The year is 1948, 50 years on from when everything changed.
Britain and France had been fighting over where their spheres of influence in Africa were for nearly 30 years. In 1898, things came to a head, and they fought each other in what was meant to be a fast war over the Upper Nile, near a village called Fashoda. However, with both sides looking for allies, the war soon embroiled much of the world.
France looked to its traditional allies. These were the United States of America, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Russia. Between them, their military strength was about 1 million. France allocated several thousand troops to the Fashoda region, but most stayed within the boundaries of the French Empire, waiting to repel any attack that came. The Russian war machine started to mobilise, but this took months to complete. The Benelux countries worked co-operatively, establishing a mutual defence pact.
Britain had to be more radical, as her own traditional allies had sided with France. She looked to two upstart empires, which were currently making names for themselves: Italy and Germany. Since the Berlin Conference of 1884, they had acquired land in Africa, with the Germans also receiving some land in the Pacific. These two new powerful empires would come in very handy against a French force still bitter from the events in 1870.
What became known as the Fashoda War went on for 4 years. In those years, the "Central Powers" of Britain, Germany and Italy made large gains, until on the 20th February 1902, the "Defence Pact" of France and her allies surrendered. A conference was called in Geneva, in the neutral Swiss Confederacy, and terms were created.
France got off considerably lightly in terms of territory, but her prestige was dealt a huge blow. The Germans took over the areas of Gabon and the French Congo, and several other territories were lost to the other two Central Powers. The Germans also gained Luxembourg, which had been annexed very early on in the war. Britain and Italy also made gains.
Since then there have been further major and minor conflicts, but it was in these years that the course of history was changed forever.

The RP
This RP is based on the premise that Britain joined the Central Powers in a war against France that could have easily happened in reality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashoda_Incident). You need to think about what would have happened to your country of choice in this event and make an application to join the RP. It would be appreciated if we can get Britain, Italy, the USA, Russia and Austria-Hungary very quickly. Would your country have collapsed into civil war? Would it have been gradually overtaken by Communism or Fascism? Which nations would it trade with? Is it not even affected at all by these events? All of this is yours to decide.

Population (Nation Estimate) 90,227,000
Population (Empire Estimate, if applicable) 20,753,400

Military Size: 1,800,000 full-time troops.
Military Branches: Imperial German Army, Imperial German Navy, Imperial German Air Service
Economy: Currently booming, as confidence was restored after the 1934 invasion of Belgium resulted in a German victory. The economy grew by 3% last year, as the empire reaches the high point of its industrialisation. Newly-acquired Flanders is especially booming due to the improved clay output there (increasing by 14% since 1934.) However, several of the African colonies are in a bad way, especially the cities, as a lack of infrastructure there prevents food from reaching them from the rural areas.
Infrastructure: Germany proper and Flanders as excellent infrastructure. Germany was untouched by the war, and Flanders' damage has been almost completely repaired. The demand for road space has led to the construction of 4 "autobahns," motorways with unlimited speed, with the routes Berlin-Munich, Berlin-Hamburg, Munich-Stuttgart and Dusseldorf-Bremen. The railways are also in good shape, but not very modern, with steam being the propulsion method of choice. There are also airports in several major cities, operated by Lufthansa. These are: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Leipzig, Essen, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Dar Es Salaam, Lome, Douala, Windhoek, Lae, Tsingtao
Brief History 1902-1948
1903: German military was cut down slightly, with about 900,000 troops in Germany proper and 200,000 in the colonies altogether.
1904-1908: German invasion and genocide of the Herero people. German losses: 676. Herero losses: 70,000.
1907: Election in Germany. Social Democrat Party lose half of their seats.
1913: Production of Ammonia fertiliser begins in Germany.
1917: Germany joins Border War between Mexico and the USA on the Mexican side. Puerto Rico is taken from the USA after a naval assault.
1918: Socialist uprising in Germany crushed by pro-Kaiser forces.
1919: Polish rebellion crushed at Battle of Konigsberg.
1920: Strike in Upper Silesian coal mines. Wages increase by 10% on average in the aftermath of the strike.
1923: Economic depression begins due to recent unrest and inflation rates of 50% in December.
1926: In March, the depression ends. Cologne hit by flooding. First German radio station, Deutschlander
1930: Economic reforms made in Germany, to encourage GDP growth.
1932: Unemployment rises to 12% after economic reforms fail.
1934: Desperate for a quick fix to economic troubles, Germany invades Belgium, occupying Flanders, which is rich in clay. That year, the depression ends.
1935: German economy grows by 3% this year.
1937: Bundesauto is formed, the first German car manufacturer.
1938: The Kaiser declares that the next 20 years will be geared completely towards economic growth. The 1st 5-year plan for German industry and agriculture begins.
1941: Kaiser Wilhelm II dies, and is succeeded by Wilhelm III, his eldest son.
1943: 1st 5-year plan ends. German growth in this period averaged 2%, with the industry sector growing by 8% in 1940.
1945: In the middle of the 2nd 5-year plan, Oskar Von Hindenburg, the chancellor, aborts it, as he investigates alternative methods of achieving growth.
1947: German development plan begins in the Pacific Islands.

