I like Unexpect, Sigh, gonin-ish, Kadenzza, Ne Obliviscaris, iwrestledabearonce, Between the Buried and Me, Mirrorthrone, Violent Work of Art, and Dark Empire. The OP uses a fairly wide definition of metal so I think they all fit.
I don't like Iron Maiden or Metallica. At all.

I love anything from traditional heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple), to thrash metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Motorhead?), groove metal (Pantera), funk metal (Primus, FNM, RHCP, Infectious Grooves), industrial metal (NIN, Ministry, Rammstein, Garbage, Prong, Godflesh, etc.), stoner metal (Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Monster Magnet, Sleep) and so on.
I also think Metallica vs. Megadeth arguments are as stupid as Star Wars vs. Star Trek arguments. Both are awesome and have brought a massive contribution to metal, same way SW+ST influenced sci-fi as a whole.
I also think people who dislike Metallica's black album and Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia have something wrong with their brains.
EDIT: GOD DAMNIT I forgot Motorhead. I fuckin' love Motorhead

Dunno if they're thrash or traditional metal though.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but my favorite band is Slipknot. Other metal bands I love include Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Mournful Congregation, and Cannibal Corpse.

Korn are clearly the greatest. They invented the genre, and they're still the best.

Heavy Metal was a pretty crazy movie. Lots of gratuitous tits and violence, all without a real plot to speak of...just some green orb "the "Lok'nar" that somehow personified evil telling a random little girl the stories of his influence in the universe. There's even a segment with John Candy voicing a wimpy teen, who turns into a muscled man in another dimension and sexes up this lady or some shit.
Would probably be more insane if I did drugs, but I hate drugs so it was just meh.

Slipknot are fun. We're going to wear masks, scream gibberish and bang these pots together, FUCK YEAH! Then I went to see them live and there was all this rebel without a clue posturing. That's a turn off coming from any metal band, but Slipknot? Really? You guys perform in Madison Square Garden, make it to the top ten Billboard charts, and want me to see you as an outsider raging at the system? No, no, no, that doesn't work.
Ah well, "I Am Hated" still brings a big goofy smile to my face every time I hear it. And, no, I don't mean I'm hiding behind the lie of "ironic" listening, it honestly is that good.
Most of the other metal I listen to is deliberately strange.
Tomahawk,
Unexpect,
Mudvayne,
Mr. Bungle,
Carcass,
Misanthrope, etc.

It is common on the Internet, when discussing 'metal' to consciously, and erroneously, mention 'My Chemical Romance' as ones favourite 'metal' band.
One song by 'My Chemical Romance' from 'The Black Parade' album begins with the words "When I was a young boy". However, the use of these lyrics is abhorrent to the Internet community at large, as it usually leads to continuation of the song, which is considered whiny and emo and all things wrong with music.
Thus, in an attempt to diffuse the progression to latter lyrics, the starting phrase "When I was" is subsequently interrupted by exclaiming "a young warthooooooog!", a reference to a musical number during the original Lion King movie by Disney.
Thus, 'metal' warrants 'When I was a young warthog'.

Either I forgot to laugh, or the bandwagoneering just isn't intelligent, or funny (it rarely is).
I'm completely leaning toward the latter.

But, in all seriousness, to each their own. No, really. Though I do think the term "bandwagoneer" should be adopted by all.

They wanted to know the relevance of the phrase in this context. Believe it or not, that is where it comes from.
