Interest in a fantasy RP? (OOC/sighnup thread, OPEN)

Postby The Romulan Republic » Tue Nov 03, 2009 4:34 pm

This is the OOC thread for a faction-based ancient/medieval fantasy RP.

Here are the various IC threads:

Main diplomacy and intro thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23373

A Daring Raid: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23821

On commerce and faith: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=24226

Of Blood and Earth: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=24707

Rules:

No Godmoding, though this should be rather self-evident.
Population cannot excede ten million per faction.
Total troop counts cannot excede one million troops.
I have decided to split the RP into multiple IC threads to make events in any given thread easier to follow. The main (and currently only) IC thread is for diplomacy and introductory posts. If you want to do a different kind of story, such as a war, make a new thread and post a link to it here.

Please post the following information for a faction before posting in the IC thread:

Name:
Species (can include more than one):
Geography:
Major cities:
History:
Religion:
Type of Government:
Population:
Numbers and types of troops:
Major resources, imports, exports:

Map and currently claimed territory:

Map (thanks to OMGeverynameistaken): http://img259.imageshack.us/i/darienmap.png/

My interest is dependent on people not being idiots and using realistic numbers for the time period.

Noted. I personally like to keep rules for an RP pretty limited and simple, but we can have a limit on troop numbers.

Consider though that its not entirely unreasonable for their to be larger armies in a fantasy setting, depending on the extent of what magic is capable of accomplishing. For example, a necromancer does not need to feed or pay his troops (though it may cost him something to conduct the spells to raise them). So the troop limit will probably be a little higher than what would normally be possible in an actual medieval setting.

Edit: I found an interesting website with information on this topic:

http://www.writing-world.com/sf/hordes.shtml

Presuming this source is accurate, it suggests an army size of around an eight of the total population (to be rapidly cut in half by disease, but with healing magic we can leave that part out). With around a fifth of what's left available for offensive opperations.

Obviously though, we don't have to use these numbers if someone else can come up with better ones.

I'm talking about when people seem to think they can simply use their entire nations population in a PT thread. Medieval tech does not allow for massive populations that most NS nations have.

If you do a Fantasy RP than you can tweak the rules a bit (assuming their is an explanation for it such as necromancy)

I've got an old map/background information setup if you're interested. I could TG them to you for suitable modification to suit whatever theme you had in mind.

What would you propose as a suitable population limit?

What time period's tech do you want to use?

In 1250-1350 ad the population of all of Europe was estimated to peak at around 70-100 million. That a good enough reference point?

Souce:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_demography

Obviously if you decide to do a char based RPG this becomes mostly irrelevent.

Ok, in the (likely) event that this is a faction-based RP, I will set a population limit of ten million per nation. Is that acceptable to you?

Edit: I'm going to go ahead and make this the official OOC/sighup thread, and though the poll hasn't been up for very long, the results are sufficiently one-sided that I'm going to go ahead and make it a faction-based RP.

Details edited into the OP. I might add some sort of official backstory as well (don't worry, it will be sufficiently vauge to avoid contradicting anyone's factions), but I'm waiting to see what OMGeverynameistaken has for me.

IC thread will probably go up tomorrow.

Hmm...I'll most likely go with werewolves, in that case. (I'd have gone the necromancer route, but thats been called, so I'll go with my second choice...) Or perhaps vampires...anyway, I'll get the details up in about an hour, by which time I should have decided on which of these two I'll use.

Name: N'Reviun Empire
Species (can include more than one): Vampires and humans.

Geography: Predominantly fertile grasslands, with a large, untamed forest making up the eastern border.

Major cities: Aanreu (Capital) lying on the edge of the forest, with a high vampire population, Asherath, the largest city, lying more or less in the center of the Empire, and Revia, the Holy City, lying inside the forest itself, the only city whose population is made up soley of vampires.

