Backstory:
There are three types of men in this world - those who have life given to them on a golden platter, those who are doomed to live in the dirt, and those who make their fortunes.
For some, the world is gift-wrapped, ready for the taking. They are born into nobility, and they will at least be sure to have a roof over their heads, a bellyful of food, and a good home for many years. These men grow up to be Lords and Kings - looking down upon those below with a sneer.
For others, life dealt them a bad deck of cards. They stagnate, their lives stay as dust. They could never hope to achieve the level of importance which their betters have. They live to serve or to die. Plain and simple.
Then, there are the last ones. These ones may not have the greatest of beginnings, but life has given them one thing - ambition. Some have the ability to fight their way into the halls of fame, others can get there by cunning and tact. They make sacrifices, and gain a lot - maybe more than the men with lives of silver platters.
In the land of Athendor, these three types of man exist. Some are kings and lords in towers of stone and gold, some are peasants who live below them, and some are traders and militants, who have made their own ways, and know the world's tricks.
This Roleplay will explore the dynamics between these characters in this land. Kingdoms and republics, castles and cities all dot the land, and while some people rule, others conquer and trade.
For this is a land of extremes,
This is a land of potential,
This is A Land of Traders and Kings.
NO IC YET! Waiting for involvement.
OOC:
Information:
Okay, so this is a collaborative, worldbuilding, character-based Roleplay. Each person may have a character (or more - whatever you like) who can be one of many things, including lords, kings, traders, generals, bishops even (if they take your fancy...).
Not only this, but the map (which I will make soon, I swear...) will be updated as time moves on, and as the world becomes more in-depth. Cities will come into existence, castles spring up over the landscape, and borders will be cut into the land, separating one demesne from another.
Hopefully, there will be a development in character also, as each character runs into new obstacles, other characters and problems.
Lore and Culture:
Since this is worldbuilding at its finest, you get to make up all of the lore. Of course, if will need to be proposed and discussed OOC'ly, to prevent too much bad stuff from happening, but everything will develop.
Religions:
Religions will be added as the RP progresses.
Languages:
While a new language may be created for particular cultures, the lingua Franca is Low Athendoric (a.k.a; English...).
Language list:
-Athendoric Family
--Low Athendoric
--High Athendoric
-Quar Family
--Royal Quar
Ranks of characters:
Noble:
Emperors: Ruler of an Empire, vassals pay fealty to them.
Kings: Pretty simple, they rule a Kingdom, and their vassals pay fealty to them.
Lords: Any other noble rank. They are vassals to kings.
Mercantile:
Doges: Basically the president. They rule a Republic.
Mayors: They rule a city. They can be vassals to anyone.
Religious:
Archbishops: They are one step above Bishops. They have an Archdiocese or Archbishopric.
Bishops: They rule a diocese, which unless an actual political entity (called a Bishopric) serve under a liege and have no political power.
Priests: They rule (heh) a church. They will probably be a focal point in a city or town.
Military:
Any military rank will do. While knights and the like can form mercenary bands, most fight for a liege of some description. There are navies and armies, and both can fight for republics, kingdoms, bishoprics even, money, or just themselves, depending on whatever they want.
Courtly:
Liege a may demand many courtiers to do their bidding. These include spymasters, diplomats, stewards etc. at the discretion of the person making the character.
Peasants:
Seriously? Who wants to play as a farmer, baker or regular soldier?
You may pick these, but there are no real benefits other than expanding the story... Which is always good.
Map:
Heheh... No map yet, but I will be posting a map on the morrow, and that shall be a guideline. Remember, things will be added to the map as they come.
For example, these things may be added to the map once it is made:
-Realms (Kingdoms, Republics, Bishoprics etc.)
-Cities (And towns and villages)
-Castles
-Places of interest (clearings in woods, shrines, rivers, temples etc.)
-I'll even let you include islands. If you really want.
-Anything else I may forget.
Please try to be specific about where things are to be posted. I will try to be faithful to your ideas. Even better is if you post a map.
(That is, when I have made the map...)
Rules:
1: No godmodding! Plain and simple. Two warnings will be given, after that, godmodders are banned. As such, no unprofessional behaviour. Maintain a good attitude please.
2: maintain the technological limits. This may be a made-up world, but the point stands - technology is no more advanced than the medieval world was. Any technology can be discussed in the OOC.
3: No one-liners! Engage the character in the world we are creating. Delve deeply into the ice-cream pot of a good story, and bring out a delicious scoop of Roleplay. Also, please don't just wait for things to happen. Unless you are waiting for the other half of a conversation or battle, then try to keep on expanding your character.
4: No magic! I have spoken! (If anyone insists on magic, then they shall not pass...)
5: Remember that the map and world is continually updated, but we cannot hope to find every detail if it is entrenched in the nether-world of the IC. Notify us about the creation of places and characters in the OOC.
6: Try to be mostly reasonable and realistic. If it benefits the story, but may be contestable, bring it up in the OOC. No short travel times over the entire land.
7: All details are discussed, or at least mentioned in the OOC, just to make the best story possible. I will not misuse my powers as OP, and I'll expect no-one else to misuse the RP either.
8: Humans only. Although by popular demand, this may be changed.
And now, Signups.
