This is a different kind of RP; a character RP, but focused less on the important politicians and public figures as the academics and whatnot (although there is nothing precluding an academic dabbling in politics). Either way, the intent is for people to RP individuals they may not otherwise have opportunities to RP; or perhaps stretch a little by getting away from the beaten path of king/presidents/generals. The event is a symposium where interested parties will discuss the Science of Nations, specifically the breakdown of "subspecialties" (i.e., the divisions within the technical specialties of Materials Engineering, Alteration, et al).

His other significant works include his Sacred History: Rise of the People for the Temporal Crusade; Monotheism in the Age of Atheism; Double Meanings: The Threat and Promise of Posthumanism; and Coping With Temporal Relativity in Information Science.

After one week from today (October 21, 2009), the thread will be closed to new applicants and the conference will begin. Please be ready if you plan to attend. Note that this does not mandate a "post rotation" for attendees; merely be ready to post arrival at that time, and then "pipe in" when you feel you have something to contribute. The symposium is, as I understand it, a fairly unstructured discussion between equals, thus it lends itself fairly well to freeform, casual RP.

As well, the standard restrictions against terrorists/death gods etc. If you can convince me otherwise I might be persuaded to budge; the plot need not be completely static, after all. Stay within reason, however.

While IC the event lasts a week, and I am giving this thread a week to percolate attendees, once the symposium has begun there is no strict OOC timetable for posting.

The Center for the Study of Technology and Society of Marratzanis, in association with Dr. Dacre Ambrogino Wieland, invites all eligible professionals and academics to attend a symposium on Book IV of Dr. Wieland's Inquiry into and Analysis of the Nature of the Science of Nations: On Subspecialties.

The symposium will last one week, and be hosted in Siegler Hall on the University of Marratzanis campus. Meetings will last for four hours each day, after which attendees will also be welcome to tour the University and city proper, and they are also invited to attend the grand opening of the State Archives at the end of the event.

Ga’Ton read the message, his interest stirred slightly. It was mainly to see how close the other nations were to Ta’Nar level technology but the opportunity to check on other nations without needing to employ the typical cloak and dagger routine was certainly tempting. Arranging a meeting between the Warlord and himself, the Ta’Nar willed himself through the Link to appear before Nhur-Galladu.

“Greetings, what does my Grand Admiral wish of me today?”

“I have just received a message, rather an invitation for science representatives to travel to a symposium at the University of Marratzanis. I am interested in attending.”

“Why do you wish to attend?”

“Truthfully, it is partly to see how close the younger races are to our tech level and to see if I can pick up any new tricks.”

“Our dedication to Dimensional Mechanics as well as a few others that led to our path has left us decidedly lacking in other areas. I approve as long as you either send an Avatar or someone else in your stead.”

“Thank you My Lord, I will create an Avatar and send it there.”

Ga’Ton returned to his previous location aboard The Heart of Darkness, the Ta’Nar R&D station. He composed a reply and created an avatar to send to the meeting.

Species: Rethast (Humanoid with a few notable differences. The skin is deathly pale and lacks any shine, they are hairless except on the head where their 'hair' takes the form of needle like spines roughly two inches in length which extend backwards from the head. Usually the spines are colourless, tough they can be dyed. Eight canine teeth instead of four, eyes are cloudy as though blind and their veins are very visible.
Specialty/Concentration: Gravitonics and Material Engineering mainly. Also some experience in Reality Alteration (specifically enhancing the Inertialess Drive and dimensional technology).
Appearance: 7ft2in, his 'hair' has been dyed green. Wears a midnight blue 3/4 cloak and grey sleevless shirt. Silver stitching on the coat. Military boots.
Character Bio: Leinkas was the top student of the Rethast scientist who invented the Inertialess Drive. Since his advancement to head of Military research, Leinkas has made many advancements in Rethast propulsion and energy weapon systems almost trebling the speed of the subluminal travel in Rethast starships. He was responsible for much of the design of the Xentrifuge Class Leviathan and also developed the "World Eater" stations capable of strip mining a world of natural resources in weeks, although these are not used by the Militocracy.
He is also the head scientist for the Underreik, and is currently overseeing the Honour Project and has successfully created a Singularity Generator which can be used to power a starship for a fraction of the danger associated with current Rethast generators.

The Kirill Petrovich Nivensky Department of History at the University of Concord, Liberty-City, would like to arrange for the attendance of two of our leading academic minds at the symposium. Among those will be Professor Neek'rook Naid [dohwar by species], author of the book Flowers and Tablets: Daily life in 22nd Century Arizona Nova, as well as of the award-winning Fork, Spoon, Spork: Novanian Table Manners in the first half of the 22nd Century. Professor Naid co-edit the Advanced Novanian Studies quarterly of Concord University. Another one of our professors visiting would be Professor Angelina Davidoff. Professor Davidoff is the Friedrich Stossel Chair of the History of Science, and author of the book Early Gravitics Research in Kanuckistan: A Tale of Two Breakthroughs. Professors Naid and Davidoff would be accompanied by two teaching assistants each, and a secretary. We hope that the appropriate arrangements can be made for their arrival and stay in Arizona Novanian facilities.

