Chikungunya virus

Postby Rio Cana » Fri Jul 18, 2014 3:07 pm

The US territory of PR. health department has said that there have been over 250 people that have come down with Chikungunya. This virus is native to Africa. Seems a worker or tourist from Africa or that had visited Africa brought it back to the Americas. Supposedly, the first person to come down with Chikungunya was in that small tourist Caribbean island which is divided by France and the Netherlands. From there it has spread throughout the Caribbean.

At least 80% of the people on our island who have come down with it are from or around the Capital City. And news has come that already two people with Chikungunya have been found in Florida. Many people travel from our island to Florida. Illinois and New York which means the populations in those States better get ready for Chikungunya. It is reported that it will spread throughout the Americas.

Chikungunya is like dengue fever (there are four types of Dengue fever) but much more joint and muscular pain is involved. They say take no aspirins if you get it. People in the Americas have no immunity to Chikungunya. At least they say its survivable.

There is no vaccine for it or really expected at this time. What they say is true, diseases travel via airplanes or ships to other parts of the world.

For those in the US and or Latin America and the Caribbean, what precautions if any are your central, State or local governments taking. Here they are just warning the people not make sure water is not left outside for the mosquitos to breed. I think this could get bad in populated areas especially near parts of cities with abandoned buildings or homes. Great place for mosquitos to breed.

Article on it - http://news.yahoo.com/chikungunya-cases ... 33889.html

If Chikungunya can get to the Americas from Africa what about ebola . A few weeks ago they were saying that international groups needed more international help since they could not cope with the ebola outbreak in the Ivory Coast Republic.

I saw PR go into full mass hysteria over a few cases of A H1N1 back in 2009. Seems it's happening again and all I can do is roll my eyes. This is not the start of an epidemic. Just treat the cases if and when they happen. Don't alarm the population when there's no need. Gods.

Maybe this global warming thing is a threat after all if dengue can survive the lower 48 these days and not just the Everglades and Hawaii.

Well, on the bright-ish side of an otherwise unpleasant situation, the virus spreading into more affluent areas is probably the fastest way to get an effective treatment developed. Nothing quite dumps money and interest into curing a disease quite like it starting to affect First Worlders.

Sometimes I wonder if news corporations pay biolabs to make and spread viruses and diseases like this so that they can publish about them and make a shitloft of profit.

Yeah, I expected as much. It was the same with the A H1N1 scare. And they do the same witg hurricanes and tropical storms.

"It's imminent that the hurricane is going to hit us. Go to your supermarkets. Buy water!!!"

Aaaaaand then nothing happens. Yup. I've seen this happen so many times. Ugh.

They do say this could become a threat for Southern Europe.
And it seems it was first detected in Martinique. The first people who came down with it were two kids who had visited the french Caribbean island of Martinique. They took it back to France.

Dengue (that is similar to chikungunya) reminds a flu at first, so you don't take anything other than paracetamol when in case of fever or headache.

The headache is specifically strong below and behind the eyes and/or in an arch around your forehead.

My mom's gums got to bleed viciously because she took dipyrone, among other dangerous/scary symptoms.

Pro: Communism/anarchism, Indigenous rights, MOGAI stuff, bodily autonomy, disability rights, environmentalism
Meh: Animal rights, non-harmful religion/superstition, militant atheism, left-leaning reform of capitalism
Anti: Dyadic superstructure (sex-gender birth designation and hierarchy), positivism, conservatism, imperialism, Zionism, Orientalism, fascism, religious right, bending to reactionary concerns before freedom/common concern, fraudulent beliefs and ideologies

Formerly "Hetalian Indie Rio de Janeiro".

Compass: -10.00, -9.13
S-E Ideology: Demc. Socialist (92% ditto/Marxist, 75% Anarchist/Social democrat, 0% etc)
S-E school of thought: Communist (100% ditto, 96% Post-Keynesian)

Though this says I'm a social democrat, I'm largely a left communist.

You must be speaking about Haemorrhagic Dengue which is the worse out of the four dengues. Dengue is also called breakbone because at times it seems you are breaking your bone s.

This reads like one of those bad horror movie scenario's

"We've only got one vial of this virus, to make an antidote if it ever get's airborne..."
5 seconds later
"Oops, dropped it."

I've had chikungunya. My mother had dengue in our first month in Indonesia and she said it was awful.

Chikungunya is hell. Literally hell. A constant, inextinguishable fire burning all through your body. My room's AC was set to 18C and any time I moved on the bed, it was like I had doused myself in gasoline and lit a match. My fever registered at 41C at one point.

Couldn't even keep most liquids down for about four days, took a week before I could eat solid food, and it was twelve days before I could muster the strength to get out of bed. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
