Religion in Walosia

Today, religion is something private and on its way out of the Walosian society, but in the ancient times, religion played a huge part of everyone’s life and daily routine. The footprint of the ancient religions in Walosia is still visible. Quite a few cities, towns and even districts have been named after religious gods and goddess´s. A short list will be presented at the end of this post.

The religions that have gotten the most influence are both the Religio Romana and Christianity. Religio Romana was the mainstream religion in Walosia over many decades and is still the largest religion today with 6% of the population say they either practice the religion or just believe. Christianity comes at a close second with 5% of the population. In the late 500AD, as many as 79% of the population was directly involved with Religio Romana however, when Empress Victoria I was overthrown, the same number had gone down to a bare 12%.

Today, Walosia is considered a secular and atheistic society with a clear separation between church and state, which was separated in 900AD. However, most Walosian respect religious people and Walosia have complete freedom of religion, but with some limitation on how to exercise their religion, for instance human sacrifice became prohibited in early 600AD and animal sacrifice became prohibited in late 14th century. These decisions hit Religio Romana supporters quite hard, as the religion was known for sacrifice. Today, worshippers of Religio Romana has put their sacrifice history behind them and gone over to traditional mass and church service.

Other religions have seen their golden age in the Walosian history books, religions like the Hellenistic religion, Norse Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, Buddhism and Judaism is still being practiced today. The largest one being the Hellenistic religion. Walosia has numerous religious sites concerning almost all the major religions, some small and some a lot larger. Most of these temples and churches are still being used today for mass and prayers but some are to old to work properly.

Religious statistics:
Secular/Atheist/Agnostic = 87%
Religio Romana = 6%
Christianity = 5%
Hellenism (Hellenistic Religion) = 1%
Other = 1%

List of districts, cities or towns with names from religious gods:

Districts:
Apollonia (after the Greek God Apollo)
Fortunia (after the roman God Fortuna)
Christiania (after Jesus Christ)

Cities and towns:
Lokem (after the Norse God Loke)
Saturna (After the Roman God Saturn)
Amora (After the Greek God Amor)
Bacchu (After the Roman God Bacchus)

CANON UPDATE (OOC):
I have given this a lot of thought and I have decided to do some major changes to the Walosian History Canon.

The largest change that I will be doing is the removal of the “Walosian-Khelsharian War of 2009” and the following abdication of Empress Liat as well as the removal of the character Liat completely. The reason why is because I have developed my nation into a more realistic fashion during the 2014-2015 era and after reviewing older post I see that the war and abdication of Liat is both unrealistic, doesn’t fit with the overall nation and is simply unprofessional.

Vasatra, because of several serious scandals involving religious organizations, has formally declared that religiious groups have no rights not enjoyed by any other voluntary group. Marriage is strictly a civil concern; clergy can bless or not any valid civil marriage. Chuch ceremonies have no legal standing.

Religion is viewed negatively by the Government and most of the population. 2/3rds of the masses regard themselves as atheist, and half of those left as agnostic. The remained are mainly Orthodox Christians and small groups of Hinduists, Muslims and Judaists.

Religion is supported as a way to support the Word of our Nation: ''For the one and only, true Emperor and Empire!''

Thus spoken this, assimilation itself is not used as in Iran. No, it goes much more sneakily and smoother..
Using the strong force of immigration laws, we slowly unified our nation under one religion.

Current data about Religion in Herargon:

72% Etalìonicism (a religion which is distantly related to the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. It has the liturgy and arts and pope of the Roman Catholic church, but originated from an mix of Eastern Orthodox and Hellenism, and marrying is tolerated, having children too. But they may not take act in public ceremonies, and a royal family is forbidden. People worship the Emperor and the Pope is the subject of the emperor.)
11% Roman Catholic
9% Eastern Orthodox
4% Other
4% Atheist

It's nearly a pre-requisition to be quite religious, as this can affect work relations, and so on.
Especially Etalìonicism is a pre-requisite, since everyone has to worship the Emperor. If you don't you get arrested, that's why.

We have been a secular state since the 1870s, when Prime Minister Ahmet Çelebi introduced secularization reforms.

Most people are:

Muslim (75%)
Christian (20%)
Jewish (5%)
Zoroastrian (3%)
Atheist/Agnostic/Deist, etc. (1%)
Other (1%)

Despite around 99% of the population being believers, only 16% of the population is religious.

There are thousands of religions and religious movements within the Terran Empire, simply on account of its size.
Religious institutions are left mostly free, but the government harshly suppresses ideas such as male superiority, and claiming to be "the one true belief".

While religion plays an important role in large parts of Terran society, and our views on life, the universe, and everything; religion is strictly banned from politics.
(Plenty of atheists too, though full-blown anti-theism is also banned.)

It isn't tolerated in Kapilana, because 12 years after our nation was founded, a raving desert lunatic proclaiming himself a prophet tried to wrest power by uttering nonsense about one truly invisible god. We crushed him and destroyed his race.

Hyperborea was partly founded as an escape from Religion, thus it is not unexpected that the government takes a militantly secular stance on the topic, Religious citizens are harassed or outright exiled and those caught proselytising are usually found lynched from streetlamps.

Of course Religion has not been wholly eliminated, in the migrant communities and even among some citizens religion thrives in secret, smugglers have made a fortune from trafficking icons and missionaries into the Island.

A large chunk of the German populace is religious with over a half being Christian, Protestantism and Catholicism being the two dominant sects (the former is predominant in the north while the latter is predominant in the south). The second largest religious group is Islam, with over 2 million adherents, followed by Judaism with 550,000 adherents, and Buddhism with over 200,000. Minor religions include Hinduism, Sikhism, and various other religious groups. The non-religious sect comprises only 12% of the overall population.

The state religion of Ireland is the Celtic Catholic Church. While the CCC is a branch of the Roman Catholic Church, it maintains its own traditions. Most notably, power is concentrated in monasteries rather than churches. The head of the CCC is the Grand Abbot of Armagh, who also sits on the Lords' Council.

Ireland has historically tolerated religious minorities, but for many years membership in the CCC was required for holding political office. In most jurisdictions, this requirement has been removed, but members of the Common Assembly must still be members. This issue came to the fore recently with the assassination of High Lord Patrick O'Hara of Sligo. An advocate of religious tolerance, High Lord Sligo was succeeded by his daughter, Miriam O'Hara, a Jew.

Officially Albion and Caledonia is a secular polity, and even unofficially religion has no political clout. Religion is regarded as a private affair, which should play no part in the wider scheme of a political state that comprises multiple systems of belief.

The monarch who is the head of state of the United Kingdoms was once head of the Caledonian Free Church, but the title was rejected by King Stephen I in 1942 CE, and the royal family maintains a policy of non-interference in religious affairs.

There are, nationally, no recognized religious festivals (such as Christmas, etc). A person can apply to take a religious festival off as unpaid (some employers still pay) leave.

As of the most recent census, current religious beliefs that are actively practiced within the UK (major ones) are:
- Buddhism: 8,332,000 (10.62% of population)
- Christianity: 5,963,000 (7.6% of population; Includes all forms)
- Hinduism: 680,000 persons (0.87% of the population)
- Sikhism: 144,700 persons (0.18% of the population)
- Islam: 134,200 persons (0.17% of the population)
- Other monotheistic beliefs: 276,200 (0.35% of the population)
- Other polytheistic beliefs: 732,300 (0.93% of the population)

The remaining population (79.28%) includes mostly Secular Humanists, Atheists, and/or Agnostics.