Traas' Khaa was not a 'speaker to other'(diplomat) nor was he a member of 'the teeth and claws of the race'(soldier caste) of which six had acompanied him. Both of these were expendible, he on the other claw, was most certainly not! As a member of the 'seeker of knowledge'caste (scientist) he and his ilk where highly regarded by all Sskiss, regardless of caste, species or rank in life.

Traas' Khaa was told, "Give glory to the great Sskiss race, reveal nothing... Like a true hunter. Show the egglings ingnorant of great truths the might of Sskiss intellect! The triumph of Sskiss technology!" And Traas' Khaa would obey...

However, even someone as smug, arrogant and haughty as Traas' Khaa (many of his caste possessed these qualities) he knew that his own people, while excelling in certain theoretical and technological fields equally lagged behind in others...

In effect, he knew his mission was twofold; to hopefully awe others at the gathering with a display of Sskiss technological ingenuity and might, and two, to hopefully scavange some data and information on his own. After all, even he realized that new ideas, and hense, possibilities, could be gleened from other species.

Discription: A typical healthy male of his species, Traas' Khaa is 4.3 meters in length, 1.85 meters in height, mass: 167kg. Bright redish brown plumage covering trunk, upper limbs and base of tail. Rest of body a dark russet colour. A violet "mohawk" like structure of quills is clearly seen on his head. Large gloss black talons on hands and feet. The tail is banded in a darker hue.
Achievments: Traas' Khaa was instramental in the reverse engineering of several captured intact pieces of Imperiatus technology after the Ils Sorne civil war. He is currently one of the greatest Sskiss minds known. He, among other prominent scientists, formed a group that over a span of just over twenty (terran) years discovered new theoretical knowledge, technologies and as well as expanded on other older theories and knowledge bases after the war.

The world of New Suwalki has been a divided world. After many negotiations and difficult diplomatic engagements, an artificial hemisphere has split it among two civilizations: its eastern hemisphere belonged to the New Paradigm of Polish Worlds, while its western hemisphere belonged to Arizona Nova, and the same applied to all "perpendicular space", meaning that all the orbital zone perpendicular to one of the hemispheres belonged to one while the other orbit belong to the others, and the inner and outer star systems have been also split as zones of control among both. A tense, even if productive relationship has emerged from such agreement. And it would be no wonder that, the New Paradigm had interests in such event, as their cultural mindset still didn't up with the extremely fast technological advances they had, although they would definitively not be willing to discuss all their knowledge.

Character Bio: Karol was born in 1923. His academic records have been outstanding, and in 1939, at the start of the Second World War he was not drafted due to his promising skills. He managed to escape from Poland just in time, and went to exile in England, where he, in 1940, despite being only 17 years old, gave a significant aid to the Polish scientists that broke the Enigma Code. In 1944, after the success of the Warsaw Uprising, he returned to Poland, only to discover the only reason the Germans and Soviets were both retreating to opposite directions and away from Poland was the fact several new fronts have been opened, by an invasion of aliens from outer space. During the dark years upon which the very survival of the human race was at stake, he became famous for developing the KP-61 Electromagnetic Denial Gun in 1946, through reverse-engineering of captured gravitic and "portal" alien technologies, the first weapon truly capable of efficiently defeating the electromagnetic force fields of dreaded Tripods other than destructive atomic bombs, which concept has been then used to developed larger weapons for tanks and aircraft, turning the tide of war in favor of humanity. Dr. Wieland was busy, looking through the edits of the final draft of another paper - this one related to dealing with the skewing of provenance by relativity - when he heard a knock on his door.

"Yes? Come in," he said, wheeling aside from the screen.

The door opened, revealing a woman in a single-breasted suit; short and thin, but by no means skeletal, with some graying hair. Dr. Wieland smiled.

"Professor Olivia!" he said, "How wonderful to see you."

She shook her head as she stepped into the room, seating herself opposite of Dr. Wieland. "I've told you before, call me Medea, doctor," she said, clucking disapprovingly.

"Professional courtesy, dear Medea. Now, what brings you to Marratzanis?" he asked curiously.

"Well, the symposium of course," she said.

"That's not for months now," replied Dr. Wieland incredulously.

"Well, I may also have gotten a position at the university," she said coyly.

"That is tremendous news, Medea," said Dr. Wieland, grinning broadly. "Congratulations! I would have thought I'd heard about it before this..."

"Oh, don't be silly Dacre," she said, "You're so busy planning the symposium I doubt you hardly have time for anything else."

"Eh, not so busy, not yet," he said, waveringly.

