Which is better Star Trek or Star Wars?

Postby Great Jordan » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:42 am

I like both equally but I wanted to know, who favors what sci fi universe and which is the favorite among NSers.

If you have another option I missed leave a comment.

Leave a comment anyway.

Leave a comment if you hate JarJar.

Leave a comment if you think warhammer 40K is better than this crap.

Leave a comment if you are an antisocial couch potato who hates everything that doesn't involve Tom Cruise.

Leave a comment if you actually read my whole post.

Be polite please.

I like the Old school Star Wars movies 4 5 and 6. I don't really care for the new ones much though they are good for eye candy. Jar Jar is annoying but I don't think it was a racist thing, just an annoying attempt at keeping kids interested. I also like many Star Trek movies and shows but not so much the newest movie, I think it is dumb to mess with the enterprise it is such an iconic ship.

This all comes down to whether you're more action-oriented or prefer that deep-thinking kind of thing.

I like both, fwiw.

From a technological standpoint, Star Wars completely destroys Star Trek.

From an Ideological one, the Federation far out does the Empire and the Republic. Star Trek for me.

This should be in Arts & Fiction.

Ok, I shall, though I'm not sure how long this thread will stay in General.

It's a tricky one to answer. Eight year old me would have said Star Wars without hesitation (there only having been Star Trek:ToS at that point). Teenaged me would have ignored the question, because he thought he was way too cool to answer it, and everyone else was way to stupid to understand any answer he might deign to give (I was an awful, awful teen). Twenty-five year old me would have sung the praises of TNG, while holding to the idea that Empire Strikes Back and Wrath of Khan were the peaks of the two franchises, movie-wise.

Now, however, in this post-SW-prequels/post Voyager & Enterprise world, I can't say that fortysomething me is prepared to choose.

I think the original star wars trilogy was the best sci phi work from both of the respected fictional worlds, but as a franchise, star trek has the tv shows along with the movies. My vote goes to start trek.

Neither is better.

I prefer Star Wars. To me, it raises much more interesting questions in much more interesting ways (when you include the Expanded Universe, at least.) I can't really think of anything about Star Wars that annoys me other than the fact that no one made a clone army of that shape shifter species. Seriously. That'd be badass!

Dem Knights of the Old Republic.

Also, edit: I FUCKING HATE THE OLD REPUBLIC MMO. They fucked up so much shit. But that's a story for another day.

I prefer Star Wars but that doesn't make it better, just what I like more.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I like them both. I just wish the more recent editions to both series were more insightful and less CGI oriented.

I hear it was because Bioware deliberately used a game engine that wasn't even really finished yet. The engine was finished long after the game was released and its makers say that Bioware's appointed guy on the MMO team was so insistent on using it, even when he was told by them that it wasn't ready just yet.

Star Wars has better movies and EU, while Star Trek has much, much, much better TV shows, which is where it truly shines. Then again, it's not really too impressive as far as the competition goes- one good, short cartoon series and the new shitty, braindead 3D cartoon.

Also, Star Wars games tend to be much better, although I do love some Star Trek games, like Star Trek Legacy.

Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.

It wasn't the engine that pissed me off, it was fairly standard gameplay for an MMO. The thing that pissed me off was the storyline. I literally couldn't get past the character creation screen without finding something bullshit. I mean, you can play as the Sith race. Which were extinct for like, a few EONS before the game started! And you could go to Tython, which is bullshit, because Tython would kill everyone on there because they aren't Je'daii and just pansy Jedi, and then there were two Zabrak races because people don't know what tattoos are on aliens and Sentinel was a advanced form of guardian and Jedi knight was an advanced form and Consulars aren't Jedi knights and arhggfh.

I literally couldn't make it past the tutorial level there were so many storyline fuckups. Maybe I have Star Wars OCD after writing a novel in the series, but maaaaan, NOTHING in that game was right.

This question is pointless because the two are incomparable as they exist in different genres. Star Trek is science-fiction while Star Wars is science-fantasy. Trying to ask which one is "better" makes about as much sense as comparing Transformers and Paranormal Activity. Sure, both movie series suck balls, but the former is action while the latter is "horror." The only way they can be compared is in the most general of senses, i.e. "Which makes you less want to kill yourself?" The same situation is in place for Star Trek and Star Wars, except that only half the movies of each are terrible. They really can't be compared beyond "Which is more enjoyable to watch?"

Yeah, same here. But that one was just offensive in how bad it was.