History: The N'Reviun Soldun, as its proper name is, translates roughly to "Rule by Will of Revia", has existed for approximately the last six centuries. It also marked, it is said, the birth of vampires. It was founded, and is still ruled by, what is thought to be the first true vampire in the world. Known to the world only as the Emperor, the myths surrounding his origins range from marginally credulous to downright insane, with there being no clue as to which is the truth. What is certain, however, is that nearly seven hundred years ago, he acquired, by various means, control of a small town, that is now known as Aanreu. It is here that his rampage and subsequent conquest began, as he began to lead this small town to conquer neighboring city states. His tactics terrified the enemy, as it was said that the captured dead, from previous battles or from raids on small villages, were often launched, often burning, over the walls into the settlements. Often enough, there would be large chunks missing from these corpses, in what looked disturbingly like bite marks. After his inevitable victory, the few survivors would be taken as slaves, or incorporated into his ever growing army. This Emperor, who was at the time the only known vampire, pushed inoxerably westward, leaving flames and screams in his wake, until it got to the point that whole city-states would surrender at the mention of his coming. And his conquest lasted for nearly a century, with random decade long lulls in-between campaigns, the reasons behind which none, not even his most trusted generals, could fathom. It was, however, noted that after each such absence, his own, personal vampiric powers seemed to grow, and he became more terrible with each pause in conquest. Soon enough, however, westward expansion stopped completely, as he reached the coast, and it seemed, oddly enough, that this contented him. He did not turn his sites north or south, or even to the east, as many had feared, but ordered all armies disbanded, all humans struck from positions of power...and it was not for several years yet that his reasons for this became clear. He was creating new vampires, lesser than he, but still awe-inspiring, greater than a mortal could ever hope to be. These were made from only his most trusted of generals, numbering at five men, those who became known as the Elders. These by now ancient vampires began creating vampires themselves, who were lesser than them also, but still yet terrible to behold. And so on it went, with the Empire being divided up into increasingly smaller chunks as each new vampire demanded his small amount of land and humans. It was roughly three centuries ago, however, that something was discovered...each new generation of vampires was becoming progressively weaker, more human like as it were, though it was still to the point that even the latest generation of vampire can easily kill any normal human. There was still no doubt, however, that each vampire was but a shadow of his creator, who was himself a shadow of he who created him, and so on. It was at that point ordered that no new vampire was to be created without permission granted from the Emperor, or the mysterious she who had become his Empress And so it is now that there are eight seperate generations of vampires, with the second and most terrible being the Elders, those first children of the Emperor. The eighth are by far the most numerous, as well as the weakest. A vampire gains his social status by which generation he belongs to, and to a lesser degree, which of the Elder's he traces his lineage to. the Vampires are now the nobility of N'Reviun, with humans being little more than cattle to them, doomed to toil in the fields, and to be the unwilling meals of their masters.

Religion: The Aser'Reviun, or "Glory of Revia", worship of a dread Goddess Revia, patron deity of Blood and the Night. The clergy is purely vampires, mostly women, and sacrifice plays a large role, as does various nightly rituals, many of which are unwholesome, to say the least. It is most often humans who are sacrificed, and it is the greatest fear of most humans to be chosen by Her dread Priestess

Type of Government: Highly feudal, with the Vampires making up the nobility, and a large amount of power resting with the Emperor.

Population: Apprximately 6 million, with the vast majority of that being human.

Numbers and types of troops: It is impossible to say exactly how many, as it is up to the individual vampire how he or she will levy their humans, but most estimates put the number of humans that could be gathered for a campaign would be close to half a million, with perhaps half again that at most. The majority of these would be poorly armed and lacking in discipline, and driven primarily by fear of their masters. There would of course be a small number of elite vampiric forces, this varying wildly, and they would engage only if nesscesary. These vampires, as well as the better of the humans, will mostly fight from horseback, as the wide grasslands allow for large herds of horses.

Major resources, imports, exports: Mostly foodstuffs, moslty in the way of corn and grains, as well as a large number of beef and dairy products, owing to the large cattle and equine herds that roam the grasslands. There is also limited forestry allowed inthe Holy Forest, and so there are small exports of excellent hardwood.

Magic: Only the fifth generation upwards have the ability to use magic, so what could be called mages make up only a small portion of the vampiric population. Those of the fifth, and to a lesser degree the fourth, rely mainly on dark rituals, and ancient tomes, the spells found being enhanced by their own dark energies. Any spell that a vampire learns, will be corrupted, twisted and infused with darkness. For instance, a simple fireball would seem to suck the light into itself, darkening rather than illuminating, and would be slower to kill, yet inflict greater pain. A healing spell, will give the recipient hallucinations and nightmares, oftimes driving them insane. Many of the human soldiers would rather die, or lose a limb than let a vampire mage near them, but unfortunately for them they are not given the choice. It is with the third generation that the inherent vampiric abilities truly come into play, and they eschew the use of spellbooks or rituals. They can alter their own bodies, so that an arrow will pass right through, leaving a hole that does not bleed, and closes right up, or causing swords to bounce off as if hitting the hardest steel. The second generation rings this a step further, turning their bodies to mist or rain, or even, some say, to animals, and they are capable of drawing all kinds of nightly creatures to them. It can only be guessed the powers the Emperor has at his command, as it is said he is now more powerful than he ever was during his conquest, and his strength is slowly but surely gaining.

