BATTLE OF AL NAZA OR EXERCISE STRIKING SCIMITAR

Set in Derna - Cuscatlani arab Satelite state, town of Al-Naza was build for needs of Dernian Arab army on Al-Basr training ground, and remains there until this day. Now, this town will face the biggest military exercises in Simulation of urban warfare will be held inside this training ground, as two forces will face each other inside narrow alleys and mosques of the city.

Town if existed IRL would have had about 300 000 citizens, and whole area is about 10km2 big. ORBAT of attacking side will be bigger than ORBAT of defending side, because of preparations made by defensive side.

This exercise is to teach new Axis members art of war. Each fighting side will receive one advisor with some experience, who will not take part in RP, but advice and support the fighting sides.

List of things ~~attacking force~~ both sides need to consider:

1. Mission (+ commander's intent)
2. Available firepower (ORBAT)
3. Intel on enemy forces. (Their ORBAT)
4. Terrain (assuming this is 1:50,000, 1 grid square = 1 km, and North is where it's supposed to be).

Feel free to advice!

Now, every commander should do METT-TC analysis. Here is METT-TC for defending side (I am making it public so everybody knows how this works ).

Mission: Uphold the city and airport for 3 days, until reinforcements arrive. Inflict as many causalities on attackers as possible.
Enemy: Lack of specified data at the moment. Confirmed numerical advantage as well as heavy equipment and air support. Approaching from the south and south-west.
Troops:
(FAE soldiers): Regular Forces: who came to county to defend ally. Have access to heavy equipment and air support.
(Zataristani soldiers): Local Arab militia. Limited access to arms, but great knowledge of terrain and zeal.
Terrain:
Typical Arab city, buildings have joined walls and are usually 2-3 floors high. Swamps below the river on the south-west, everywhere else city is surrounded by desert. WARNING: light infantry formations can cross the swamps. Flank security advised.
Time: 3 IC Days and nights until reinforcements arrive. OOCly I will consult with Aeyariss when to state their arrival.
Civilians: 2/3 of the city have been evacuated, however there was not time and means to evacuate the rest. Civilians are still in the city, mostly in north-eastern districts which were unable to be evacuated.

AL-NAZA

MAP OVERVIEW:

The map above is a partial selection from the map of Al-Naza town, which is the Axis new AO with the scale of 1:50,000, (sheet number and date of publication is unknown or not available, and the entire map runs from the grid reference (GR) 01 to 08 for eastern grids, and 23 to 28 for northern grids.

The following colors are used in the maps; GREEN signify vegetations and plants, and in the AO, we can find the area covered by some degree of plants to the west of the AL-NAZA, here in GR of 0123 all the way to GR 0128. BROWN signify the line of communication in the area, and in the AO, the main line of communication is a single highway system that runs from the SOUTH WEST, across the city of AL-NAZA it self and to the EASTERN side of the town. Meanwhile secondary communication extends from the NORTH WESTERN of AL NAZA that connects to the NORTH of the town in GR 0228, another road linking NORTH of Al-NAZA at GR 0528, and a secondary high way system that runs from the NORTH EASTERN side (GR 0728) to the SOUTH EAST of the AO (GR 0824). BLUE signify a large body of water in the AO, and in this map, the EUPHRATE RIVER is the main body of water in the AO. BROWNISH GREEN, signify man made object in the map, and as we can see, it cover the entire town itself which possess 12 sub districts.

TERRAIN ANALYSIS:

In general, maneuver and movement in the AO will be easy for the defending force, as the single highway runs across throughout the town, and reinforcement can be committed from the NORTH side of the country. For the defender, movement is considered as a GOOD GO for foot soldiers and other light mechanized units, but expect the defender to slow the rate of advance by planting mines and other mixed obstacles.

But the same cannot be same for an attacking force advancing from the SOUTH, where the EUPHRATE RIVER will act as a natural obstacle course for a large advancing army, and considered as a SLOW GO for foot soldiers, and a NO GO for heavier unit such as tanks or mechanized unit that unable to snorkel through the river. The vegetation to the WEST of the town also present a threat to an advancing force coming from the SOUTH WEST area of the AO, which provide SLOW GO for the infantry and mechanized unit, as EN elements can find some cover and concealment to conduct harassment and ambush to the advance guard or main body. However, once cleared and secured, the invading forces can use the surrounding area to set up a fire base to support the assault into the town.

The two bridges in GR 0226 which are the only connection to the city from the SOUTH WESTERN side also poses a serious challenge to an invading army from the area. With about 200 meters in length, seizing and controlling both end of the bridges will be a daunting task, as the urban area in GR 0326 is the EN key terrain and will definitely be defended, and the chances that the enemy will attempt to delay advance by destroying both bridges are high. If the bridges are put out of commission, then it will be a NO GO for the invading army, until engineers can repair or replace the bridges.

However, advance from the SOUTH and SOUTH EAST will be easier compared to advance from the SOUTH WEST, if the main objective is to capture the town. The desert area to the SOUTH EAST provide good maneuverability for mechanized units, which can advance into the town using SOUTH EAST-NORTH WEST axis of advance, or spear heading into the SOUTH district of AL-NAZA using SOUTH-NORTH axis of advance, and is considered as GOOD GO.

The attacking force should however, seize the AIRPORT facility in GR 0723/0823 as it is one of the important vital ground that can assist in the war effort of the invading army. Air support elements can be stationed there, and a fire base for supporting artillery and other strategic rocket unit can be safely stationed in the vicinity.

The line of communication in NORTH are also considered as key terrain, as the enemy reinforcement can be deployed from the NORTH it is vital that the invading army either to secure the northern avenue of approach, by blockading the northern approach through ground elements or through the use of air cover. Any side who control the NORTHERN approaches is able to provide a GOOD GO for its troops reinforcement. If possible, the invading army should commit an advance guard to the NORTH EASTERN area of the AO, to intercept incoming reinforcement and to prevent the enemy from escaping, but this unit should stay well within the air cover and effective support weapon coverage.

The entire town of AL-NAZA is the single most important vital ground in the whole AO, however capturing it will not be easy. Success and failure will depend on the individual fighting skills of the invading and defending army in engaging in urban warfare. Movement will be a SLOW GO for the infantry, as every facility, building, structures must be clear of the enemy before the entire town can be capture and secured.

The bridges at GR 0226.
Urban area at GR 0326. (For killing area to stop invading forces coming from the bridges).
The river banks and vegetated area at GR 0224, 0225. (Can be used for staging area to conduct across the river assault).
The area of GR 0128, 0127 (Potential area for invading army staging area).
Air Port (GR 07/08-23)
Desert area GR 0724 (Potential area for mortar fire base).
Road (GR 0528) - Important line of communication for the defender.

Terrain analysis updated. Only, there's a few thing that can be stationed way outside of this AO map actually. Arty for example is normally stationed 6-8 miles from the front lines. Some MLRS can be stationed up to 20-30 miles away given their arsenal range.