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

Edit* I'd like to reserve Japan. If its OK I'd like them to have them take the opportunity to attack Russia (As in real life), and join the central powers. I haven't worked out where i'm going to go with this but i'm just researching everything right now.

Nation Name: The Empire Of Japan
Territory Claimed (Preferably a map): Japanese home isles basically, I'm no expert so any little islands that I didn't paint but are part of that region count. Plus the bit above that japan took from the Russians. Image
Population (Nation Estimate) 82 million
Head Of State: His Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito)
Head Of Government: General Hideki Tōjō
Government Type: Empire (Realistically a authoritarian military dictatorship possibly fascist)
Military Size: 6 million
Military Branches: Imperial Army, Imperial Navy , Imperial Air-force,
Economy: In good shape. Bans on unions and military discipline as well as Fukoku kyōhei give japan a unique advantage. The economy is however held in a strangle hold by the lack of raw materials and so expansion of the economy requires an expansion of access to these.
Infrastructure: Yet again on the mainland (All that's left of the empire) the infrastructure is in excellent shape. Increased during the 'golden era' damage from the brief civil war was was minimal and it was part of the military's economic plan to fix it up and increase it yet further.
Brief History 1902-1948

1898: Attacks Russia and newly American Philippines. Joins Central Powers, Russian Pacific Fleet caught in port.

1902: War ends in victory. Japan creates the 'Manchuria Protectorate' out of the territory from Russian Manchuria however the region coastal region of Primorye is annexed for Japan. The Philippines are likewise turned into a Japanese Protectorate.

1910: Japanese industry continues to modernize. Japan, fueled by its now respectable empire, is becoming an economic power house however issues in overseas territory's are steadily getting more extreme. The response to these is almost unilaterally a brutal crackdown. Korea and Taiwan are integrated into Japan's national territory.

1915: Japanese economic boom shows no sign of stopping. Trade is skyrocketing. The state expands in almost all sectors. Fukoku kyōhei is working. Now commanding a vast merchant navy with stability restored to the colonies through repression the Japanese authorities look outwards yet again. Beginning of a military build up.

1917:The Japanese Emperor sends an ultimatum to china. They are to surrender the rest of the Manchuria to the Japanese protectorate. The ultimatum was refused and so the second sino-japanise war begins.

1918: Second Sino-Japanise war ends. Crushing Japanese victory. The empire celebrates. However resistance to Japanese rule has restarted in Korea and the Philippines. The war was not good for trade and internationally condemned.

1922: Economic growth is slowing. The policy of brutality is inciting uprisings in the Philippines against the puppet government.

1924: Those on the Japanese mainland are feeling hardship for the first time since the great war, faith in the government is falling. Some are calling it the beginning of a depression. While at the same time Japanese marines are being used to put down a massive peasant revolt in the Philippines. Dissent is rising across the empire.

1926: A guerrilla war is now raging across the Philippines. Islamic 'freedom fighters' and various revolutionary groups attack from nowhere and melt into invisibility inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese Expeditionary force. The Japanese industrial machine is now turning against itself. Workers are joining to form new massive unions across the empire.

1928: The situation in the Philippines is getting worse. There is no pretense at a colonial government now, just brutal violent military rule. Any kindness that once lingered in the occupiers has been beaten out by the dehumanizing effects of such a war. A massive strike in Seoul is finally put down by the rifle butts of the garrison. Across the empire, not just overseas, but on the Japanese mainland the depression is getting worse, and workers are getting angry. Various communist organisations are emerging.

1930: Nationalists and socialists battle in the streets. The government cracks down on unions and known communists sparking mass riots in the mainland. The protectorate of Manchuria is stable, the government there is given more autonomous powers. Korea and Taiwan are facing the same problems as the mainland. Occupation of Philippines has no popular support. The Emperor refuses to allow a withdrawal.

