05: Peacetime. No military threats to Gandoor. Military continues with peacetime operations.

ThAL-04: Alert Peacetime. Possible military threats to Gandoor. Slightly enhanced security near major government buildings and ones that are open to the public have their hours curtailed, but still visitable. Diplomacy is still preferred solution at this stage.

ThAL-03: Limited War. Limited military actions against Gandoor is occurring. Military sends out limited troops to deal with the threat. Major government buildings given extremely enhanced security and ones that are open to the public have their hours curtailed even more, but still visitable during certain periods.. Diplomacy is still preferred solution at this stage.

ThAL-02: Full War. Enemy forces engaging against Gandoor completely. Military utilizes full force to counter threat. All major government buildings heavily guarded 24/7 and all that are open to the public are closed until ordered otherwise.

ThAL-01: Gandoor Invaded. Enemy forces have launched an invasion of Gandoor's territory. Military ordered to use whatever means necessary to halt their advance. All government buildings put on lock-down and the Prime Minister and other important politicians taken to secure locations for their safety. Citizens told to stay in their homes and do not leave under any circumstances.

In the 52 years since the ThAL system was implemented, Gandoor has never gone below ThAL-05.

Our military (or rather, our automated defence systems) is always in a state of readiness, able to accurate identify and respond appropriately to threats in milliseconds. Beyond that, anything that poses an existential threat to Siazen itself would be met by a full mobilisation of society's resources - something that we have never, and hopefully will never, have to do.
