It is 1965 and America is in another Asian war. Communist North Vietnam has been supporting a Communist Viet Cong in Democratic(ish) South Vietnam, supported by the United States. SInce the start of the Cold War and the division of Vietnam at the 17th Parallel the US has been supporting the South Vietnamese against the VC and North Vietnam. Until recently though it had just been sending military advisors to train the bureaucratic, politicized mess that is the South Vietnamese Army (who had a habit to coup the government), but that all changed after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. Apparently a North Vietnamese boat opened fire on the USS Maddox last year allowing for President Johnson to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution allowing for the US to intervene in South Vietnam.

You are a member of the 1st Infantry Platoon of the 101st Airborne Battalion and you have been stationed in Pleiku, a heavily forested region in South Vietnam. Here you have on mission, to secure the survival of South Vietnam and stop Communism from taking over indochina. Here you will be under almost constant attack from the VC who have multiple strongholds around Firebase Freedom, your station in the province. If you do well than you might just be promoted, if you dont then your dead, end of story.

Jon didn't perform well in school and eventually decided to join the army. It wasn't an easy choice but he felt well about it as soon as he began going through training. As one of the youngest members of the 1st platoon and a private, Jon doesn't excel anywhere and is still unexperienced, yet he is optimist about the mission.

Anyway, I'm game. I'm assuming we're 101st airborne, because of Pleiku? Also keep in mind that the use of firebases was somewhat limited out there, few tended to be isolated because of the number of PAVN regiments in the Ashau valley as opposed to the Viet Minh in the Mekong Delta. While in 1965 the VC were quite active there, that decreased exponentially by 1967. The strategic aim of units around there was less search and destroy and more to keep Highway 19 open twenty-four hours a day. It wouldn't be til 1969 that the objective changed to persistent airmobile searches in that part of the world.

We'd also probably be fairly reasonable to assume the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment since they patrolled Highway 19 pretty constantly. I'll throw up an app when we get that squared away.

Well thats fine, but you could have a 1st platoon of the larger 101st airborne division. Platoons are numbered one through four, companies have alphabetical designators (Back then it was Alpha, Baker, Charlie, etc though not always, some were given different designators by their commanders, for example the 4th battalion 39th infantry regiment, 9th infantry division used Attack, Battle, etc).


If you want to create a fictional division that's cool, but you should define the type. Airborne, air cavalry, armored cavalry, infantry, light infantry (predominately draftees) etc.