1932: Hundreds of communist leaders are rounded up and shot in Tokyo. Fearing the same communists in the port of Vladivostok rise up. The navy stationed there mutiny and together they overthrow the Garrison. Its a spark that resonates across the empire. In Korea and Taiwan Communists and Freedom fighters join forces. At the same time the mainland is plunged into chaos. Unions call a general strike, while the Emperor calls for a state of emergency. Communists are rioting and calls for revolution are not uncommon. A rouge General marches on Tokyo to 'reclaim the situation'. The emperor panics, he arms the communists. The generals army arrives and Toyko is plunged into war.

1933: The army has taken power. The communists now fight a guerrilla war in the Korean country. Taiwan is controlled by freedom fighters and has declared independence, as has the state of Manchuria. On the mainland the communists were crushed after a bloody battle for Tokyo and then for three months as the rest of Japan was militarily 'calmed'. Marshal law is in effect, communists are hunted down and executed and the government was disbanded. Economic reforms are to be implemented, the emperor remains in power only in name.

1935: Marshal law has been lifted though the military remain in power. Withdrawal from the Philippines has been completed. Many hardened veterans return and with the internal situation somewhat stabilized eyes have been turning to Korea now in a state of civil war between the communists and the other freedom groups.

1938: The depression has finally ended. The emperor has died and been replaced by his son. Still powerless he is a puppet of the military. The Japanese army has launched an invasion of mainland Korea. However after months of fighting and mass casualties with very little progress the Japanese military machine withdrew. Fukoku kyōhei is being pushed again, japan needs to rebuild its power.

1943: Japan is building up again. Factory's, ships and guns are being built. The economy is in another boom. However the Military government is still in an isolationist phase after the destruction of the empire and the humiliation of the Korean invasion.

1945: The military is in build up. The Japanese military government is pushing Nationalism, the political landscape is changing. However isolationism is still the strongest policy. With military discipline the economy is running smoothly. In fact the whole country is almost the opposite it was just 13 years ago. This is enforced with authoritarianism.

1948: The present day. Alot has changed in the last 50 years. However the military government is slowly abandoning its policy of isolationism. And eyes have fallen over the former empire. Japan has recovered. Its army and navy are stronger than ever backed by an indoctrinated population and a huge industrial base. Japan cannot survive without the raw materials it relys upon. That's why the empire was founded. That's why it must be required.

Historically Belgium was an ally of Britain, not France. It was the UK's influence that secured Belgium's independence from the Netherlands. The Treaty of London (1839), which the UK was hugely influential in organizing, secured Belgium's independence and neutrality. In fact, the United Kingdom entered the First World War not because of it's alliance with France and Russia. The German Schlieffen Plan was to bypass French defenses on the border by marching through Belgium. The UK joined the war when Germany attacked Belgium.

So basically, if you want to be accurate up until the POD, I'd say Belgium either kept out of the war completely or was drawn in on the side of the central powers.

EDIT: Furthermore, I have doubts about the Dutch or Americans taking part in the war. The Dutch stayed neutral in this time period right up until the Nazis knocked on the doors, and the US was kinda withdrawing into itself in a fit of isolationism, twice broken only because of multiple serious factors drawing them into the wars. Still, the US could be explained by saying they were drawn in on the French side by a Lusitania style incident, maybe a Zimmerman Telegram sort've dealio. The Dutch are harder to explain, perhaps a heavy dose of handwavium.

*Shrug*, my two cents. Hope I don't come off as rude. :P

The US didn't lose the Mexican War, and if it's alright with OP, I'd prefer for the US to have joined Central or Stay out. The US had much better relations with Germany than France at that point in time for a short while.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Senkaku » Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:36 am

