The Outbreak
On October 18, 2017 an unknown plague was released in the streets of New York City. It infected its victims in hours and when fully turned they had a hunger for human flesh. The initial contamination was around evening but by morning, reports of people attacking and eating each other or people rising from the dead were popping out in all five boroughs of New York City. The NYPD was scattered across all five boroughs and the military was called in to quarantine the city. What they didn't know was that the incident was appearing in cities across the United States and all over the world. On the day of October 19th reports were coming out of major world cities such as Tokyo, Moscow, Barcelona, Sydney, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and London.
L.A and NYC had 2 large military bunkers built under them by the military to test bioweapons and the lab in NYC suddenly went offline, but the Command Office near the entrance was transmitting still. So the military went in and extracted the "survivors" who were infected. The virus was still young and hadn't mutated yet so it took longer to fully infect, when they got to L.A they finally turned infecting the L.A base. The doors to the bunkers were opened in NYC since survivors were being moved to hospitals and NYC fell to the infection as the infection grew stronger. While in L.A, military scientists who were infected knew what was coming and tried to escape on planes going to all corners of the world. But they turned while on the planes and infected the entire plane.
But by then, NYC was full of zed and L.A was soon to succumb to the virus. Nobody noticed that the U.S military was locking down L.A like they were in NYC. When the situation had finally became uncontrolable, they nuked the cities hoping that they would kill the entire zed population, and destroy the labs. But that was the start. The planes that were carrying the infected scientists arrived in 8 Airports across the word, one on each continent. One in Rio De Janerio, Paris, Cairo, Beijing, Chicago, Perth, Moscow and London. This caused the virus to become unstable and uncontrolable in the unsuspecting cities and resulted in a major global outbreak of the virus.
Every attempt at confining or suppressing the virus failed. Humanity entered a dark age as the world was overrun by the undead. Many countries were able to repel the undead but there wasn't a single country that wasn't touched by the undead. China, India and Africa have the highest percentage of undead as compared to other world countries. The United States and Russia were some of the few countries that were defending their countries with the use of bombs and firearms. Cities such as San Francisco and Seattle were incinerated by the military in a futile attempt to stop the growing armies of the undead.
By dawn of October 20th, 2017 communications were lost from 80 cities in the States and as many as 250 worldwide. No one was counting how many towns and villages were overrun. T.V. and radio stations stopped broadcasting on October 21st, cell phones and computers were already dead by then. After that, there was no telling how bad things were. Big cities were the worst due to their big populations and those cities ended up being nuked because in the end there were already more infected than people. EMPs released from the nukes that the world's militaries used trying to hold back the dead killed electricity across the globe and within the first week 500,000,000 people had died or were killed in the nuclear bombs. Many countries are now unaware of what happened to other countries but most are still functioning and dealing with the zombie menace.
Before the undead attacked, there were about 7 billion people alive on planet Earth. No one was counting on how many cities, towns and villages were overrun. News reports claimed that more than 1 billion people died in the next two days after October 24th. By the time the internet went down on October 26th, the global death toll was at 3 billion and climbing. Many people across the world believed that more than 6 billion people died following the outbreak. The human population is now at 2.8 billion and 4 billion people died in the first month of the outbreak and the anniversary is called "Z-day" or "Day of the Undead". Zombies still pose a threat to humans with 2 billion of them active but they are still thriving in the wilds as no major city has reported a sighting in 2 weeks.
Earth's ecosystem is badly damaged. The atmosphere was contaminated from the pollutants and ash released by a historically unprecedented amount of fires, from the neglect of nuclear and chemical factories and warehouses, to the burning cities and refugee camps. It was estimated that the amount of particulates in the atmosphere would be comparable to the aftermath of a nuclear exchange by the United States and Russia. Parts of Earth were drastically cooled over the course of the war, with the most likely cause being the ash in the air and other pollutants, blocking out the heat of the sun. Many water sources are polluted and the ocean is still a haven for zombies, with an estimated 25 million zombies walking the ocean floor. Earth remains devastated and resource problems are common. High tech sailing ships have appeared on the scene and it appears that oil and other fossil fuels are rather scarce. The political map of the world changed over the course of the plague. The United States went from being the world's most dynamic and largest economic power pre-plague, to being one of the nations most severely damaged by the undead.

Welcome to the end of the world. The current year is 2030. The human population declined greatly after zombies ate half the population. All world events leading up to Z-Day remain the same. Your nation can be a present nation or it could have split up or merged with others. All nation populations dropped dramatically so don't have yours any greater than the present population of the nation or nations if yours annexed others.