A very popular magic amongst Vampires, is that of necromanacy, and therefore it is common to see a fifth generation or higher guarded by bands of zombies and skeletal minions.

Also, it has been discovered that should a person die after being bitten, without having gone through the Turning, they shall arise within a week as ghouls, monsters akin to zombies, mindless, their all consuming desire is that to feed. How many a vampire has varies, as it has been noticed that it does not always happen, with it becoming more common with the higher generations. Therefore, it si quite likely that any Elder would be guarded by vast hords, as not only are more than half of their victims turned into ghouls, they have had centuries to amass these creatures. They are good for little more than cannon fodder, however, as though they will take commands from their Vampiric masters, they have no minds of their own, and therefore are not able to form tactics, or use any weapons beyond that of their own teeth and flesh.

Characters:*

Aneriu Vilach, "The Emperor"-Born some eight hundred years ago, he is the first and greatest of the Vampires, self-described Prophet of the Aser'Riviun, founder and leader of the N'Reviun Empire, he is amongst the fiercest beings that exist in the world, and arguably the most evil, by his own admission. He is one who would happily sacrifice a village for his own amusement, and there are such dark rumours surrounding the bowels of the dreaded fortress he claims as his palace, that no human will willingly come near. Very little is known about him other than this, his name itself being known only to the second and third generations. He is stronger now than ever, and by some unknown means, this power is yet growing...

Nineria Vilach, "The Empress"-The first and foremost of the Elders, the dreaded second generation, and one of two females amongst the Elders. She was the most trusted of the Emperor's generals and advisors during the formation of the Empire, and such was the reputation for ruthlessness during battle, that she was known as E'Mineriun, or Angel of Death. She is second only to The Emperor himself in terms of power.

*I'll be adding more than these two later. I intend to have all five of the second generation, as well as another character or two.

Name: The Empire of Light

Species: Majority human (80%) with a small number of Kitsune, Arran, and Leonin. Racism is a completely unknown occurrence in the Empire, and the idea of treating someone different just because of appearance is a alien concept to most citizens. They do accept treating different due to physical abilities (for example a Elf who joins the military will probably be assigned to the 3rd or 5th legion where they do not have to risk close combat) but only where such treatment makes sense.

Geography: The Empire of Light mostly lies on fertile plains, although its northern border is heavily mountainous and is very rich in ore and other minerals. A number of small forests are scattered around the Empire of Light,

Major cities: Songri (Capital) Houses the High Temple of the Goddess of Light and is the origin and heart of her worship. Is also home to the Templar of Light.
Metalia is the northern-most city in the Empire of Light and is home to the Weaponmaster Agents.
Kida is to the west of Songri and is home to the Samurai.

History: The worship of the Goddess of Light began in Songri after the women who would become the first High Matriarch managed a miracle, she could coat her own hand in fire that was hot enough to melt steel, yet she was untouched by the intense heat caused. As word of this miracle spread through the city of Songri, and later its neighboring cities of Metalia and Kida temples to the goddess were built in every city, town and village that saw themselves as being ruled by the various governments in the three cities.

As time passed and the church became more and more popular it became the only faction that the government of all three cities, who had traditionally hated each other, were forced to listen to. Slowly the power of the governments fell and the power of the church rose until, 15 years after it first appeared, and after a particular bitter year with the peasants struggling to feed their family, while the nobles feasted due to high taxes the church demanded that the government stand down and allow them to rule. When word of the government's refusal spread throughout the city a full blown revolt took place. After a day the position of High Matriarch became the ruler of Songri. Within a week word had spread to the cities of Metalia and Kida, and the government's of those two cities stepped down and asked the church to rule in their stead. As repayment for their actions they were allowed to maintain some influence in the new Empire of Light, and the descendants of these families would form the ranks of the Weaponmaster Agents and the Samurai.

