New feature: Polls!

Postby [violet] » Fri Jan 03, 2014 8:57 pm

As will be announced shortly on the News page, regions can now run polls. If you are a Founder or Delegate, you can run one by using the control at the bottom of your Region Control page.

Best idea yet! Thanks for all your work on making this game better admins and mods!

Can you have multiple polls going at once? For example: one for a WA Delegate and one for a Minister of Defense?

The poll description on regional pages says that "votes are public". Does this mean I can view the individual votes of each nation? If so, where?
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Only by viewing a particular poll and clicking the "Voters" tab. You can't get a list of polls that a given nation has ever voted in (except for your own nation, which you can access by clicking "<My> Polls" here).

Thanks, I see it now.

Next comment: Can there be a requirement that forces 1 vote per unique player? Otherwise these polls are open to vote stuffing, and restricting it to WA only is lame.

Edit: Also votes are public...does that imply in the future, private polls are possible?

They have a hard enough time enforcing 1 WA nation per unique player, I don't imagine they are prepared to enforce it for polls.

It would be amazing if we could supply an explicit list of nations to allow to vote in a poll, however.

What if there were a setting to make it open only to WA members and one to make it open to any nation in your region, plus other customizable settings?

That appears to already have been implemented.

Voter Eligibility wrote:Select who is eligible to vote. Nations must meet all of the selected criteria to be eligible. Votes from nations that become ineligible between voting and the close of the poll are discarded.

Residents: Nations in the region.

Natives: Nations that possess more Regional Influence here than in any other region.

WA Members: Members of the World Assembly.

Large Nations: Nations with a population of at least 1 billion.

Influential Nations: Nations possessing Regional Influence equivalent to having spent 1,000 unendorsed days in the region.

I guess another way to accomplish this would be to allow non-resident WA nations vote in regions where the player has at least one puppet nation. Could such a feature be added?

Great addition! A couple of suggestions which may already be on the way:

- The ability to extend the voting period longer (The Internationale's embassy votes run 10 days, for instance)
- The ability to change to multiple checkbox selection instead of radio buttons

Thanks!

You can restrict polls to WA nations, but we don't track the people behind non-WA nations.

Shadow Afforess wrote:Also votes are public...does that imply in the future, private polls are possible?

Yes. Although that label is there to warn people who might otherwise assume their votes are anonymous.

Eluvatar wrote:It would be amazing if we could supply an explicit list of nations to allow to vote in a poll, however.

This might be possible in the future. But since votes are public, it's possible to do this manually, by announcing in advance whose votes will count, then tallying them up at the end, discarding any ineligible ones.

Acario wrote:I guess another way to accomplish this would be to allow non-resident WA nations vote in regions where the player has at least one puppet nation. Could such a feature be added?

Not likely, since we don't track who owns what puppet.

Misley wrote:- The ability to extend the voting period longer (The Internationale's embassy votes run 10 days, for instance)

We'll almost certainly get this.

Misley wrote:- The ability to change to multiple checkbox selection instead of radio buttons

Probably won't get this, or more complicated versions like preferential voting.

Good feature and with the added benefit of giving us a definition of 'native'.

Also, it would be nice if polls that we have already voted on or abstained could be hidden underneath some kind of spoiler- so they don't clog up the page.

In fact, it would be nice if all the major parts of a region page could be hidden underneath a spoiler. But that's sort of a big ask.

If a region is password protected, I think that the Poll should not be available for public viewing.

Also, who's to say that people couldn't establish several votes with several puppets?

There are small CSS bugs. The 1s are not placed the same in the various result bars. At the 'appel' result there is no bar left at the bottom of it, while at the 'slagroom' result there is no bar left at the top of it.

Edit: Also, the region of Nederland has bad taste. 'Appel' should clearly win.

Would it be possible to use a term other than 'native', since this definition is controversial in R/D circles and not accepted by all?
