How popular is coffee in your nation?

Postby The Unified Ojibwe » Tue Apr 08, 2014 11:38 am

Within the confederation, coffee has established itself as a universally important part of everyday life. In any municipality, you can find coffeehouses dotting the streets and acting as gathering places for the residents therein.

Is coffee popular in your nation? If so, what place does it hold in your culture?

People don't like being intoxicated in my nation, so coffee is not very popular.

Coffee-drinking is just about nonexistant in Nekronia, and the substance is highly restricted and controlled. The substance is frowned upon by the populace, as it is viewed as something that makes you dependent in the long-run and is not a good idea in general. Basically, it's viewed like a drug.
Foreign individuals such as diplomats are permitted to drink it freely, however.

Coffee is very popular in Nordepax but usually it's reserved for the wealthy or very special occasions. It costs a lot to ship it from Central America to here.

The upper class and middle class drink it, but not the lower class due to coffee being very expensive to import.

Only in the shore towns besieged by tourists and in the capital, elsewhere it's just something people usually have in their cupboards and drink once in a blue moon.
The climate doesn't suit coffee consumption, and coffee doesn't seem to want to grow this far south either, so it's really just something people buy to feel fancy, like Lichi fruit and Japanese pornography.

Coffee is used more often than tea as a source of caffeine, and is often regarded as one of the most popular drinks in Polkopia. Several local flavors of coffee exist in Polkopia, making it one of our chief exports as well.

Coffee is very unpopular in Eternus Gaudium. The people don't believe in using any form of caffeine, for they have so much energy already, and don't ever want their energy to require a drink. Also, caffeine made many of those living in Eternus Gaudium get crazy, and everyone is required to be at peace within our nation. Disturbing that is not okay, and we have found that coffee puts our peace at risk.

Coffee is very popular indeed in Avaerilon, and has been for a very long time.

The first records of coffee are from old Chimeri sources going back to around the year 3000 BC. A carving depicts the Daedric goddess Azura presenting coffee beans to a group of worshippers, and then the worshippers nurturing the shrub which grew. Writings with it are vague, but indicate coffee held medicinal purposes in Chimeric society, and was not roasted, ground and made into a drink like it is today. Coffee is native to Morrowind, and is found from southern Vvardenfell to the Tear region, now cultivated in farms, though wild plants are also plentiful. The Dunmer kept using coffee through the ascent of the Tribunal after the War of the First Council in 1398 BC, though did not trade it until Morrowind was conquered by Cyrodiil in 927 BC. The Imperial merchants found little favour for it among their clientele as a medicine, and coffee might not have come to be drunk were it not for an alchemic experiment. The alchemist Abrys Delruminivi was attempting to extract certain elixirs from various plants, and to do so roasted dried coffee beans. Intrigued by the aroma, he attempted to eat one, but found it too bitter. However, he recognised that the flavour could be likable if diluted, and proceeded to grind the beans and then combine with hot water. And thus coffee came to Avaerilon.

Today, coffee is drunk often in the morning before breakfast, and then usually again around 11 AM. It is also due decorum to have a coffee course after or with dessert at formal meals, before the brandy. Avaerilonians buy fresh, ground coffee more than any other kind, though whole roasted beans are still popular and freeze-dried coffee is not hugely uncommon (though not that popular). The favoured roast kinds are French, Italian and Avaerilonian (of a darkness between French and Italian, with certain woods being involved in the process), and the prime bean among growers is the Llovyn. Coffee houses are popular and found in towns and cities across the country, catering to an intellectual, sophisticated clientele.
