Jesus...had a wife?

Postby Slarvainian » Thu Apr 17, 2014 5:38 pm

Maybe some of you will remember from a few years ago when a ancient Egyptian piece of papyrus was found and when deciphered said Jesus, had a wife. Well there's been a little bit of an update and this piece of papyrus has been verified as real and is dated to about when the original biblical gospels were written.

Source:http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/jesus-had-a-wife-say-scientists-as-ancient-papyrus-scroll-verified-9255110.html

I, personally never know what to what is actually true about all these gospels written around this time. Some being put into the bible, others cast away as fake. All of this decided of course by man on what was real and what was a false gospel.

Your thoughts NS?

I read about this, and found it very interesting. I'm an atheist, but I find Early Christianity very interesting.

This was obviously a work of early Christian communities, and it might be untrue, but I find it interesting nonetheless. We don't know many concrete facts about Jesus, all we can historically say about him is that he probably existed, was a preacher, and that he died. The gospels, iirc, don't mention Jesus not having a wife, or having a wife, so if he existed, which I find likely, he could have had a wife.

Other early Christian communities also mentioned a possible brother of Jesus.

Every man should have had a husband, every woman a wife. They'd all be ecstatically happy if they did.

Are we talking about Jesus of Nazareth here? Because that was a pretty common name back then.

He did not.

Jesus did not get married. In John 2 at the wedding of Cana Jesus was invited (John 2:2). You aren’t invited to your own wedding. Also, Jesus knew that he was going to be crucified (Matt. 20:18-19). He would not have married a woman knowing he would not be able to provide for her later. Also, the Lamb, who is Jesus, will attend the wedding feast as the bridegroom later (Rev. 19:7; 21:9). So, we could say he will be “married” in the future.