As time passed the Empire of light prospered, the lands seemed to be blessed and the church removed the corruption and infighting that had plagued the three cities for so long.

Religion: The Goddess of Light. The religion of the goddess of light is mostly gender neutral (It slightly prefers females over males and that preference has imprinted itself on the mindset of the Empires citizens). It teaches tolerance and co-operation. It is mostly a peaceful religion, but when threatened punishment is swift and harsh.Prayer is held at sunrise, noon and sunset, although most (apart from those directly serving the Goddess) only pray at noon. The priestesses are exclusively female (One of the only 2 professions that does not have an almost 50/50 split of males and females) and many have magical abilities that allow them to cast fire and healing magic.

Type of Government: Theocracy. The clergy is exclusivly female and the task of government falls to them. The supreme ruler is the High Matriarch and the current High Matriarch is Gina Kelrun. Every High Matriarch has the right to appoint their successor.

Population: 9,000,000

Numbers and types of troops: 500,000 In total divided into 5 legions of 100,000. Each Legion has 10 Divisions of 10,000. Each Division has 10 Companies of 1,000. Each Company has 10 Platoons of 100. Each platoon has 10 Squads of 10. All Soldiers in the Empire of Light are professional soldiers, and most joined after coming of age (16 for males, 18 for females)

Each legion is armed and trained for a different style of warfare:
1st Legion: Heavy Cavalry - Uses Sabers, Lances and Kite shields. Armor is Half Plate. Used as shock forces.
2nd Legion: Light Cavalry - Uses Lances and shields. Armor is Studded leather Mainly used as scouts or flanking forces they will charge a foe, but will break off the fight very quickly, re-distance themselves from their foe and than charge in again.
3rd Legion: Missile Cavalry - Uses compound bows and does not dismount. No Armor
4th Legion: Mounted Infantry - use horses to move but fights on foot. Equipped with either a Glaive or a Spear & Shield. Armor is studded leather.
5th Legion: Mounted Archers - use horses to move but fights on foot. Equipped with a longbow. Armor is padded cloth

The Empire of Light also has 2 separate orders it can call on to aid its military forces.

The Weaponmasters: The Weaponmasters are based in the city of Metalia. They are masters of any weapon, and a Weaponmaster that has never seen a weapon type before, and has only just picked it up, is a match for someone who has spent their entire life training for it. They also have magical powers, and can channel those abilities through their weapons, giving them super natural abilities, or through their own bodies, allowing them to fight at a supernatural level of speed and strength. At the moment there are 500 Weaponmasters.

The Samurai: The Samurai are based in the city of Kida. They are usually employed as bodyguards for important individuals, and when they vow to protect someone a magical bond is formed. As long as the Samurai is following the orders of the person with this bond their abilities are enhanced. In addition the bond creates a shield around the recipient that blocks any incoming attack as long as the Samurai is still alive. Samurai also have magic, although they usually use it to enhance their armor or create a weaker version of the barrier protecting the person they are bound too. At the moment there are 500 Samurai.

The Church of the Light has its own forces that are independent to the Military. These two groups are the Zealots and the Templar.

The Templar: The Templar are the only men allowed to serve the goddess directly and the only males who could ever be equal to a priestess. They are very powerful battle-mages and wield a exotic weapon known as the double glaive. In addition to the abilities used by Weaponmasters and Samurai they also have the ability to channel fire along these weapons, and the double glaive itself can be split into 5 separate sections (three of the shaft and each blade forms another section) each connected by up to half a meter of chain. The exact length of the chain (nothing to half a meter) can be changed by the Templar at any time. Templar usually wear full plate armor, also enhanced by their magic. At the moment there are 20 Templar.

The Zealots: The Zealots are regular soldiers of the Empire of Light's army whose devotion and faith was noticed. A Zealot receives better training and enchanted equipment and are either assigned to a temple, an individual priestess or a Templar. Zealots do not take orders from anyone not part of the church. At the moment a single Division (10,000) of Zealots exist.

Major resources, imports, exports: The Empire of Light has large herds of high quality horses, and as such outside the city almost every family has at least one, and most people over 16 years of age has a horse of their own. The plains that cover most of the Empire are very fertile and most of it is devoted to farming. The Northern portion of the Empire's borders produce large amounts of iron and most of the Empires military equipment is made in Metalia. The Empire does not import much, and its only real exports are jewelry and statues.

