When do you think you will die, how old do you want to be?

Postby RobertBlakevsPiersMorgan » Sun Aug 31, 2014 8:01 pm

Based on your lifestyle and genetics, how old do you think you will live to be, and how old do you want to live?

I was pondering this question after reading about Andy Kaufman, whom I'm too young to remember. The guy, who apparently wasn't a smoker, died at just 35 of lung cancer. As awful as dying at 35 sounds, my dad was close to 60 when I was born, so I have been given a unique perspective on aging: namely that I don't want to experience it.

Looking into my family background, I'll probably live to be pretty old considering my active lifestyle and diet: none of my grandparents were healthy, yet only my maternal grandmother didn't live to see her 80s (she was a chain smoker). Personally, I want only the potential to live to be 100--and then die at about 55-65 in an accident. I don't know, maybe I'll change my tune when I hit that age. It's just that seeing my dad struggle with arthritis, being forced to scale back or give up entirely various physical hobbies, makes me wonder if life as an old man is really worth living. I know there's more to life than weightlifting or cycling and whatnot, but I'd probably have a lot less fun without them; plus there are a lot of dysfunctions which older men are known to face. Nowadays, people are living longer so 60 or so would be just on the precipice of being considered old.

There's a line in Blade Runner which goes, "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly." I don't want to die young or anything, but unless I managed to find some extraordinary luck physically, the idea of being old seems depressing.

I'll probably die in my thirties, with my luck. I don't know, I'd like to pull out making it to my seventies, but I just think I'll have a heart attack by then.

EDIT: Or, hopefully, our society will have invented the glorious ability to preserve brains and hook them up to computers to increase memory and all that jazz. Immortality, bitches!

My family is pretty unhealthy, physically and mentally. I'll probably fall prey to something or other by my thirties. Hopefully I'll make it into my sixties. Doubt I'd live past my seventies, and I wouldn't want to make it past ninety.

I would like to live until at least 70 or 80. However, do not forget that decades from now, healthcare will be much more advanced than it is now, so people would be living much longer lifespans.

I think living to 100 could be nice, but not if I was suffering through every day of it. It depends.

On a side note, the first line of my sig may shortly come in handy for reasons I shall not explain.

Well, with my family history of heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's, I doubt I will make it past fifty-five years, six months, and three days, twelve hours, sixteen minutes, and thirty-seven seconds old. Ideally, I used to think 110, but with the world going the way it is, I'm not sure if I really want that.

I don't tend to think about my death because it's made me have panic attacks before. I live a healthy lifestyle in a relatively affluent area and an receiving higher education. Those factors would make me statistically likely to have an extended life expectancy. However, I have a family history of cancer, have suffered from depression on multiple occasions in my life, may be pursuing a dangerous occupation, and I have a much higher chance of being murdered because I am transgender and pansexual. Those factors statistically are linked to a lower lifespan. I'm often consumed by anxiety, so I don't want to give an estimate. I honestly live in denial about my mortality, simply telling myself that life-extension technology will have improved later in my life and that I'll just use that to achieve biological immortality. Is it realistic? Hell no. Even if I somehow lived long enough to see biological immortality become possible and actually had the ability to obtain it, there are so many things in the universe that can kill me that it would be ridiculous to believe I could live forever. Shit, I'm starting to freak out. I'm going to stop typing this since I'm beginning to think of the implications of death and nothingness.
