LONGSWORD: A SIEGE AT SEA (OOC/Interest??)

Postby Registug » Wed Apr 16, 2014 8:34 am

The nuclear apocalypse has come and gone. The world order has collapsed, and anarchy and chaos reigns among the survivors. Somewhere in the ocean of the multiverse, the last Longsword sails the ocean, looking for a safe place where the survivors can disembark and leave the war behind. They haven't been forgotten, though, and pursuing them through the epic seas are their old enemies, the last of the fleet of a nation that is now long lost. They seek revenge on the Longsword, which was responsible for the loss of many ships and friends.

Now these two forces will meet, just off friendly shores.

An epic about love, loss and the human condition. Also boats blowing up with Michael Bay tier explosions and claustrophobic corridor fighting between two desperate forces.

So yeah, this is an RP idea I came up with when someone asked the question "How could I take the Longsword intact?" on the NS MilReal thread. The answer? Siege Warfare. So I felt like making this little RP scenario to explore combat on a 1200m long super ship.

Both sides will be depleted of ammunition, supplies, manpower and morale. At best, there'll be an opening salvo from both sides, but not enough to cripple either force. It'll all come down to a boarding action. The opposing force has the numbers, the Longsword has... well, a 1200m long super ship.

Anyway, as far as characters and whatever, which have been big questions already, I think that this should be the standard style, with each player controlling a group of characters. Since there seems to be more than one person already interested so far, I'm going to be splitting the factions into smaller groups. For the Opposing Force, it'll be split down into particular ships. For the Longsword, I reckon it would be particular sections; bridge crew, engineering, anti-boarders, reactor room, etc. Character amount should probably be kept down to a minimum, with a few core characters and their satellite and supporting characters.

Anyone who wants to join who hasn't already discussed the idea with me, I want people who know their shit. If you don't really know your shit but you are still interested in joining up, then I suggest heading over to the NS Military Realism Thread where you can learn your shit. Regardless, I'll have final say on who joins and what goes. You'll have to convince me that you're good enough to get in on this.

We want to keep this fairly reasonable and realistic. We're here to write an interesting and compelling story. One side shouldn't be aiming to win.

With that, let's open this up and start discussing. I want to point this in a specific direction before we actually start writing, so we don't all start tripping over each other later down the line.

Eyyup.

This is not
A tag, I mean
God, who would do such a thing?

Not sure who I'd like to be, some pirate crew probably, just because I don't want to care too much about tactical realism atm.

EDIT: Sorry, not pirate. Enemy fleet, it was someone else who brought up the use of pirates. Too bad, I can't have people being piratical and silly. D:

My quest to capture a Longsword has spawned a post-apocalyptic sea epic with pirates and Medieval style seige warfare. That is awesome.

Funnily enough, my Navy maintains a stockpile of WWII and earlier era vessels for those times when the fan is vaporized in a nuclear fireball before the crap can even hit it. I've been wanting an excuse to use one of my semi-updated Gearing-class destroyers.

Though a Littoral Combat Ship might be a better fit for a boarding operation, since it can carry helicopters and a small Marine detachment as a mission crew. And a smaller crew means there's fewer people I have to keep track of.

I want to be my own fleet of hyper nationalistic battleships who want to kill just about everyone near them and their cargo cultist supply ships who have become the priest/merchants of society and the battleships are the warrior/slavers.

I'd like to play as the Nuclear Operators. Sort of my specialty.
Or actually really, really my specialty. As in actual job IRL.
I will knowledge-duel anyone for this position if it comes to that. Come at me, bro.

Seeing as the Longsword has eight reactors and by modern standards should have roughly 800-1,600 nuclear operators, it'd easily be done as two people in charge of them; you can have a Forward and Aft Reactor Officer and split Reactor Department up into two sections.

Okay, so, uh, I'm gonna have to say "probably not" for these cult ideas and everything. We're not that far into the apocalypse yet; no more than two years in, at least.

Anyways, I have created and thought of some decent roles to be filled in each team.
Longsword:
Command - Basically in command of the ship and its actions
Engine room - R&C wants this
Reactor room - Phartan the smartan
Anti-boarding ops
Missile ops
RADAR ops
Canteen???/support I guess
Hospital/medical
other shit

Enemy force gets a little more freedom in what they get to play. As Mitheldalond said, he wanted to play an LHD contingent.
Since this was all originally Mithel's idea, I reckon that the "Enemy Force" should be Mitheldalondian in nationality, and maybe one or two other nationalities as part of a coalition against the Longsword.
Oh and preferably should keep it to one or two ships

Anyways, a list of the Enemy Force
I wanted to play a crippled carrier as a command force; the fore deck has been hit by missiles, which destroyed the main catapults and thus the carrier can't launch main aircraft. Helicopters, though. Anyway, the carrier will act as the main command vessel for the Enemy Force.

Actually, I'd be interested in playing the Naval Police/Regulators/Service Police unit on the Longsword. Trying desperately to make sure people stick to military regulations, rules of war etc. and becoming less and less popular as the situation goes further down the shitter.

Uh, I meant an LCS, not an LHD.

Like this:

Though I could do an LHD if you'd like, or pretty much anything else really. Including wooden hulled ships of the line, WWII carriers complete with vintage air wing, or almost anything in between.

Although I don't post often I have been following the Modern Military Realism Thread #5 since it was founded (It is helpful to look at for the continual attempt to correct my own ignorant work on creating my own military a while back), and read over the last #4 thread significantly. There was a great deal of interest from me at the creation of an actual RP thread involving some of the members on the thread, who have been invaluable assets for learning additional advice from through passive reading. I would be rather happy to be part of the Siege of the Longsword, since it would be both fun from an RP standpoint - something that I haven't done much of recently - and rather enlightening to see some of the tactics used in the initial naval battle from the view of NS conflicts, albeit rather irregular given the depleted ammunition.

I understand of course if you don't want me to take me on on one of the sides, since my actual experience with naval battles in an RP sense, or any type of conflict on NS, is at best limited, but if you so are willing to allow me to be part of the eventual IC I would like to be in a relatively minor role in the fleet that is engaging the Longsword. In such a role my influence would not be of extreme importance to the ultimate battle but would at the same time be of valuable experience, and could potentially provide some minor entertainment for other members and addition to the utility of the storyline. Perhaps my position could be filled with command of a frigate that is intended for anti-air warfare roles and the escort of larger units of naval action. If this is not amenable to your plans I would be quite willing to take another position. Thanks for reading this and potentially considering me.
Just pretend this is a signature or whatnot.
