Animal Veganism?

Postby Arkhane » Tue Jul 29, 2014 8:46 pm

I'm not talking about natural herbivores, somewhere along the lines of cats and dogs. I have a pet named Soda, and he murders cabbages and such, though I don't know why.
I was thinking whether I should stop adding meat in his diet to cut costs in food and just turn him vegan. Though I'm not sure because I've read some articles that say its not good for omnivores, but others claim that there's nothing wrong with turning my pet vegan and its actually easier and better for his health..
Should I stop feeding him meat altogether, or stick to the regular meal.

I think this is something you should look up further, rather than asking us.

Oh no no no! Never turn cats and dogs into vegans! These animals have backgrounds in hunting other animals, and no matter what, they need meat in their diets

if you're worried about health problems, why don't you just feed him pet food? Pet food is designed to keep pets healthy.

That's because dogs tend to eat grass as a means of alleviating stomach pain and nausea, iirc.

It's also fit for human consumption, at least in the UK. Incase an infant finds the pet food.

I'm fine with the idea that people adhere to vegetarianism voluntarily. But mandating that a pet must follow is potentially harmful.

Cats and dogs aren't omnivores, they're carnivores that derive some nutrition from vegetable products.

If you cut out meat, unless it's some vegetarian petfood specifically made for your animal's species (and I don't know of any - all of the wet petfoods I know contain some meat, and most of the dry petfoods I assume do the same), you will kill them.

Yeah, she often eats it when she doesn't eat her kibble, just making the problem worse. She's so picky. :p

Cats can't live on a vegetarian diet period or they'll die.

Generally speaking, that's a really really bad idea. But you haven't told us what kind of animal it is.

That depends on the species of animal.

Dogs can thrive on a proper vegan diet, and rats can too if you give them enough copper from seeds, supplements or pellots.

Each species will have unique needs (sometimes the needs even change based on sex or age) so please research the right diet for your specific animal. If there is a safe vegan option then choose it :)

Cats on the other hand are a no go for veganism.

Just sell your pet away. That way you at least won't kill your pet.

Thank you for the suggestions
For those who ask, Soda is a no-breed dog ...

I am experiencing a financial crisis that may last for 2 years, the "vegan food for pets" sounds as expensive as meat, but since the majority of posters think that I remain to the original diet, I will keep doing it, I love Soda too much, I suppose I'll put cut the expenses on my food instead..

Anyhow, as a dog-owner, I can say. No, don't turn your dog vegan. It would the equivalent of abuse.
