Ladies and Gentlemen (and others) of the interweb, I submit this for a raucous and ranting topic of discourse and look forward to hearing what sides you all take.

there are physcial aspects to military service that being in some form of shape (outside of round) is required.

If it came down to a draft and needing every last man, they'd just have to go back to the reopen the Fatties section of Boot camp. These days, the military is more selective about fitness and most other things because they can afford to be picky (shitty economy->few job opportunities for people leaving school->people signing up for the only paycheck in sight).
Similarly, things like drug use and criminal records can be ignored, if warm bodies are desperately needed.

Then it is perfectly reasonable for them to reject you, assuming you are not a professional bodybuilder. A BMI of >30 is medically obese.

It should also be considered that in the event of the USA losing a major war, all the fit people would be dead and then it really would be a nation of obesity. Suppose then than the population drops to zero because none of the attractive females who survived (presumably because they for one reason or another didn't fight) didn't want to reproduce with the obese leftovers, or were raped beyond fertility by whoever beat the USA...

DON'T BE FAT. After all, you don't want to lose your way of life, do you? With enough people you might be able to win...

The military has finally started meeting it's recruiting quotas (something that I don't believe has happened since the Vietnam debacle and draft was over), so they can afford to get even pickier.
Now, philosophically, I'm in favor of the Army taking in anyone. If you're too fat, they throw you in a special fatties boot camp and see if they can't wring 120 pounds worth of Twinkies out of you through 6 months of intense training. However, I can understand that such is impractical, pricey and not necessary for the defense.

They should be physically capable of it. I am of the opinion that every branch of the U.S. armed forces should adopt the thinking of the U.S. Marine Corps: Every Marine's a rifleman. In other words, every one should have to go through infantry training regardless of what their MOS is.

We do, you marines are just the only ones that repeat it like a slogan day in and day out.

What branch did you try to enlist in? My BMI was 34.8 when I enlisted in the Army (By the end of basic training it was 27.5). The weight I was at at that my time would have meant that I wouldn't have been able to enlist in the Marines (although I also could not enlist in the Marines because I was 17 and had not completed school yet).
