Neoreaction: The Dark Enlightenment

Postby Shaggai » Sun Sep 14, 2014 4:35 pm

This topic was threadjacking the liberal education thread, so I made this on Agritum's suggestion. What are your views on Neoreaction and related things?

Neoreaction (abbreviated as Nrx, also known as the Dark Enlightenment) is a set of far-right political views, mostly based on rejection of democracy in favor of something resembling monarchy. Many nrx also support patriarchy, and some support eugenics. It covers a pretty wide range, from radical transhumanists to people who simply believe that democracy is a bad idea. We don't have any self-identified nrx on NSG as far as I know, but if there are any lurking around, feel free to post.

Personally, I think that they have very interesting ideas. They tend to pose good questions, even if they get the answers wrong, and the ideas behind their beliefs are useful.

I think they're of the same ideological ken as the anti-vaccination movement. People who have lived in stable Western democracies all their lives and look back at dusty old tyrannies with the sort of fondness that can only come from someone several generations distant from having actually lived under the sort of nasty authoritarian regimes they look up to.

Upon searching it I've found it has it's own crappy website that has a pretty much blank homepage and each tenet you can click on brings you to a page with a single quote and links to books you can buy on Amazon. You'd think they'd at least have essays. Maybe they're too busy being right wing hipsters :p

A recent discovery of mine. It has a degree of support from the Silicon Valley techno-libertarian movement actually. A very weird collection of people and ideas.

Sounds like my ideals if it were to get high on LSD and to rot in a cesspit of reactionary thought.

I'm on with the transhumanism bit. But everything else is disgusting.

Pretty much.

I'm personally more troubled by the people in Latin American countries who actually lived through military dictatorships and occasionally feel nostalgic about them (i.e., the always lovely "This shit didn't happen when Videla was in charge" crowd).

Also how would it be an enlightenment?

Besides "The Darkening" would have been a much better title :P.

It's terrible. All the Hoppean libertarians, neo-fascists, male supremacists, and other and crazies lurk around that part of the blogosphere and should be quarantined for the sake of everybody.

Source: read the fvcking manifesto. You can find it here: http://www.thedarkenlightenment.com/the ... nick-land/

If the mods are in disfavor, remove it, even though I think it's too nonsensical to be offensive.

Also, they totally misunderstand Hayek.

I have a feeling most people who support eugenics wouldn't agree to be chemically sterilized because the government told them to. Its all rooted in edginess and smugness. These are selfish people who are just arrogant enough to believe that, if society went back to flat-out survival of the fittest, they would be at the top of the heap. Even if they're right about being superior, their philosophy is still immoral. Joseph Stalin was an incredibly smart guy, but just because he was smart doesn't mean he was entitled to be a terrifying dictator.