EDIT: Additional Information:

Magic:

Weaponmasters: Can enchant their weapons with a wide variety of different abilities. The most powerful of these is known as 'Chill Wind'. A weapon enchanted by Chill Wind counts as a death attack and any living thing touched by it dies. They can also use magic to give their bodies passive increases in strength, speed or toughness. They always have a passive incarnation active that allows them to completly master any weapon or style b simply touching something that uses it.

Samurai: A Samurai can only use magic if they are 'bound' to someone. Anyone 'bound' to a Samurai has a nearly unbreakable barrier that blocks any attack for as long as the Samurai is still alive. Samurai can also create barriers and shields out of magic around themselves and can also use magic to give their bodies passive increases in strength, speed or toughness.

High Priestess: A High Priestess' magic is a combination of fire, healing and light type magic known as prayers. Fire prayers are used for attack and light prayers either create barriers or restrain something without injuring it. Light prayers can also cause illumination and dispel magic. Healing prayers heal things.

Templar: A Templar is several magnitutes more powerful than any other magic user in the Empire of Light, and their magic reflects that. They can activly wreathe any non-living thing in a divine fire that burns hot enough to turn anything not the Templar to ash. They can also use magic to give their bodies passive increases in strength, speed or toughness. They always have a passive incarnation active that gives them a very rapid regeneration and restores their energy very quickly. Because of this while a Templar can run out of magic, and often do, withing a few seconds it is all restored and they are back to full power.

Characters:

High Matriarch Ladonya: The Current High Matriarch of the Goddess of Light Ladonya is one of the most powerful High Priestess' in the Empire of Light. She is nearly 60 years old and has held her position for the past 25 years. She is a peaceful person, and it is mainly through her insistence that High Templar Tamaran has not allowed Empire soldiers or Zealots to leave the Empire's borders. However Ladonya is weakening from age and it is widely rumored that she is on the verge of stepping down.

High Templar Tamaran: Tamaran is one of the most militant Templar in their history, and was granted the title of High Templar 5 years ago after he defeated the previous High Templar in ritual duel. Even then his abilities were rumored to be legendary and many believe that he has the blood of the Goddess herself running through his veins. Since then his powers have continued to grow at a very rapid rate. Tamaran is the leader of the Templar and the Supreme commander of both the army and the Zealots. Ever since he became the High Templar he has been pushing for the Empire of Light to actively spread the worship of the goddess, but Ladonya has denied his requests.

Armory Master Soldor: Soldor is the most powerful of the Weaponmasters, and has spent nearly 30 years on his mastery. He is one of the few non-Templar who can actually stand against one, and also Ladonya's best and most trusted agent. He is highly respected across the land for his actions as a wandering judge, and the mere mention of his name is enough to send most criminals to the temples to seek repent and find redemption for their crimes rather than have them discovered by Soldor and brought into the open of trial. Soldor has obtained a Mastery of the Chill Wind enchantment to the point where its effects not only count as a passive incarnation it can also prevent anything not of equal power from injuring him.

Great Lady Raphi: Raphi is considered the most powerful of the Samurai, and is one of the few non-Templar who can actually stand against one. Raphi is the personal guardian and twin sister of Matriarch Saikora and has been at her side ever since Saikora was born. When the two grew of age they parted ways, although chance would later throw the two of them back together again when Raphi's first assignment was to escort Saikora to a meeting with The Light of Arrochar leader. When the party was attacked and mostly slaughtered Raphi's lone defense of Saikora for nearly 2 hours before help arrived in the form of Wing Riders sent to determine why Saikora was late. They arrived to find a scene of carnage, with the nearly mortally wounded Raphi collapsing upon seeing help arrive. Ever since then she has remained with her sister and it is a rare sight indeed to see one sister without the other.

Matriarch Saikora: Matriarch Saikora is a firebrand of a priestess and one of High Templar Tamaran's few supporters among the Matriarchs of the Goddess. However she is also the most well known among the faithful and is considered to be almost as blessed by the Goddess as Tamaran, such is her power. She is rumored to be the next High Matriarch, as even her loudest and most vocal opponents in the Temple cannot doubt that she is indeed blessed by the Goddess of Light herself.