Nation Name: the Chinese Republican Federation
Territory Claimed (Preferably a map): Qing China
Population (Nation Estimate): ~500,000,000
Population (Empire Estimate, if applicable): ~502,000,000
Head Of State: Chancellor Ren Lin
Head Of Government: First Minister Shen Daiyan
Government Type: Parliamentary democracy
Military Size: At present, the standing Federation Armed Forces number around 2.0 million active personnel, with around 8.0 million reserve soldiers and around 150 million men being eligible for drafting.
Military Branches: Army of the Federation, Federation Air Force, Federation Navy
Economy: largely agrarian, but some major cities have developed industries
Infrastructure: Old road systems, primitive rail infrastructure, some telegram and telephone lines, some radio towers, a few airports
Brief History 1902-1948:
In 1908, the Guangxu Emperor, with popular support, launches a coup against Dowager Empress Cixi. It fails, and both Cixi and him are killed in the aftermath. The chaos that followed in the last days of 1908 in China is still unprecedented in history. The remainder of the imperial family began fighting over the regency for two-year-old Puyi, and rebellions broke out throughout the disintegrating empire. Yuan Shikai, commander of the Beiyang Army, was poisoned by a rebel assassin, and a group of peasant rebels from the surrounding countryside stormed Beijing. Puyi and the court fled to Tianjin. The boy emperor abdicated and was whisked away to Japan, while many in the Qing court either fled abroad, joined a rebel faction, or committed suicide. Years later, in 1919, Puyi would be assassinated by a still-uncaptured assassin likely hired by a rebel faction.
Within a few months, several major new power blocs emerge. The most powerful is the Port Cities Clique, which consists of many major southern cities like Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Shantou, and Shenzhen. Their main rival is the Yellow River Clique, which dominates much of the North China Plain. Smaller blocs form in Liaoning, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Mongolia. Fighting and stalemate ensues.
In 1917, the Japanese invade Manchuria and Taiwan. Taiwan, which had become a bastion for Qing supporters and exiled nobles, and has become home to the Late Qing Dynasty, falls quickly, and the Liaoning warlord bloc puts up very little resistance to the invaders. Following the "peace" that the Japanese declare, essentially unilaterally in the face of an utter lack of official governments, the Yellow River Clique, now China's border, becomes uneasy. The big northern bloc begins fracturing apart, and the southern bloc presses the advantage. The Yellow River Clique breaks up in late 1918, and the Port Cities Clique seizes much of its land. Many Yellow River Clique warlords switch sides. In 1918, a new bloc also appears- the Central Group, consisting of Chengdu, Kunming, Guiyang, Xi'an, and Lanzhou, and some of the surrounding areas. They absorb much of the remnants of the Yellow River Clique and the new Kingdom of Tibet.
Despite the rise of these regional powers, though, China remains firmly in the grip of warlords. The bizarre neo-feudal system under which the blocs operate still allows for infighting and secession, and so despite their power, they are also structurally very weak.
Following a battle near Guilin in 1920, the Central Group and the Port Cities Clique enter negotiations for structural integration and the foundation of an actual government. In 1921, the Chinese Republican Federation is announced. It is, essentially, a federation of the thousands of warlord fiefs that make up the two big blocs, with the exception that their people are now allowed some democratic rights. Many warlords rig elections so that they always win a seat in the Golden Hall, China's new parliament, but many others are happy to see the rise of a new government and allow their fief democracy.
Meanwhile, the new Army of the Federation, along with the Air Force (a small and rather pathetic force), marches into Xinjiang and Tibet in 1922. The Western Wars, as they are known, drag on for ten years, until all of the west that was once controlled by Qing China has been reconquered. Then eyes turn north. The Mongolian bloc, hoping to keep some of its wealth and power, peacefully joins the Federation in late 1932.
As Japan disintegrates and Taiwan and Manchuria become independent, the Federation seizes the opportunity to reconquer the lost territories. Manchuria breaks up quickly in the face of the battle-hardened armies of the south and west, surrendering in late 1933 and being integrated, but Taiwan is more difficult. The seaborne invasion, largely using pressed merchant ships and fishing junks, largely sailed by civilian sailors, takes a heavier toll. Despite the losses, though, Taiwan, too, surrenders, in 1934, after a year of bloody fighting, and is integrated.

In 1935, a new China, reunified by years of bloody war, rises triumphant from the ashes of the fall of Qing. The new nation continues slow democratization, as old warlords die and their districts become free to elect whom they choose. Some districts remain hereditary, though, and China's new aristocracy, the wealthy and the high-placed, have a great deal of influence in the government. The Federation begins infrastructure programs, building up China's small industrial base, acquiring modern military equipment, and improving communications and transportation. These reconstruction, industry, and rearmament programs continue to this day, as China rises into a glorious future. China has been at peace since 1934, and is determined to keep her people safe.

Accepted.
And by the way, USA guy, making the USA on the side of the Central Powers would create really difficult problems to solve for the existing timeline. So, if it's alright with you, could you edit your app so that America is on France's side in the Fashoda War? Thanks.
