Malaysian Airliner crashes in Ukraine

Postby L Ron Cupboard » Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:34 am

Unconfirmed reports that a Malaysian 777 airliner flying from the Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur has crashed near the border with Russia in the Ukraine. Confirmed by the Ukrainian Deputy Interior Minister. Apparently Malaysian Airlines have tweeted that they have lost contact with the aircraft.

Going off to look for sources.

BBC news is reporting that it may have been brought down by a ground to air missile, which I hope is not true.

It's on now! Just kidding. The Netherlands is complacent and Malaysia doesn't want to risk offending Russia.

Russian sources say that another Malaysian Airlines plane, a Boeing 777, has crashed near the Ukraine/Russia border. The cause of the crash is not known.

I cannot confirm yet if the route was Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and also it is too early to offer my speculation, but I am concerned that this may be a second tragedy to hit the troubled Malaysian Airlines: the plane from the other tragedy is yet to be found.

EXTRA: I can confirm via Malaysia Airlines that it was a Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

I didn't see anything about ground to air missiles. Chances are it's an unfortunate mechanical failure in a troubled area instead of a hostile attack by Russia or the Ukraine rebels.

Jeez, we can be a stupid country sometimes. They actually thought their own country was Ukraine? You'd think that we'd at least know where Russia is after the Cold War, but apparently no. Russia is also ukraine.

At some point we have to consider the possibility that God does not want Malaysians flying.

That is on the live BBC TV news channel. What worries me is the consequences if it was shot down by a missile.

I wonder how many non-Malaysians were on that flight. If it was from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpar, there would be a lot of Dutch and Malaysian people on that flight.

Have you considered that, in all likelihood, far more people have died in car crashes in the period between that last plane disappearing and this plane going down than died in those two incidents? Air travel is very safe. That's why it's such big news when there's a crash.

It has only been months after their earlier crash. This would surely go down in their safety ratings

I don't think it'd be funny at all if that was your national carrier.

I live in Singapore and the shock is really pretty great to me even if it isn't my national carrier. Anyone could really have been on the plane.

A sad and unfortunate accident. However we cannot speculate Russian or Ukrainian involvement until more information is present.
