Black Jesus 2: The Reckoning

Postby Skappola » Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:13 pm

Sadly, the title isn't the real name of the show.

So apparently a group of Christians are getting upset over a new Adult Swim show, known as "Black Jesus." Reportedly, this show depicts Jesus shouting expletives and smoking weed. After hearing of this show, Apostle David A Rodgers, pastor of the House of Prayer for All Nations in Chicago, is rallying fellow Christians around a boycott of Adult Swim. This was, of course, no problem for the church-goers, who would never watch the Satanist channel in the first place. :p

Just a few days after the Adult Swim network released the trailer for their new live comedy Black Jesus, Christian leaders are calling for the plug to be pulled on the show before it airs.

In writer and producer Aaron McGruder's new comedy series, the "Black Jesus" in question is played by Gerald "Slink" Johnson and lives in Compton, in California.

The blurb for the show describes him as a benevolent figure whose daily mission it is "to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers".

If that's all the show were about, Christians would probably not be up in arms about it, but this particular nice guy likes to drop a few expletives into his conversations and is apparently quite partial to a certain herb.

It's little wonder that his efforts to create a community garden and share the faith with the good people of Compton are not enough to assuage Christians who find the concept of the show less than funny.

Apostle David A Rodgers, pastor of the House of Prayer for All Nations in Chicago, is rallying Christians around his letter to the Adult Swim network.

He complains that "Black Jesus" is "utter foolishness and disrespectful" and that Christians should "work together to keep this show from being aired".

Rodgers is asking churches to copy the letter and circulate it in their congregations for signatures before sending it to the network.

It reads: "We, the Christian Community are vehemently opposed and violently offended at this upcoming program soon to air on your channel called Black Jesus. The level of disrespect aimed at the depiction of our Lord and Savior is inexcusable.

"We are hard pressed to find any value in this program, its message or its purpose. As a group of believers, we are prepared to launch a mass campaign and boycott of your channel and any advertisers that are financially profiting from this program.

"These continued attacks against our Christian values and the degrading imagery of the Lord Jesus Christ, will be met with social media awareness to the entire Christian Community and a targeted boycott of your advertisers.

"There is no way that this show would be aimed at the Jewish or Muslim community. We are demanding an immediate retraction of this show and a public apology to the Christian Community at large."

Here's the trailer:

You'll notice at 1:09 one of Jesus's friends says that the man isn't really Jesus, but merely thinks he's Jesus. If that was true, that would turn the show about Jesus yelling F-bombs into a show about a random psychopath yelling F-Bombs, which is significantly more enjoyable. However at another point, it shows the guy healing a man with his hands, pointing to the idea that he really is Jesus.

Regardless of whether he is or isn't, is this new show offensive? Should Adult Swim be running it? Personally, I'm split between being mildly offended and amazed that they managed to get this show on the air in the first place. This is almost worse than the Hitler sitcom.... Almost.

This, like most Adult Swim programs, is just purposely offensive trash.

Wow, you're fast. I was about to point out the flaw in the first part of your argument, but lucky for you, you deleted it just in time. Nice.

It sounds dumb, but idgaf about it being "blasphemous" or whatever. It just sounds like a shitty show. Like Othelos said, if you don't want to watch it, don't.

If they wish to boycott it, I see no problem with that.

They're certainly reacting to blasphemy better than the Middle East.

Then again, it might be an accurate portrayal of his skincolour.

Yes, it does. If we allowed censorship of one satire, it sets a precedent for another. Then it's a slippery slope towards suppressing freedom of expression or being able to criticise religion. What makes religion so special above all else from such things? You may consider it disrespectful, but satire so often is.

I don't know about you, but I would hate to live in a World where people couldn't poke fun at Religion, and hold mirrors to society.

The show sounds a bit brash for my tastes, but they're free to exercise their right to expression.

I believe there is a difference between sattire and "over-the-top mockery."

Once again, they aren't trying to get it legally banned. They're civilly sending a protest to the network, and planning to boycott.

How is this any different than any other group doing the same? Oh right, they usually aren't the majority.