"Have you gotten any applications?" persisted Olivia.

"I was just about to check that..." said Dr. Wieland, turning to the screen.

Olivia laughed. "That's the absent-minded professor I remember."

Dr. Wieland shrugged his shoulders, and narrowed his eyes as he perused the list. His brows furrowed.

"Something the matter?" asked Olivia.

"Nothing wrong... just, very strange, and unexpected."

"Unexpected how?" she asked.

"Balrogga," he said, fixing her again with an intent stare.

She stiffened somewhat, and repeated, "Balrogga? Will you have to... notify someone?"

"I have a feeling," he said, as he began to scroll through again, "That such things will find their way into the appropriate ears, irregardless of any report I send."

"You don't think they'll be barred?" said Olivia.

"No..." said Dr. Wieland, stroking his chin. "Relations between the state and Balrogga are somewhat... nebulous, but not, to my knowledge, hostile. They are very advanced in terms of dimensional technology, but it's the half of the Alteration coin that people don't seem to have a problem with... yet. We shall see. The rest of the applications are promising as well. Mainly academics from contributing countries; Derscon's Academies, Concord U, as well as Rethan, Sskiss, and our new Polish friends. Hopefully we'll see a few more from outside too."

"Indeed," said Olivia. "So I was wondering, if I could get the grand tour of the campus here? I imagine you know it pretty well, by now."

"Mainly just from running between the boxes here and the College of Archives and Libraries there, though I'm familiar enough with the rest to give at least a passable tour," he said, pushing himself back from the desk. "But yes, I think I can make some time now, in celebration of your being hired."

The Royal Academy lay far from the large urban centres of the planet, although the spires of Vanimelda could be seen on the horizon. The Academy itself covered a vast area, with multiple halls, with high vaulted roof's clad in red ceramic, with individual spires spaced around the vast grounds, a melding of blue, gold, and red reaching towards the sky.

In an office located in the grounds below, Dr. Arcendor considered his most recent message. He studied it closely.

"University of Marratzanis, hm? .. An invitiation to a Symposium.. Intriguing..." He said to himself, reading it once more. He wasted no time in dispatching his response indicating his wish to attend, however.

His work has been used in both civilian and military projects throughout the history of the Illuminated Union, even finding a place in the Sornei Republic in designs that used Areian inspired weaponry and power distribution systems.

Okay. Honestly, I have no idea how to RP out how Morningstar even found out about this, so I'm just going to handwave it and send my character on her merry way. She'll be coming by civilian transport, and has had a long series of flights just to even get here.

Species: Reikoan - The Reikoan are a species that in ancient times was originally engineered to serve as playthings for a considerably more advanced race of "Gods". Reikoans resemble nothing so much as humanoid, bipedal terran skunks (Mephitidae). There are notable differences, the most visible of which is that the hairs of their pelt resemble fiber-optics. Combined with color-producing cells in the follicle of each hair, every Reikoan is able to alter the exact color and pattern of their fur; an ability that is under full concious control. In addition to this physical trait, Reikoan mental development is unusual as well. Their brains are capable of a remarkable degree of compartmentization, with each "facet" of their minds able to concentrate on a separate task at the same time. The highest number of facets ever recorded was twenty one, achiaeved by a master of Reikoan meditation. This faceting of the mind allows Reikoans to perform mathematic and conceptual thinking almost on par with modern computer systems. Reikoans are often found as researchers, administrators, diplomats, and linguists.

Character Bio: Currently Selahn is the closest thing the Morningstar fleet has to a prominent researcher, one of the few civilians left behind during TRIAD's Exodus. That she was left behind by the corporation is a point of contention for Selahn, which has caused her to develop a nearly hostile dislike of all things corporate or beuraucratic. She sees the symposium as an opportunity to escape the confines and struggles of life aboard the Fleet, and in the bargian rub elbows with scientists from across the galaxy. In some ways, Selahn is the stereotypical absentminded researcher, with at least part of her mind always on the next research project or paper to write.

The symposium has begun. Arrivals of your delegates is assumed; participants jump in after this post with your ideas. Put OOC notes in spoiler tags.

ICly, each session lasts four hours; OOCly, I will signal the middle of a session by bringing around drinks (which have also been presumed to have already been ordered, and may describe as they arrive), and the end of a session by means of a "last call." ICly, the symposium will run for seven days; one day and one session for each specialty, in the order you see in the main SoN thread. The goal is to chart out the sub-specialties that are components of the parent specialty. It will have to be decided in discussion how deeply or widely a particular specialty will be mapped out; i.e., how many layers are mapped, and how many different parts there are to that layer.

In between sessions, indicate whether your character intends to chat or interact with another character, go on a tour of the university and city of Marratzanis, do something else, or go back to their lodgings (i.e., "sit out" the RP until the next session). I'll be fairly liberal in terms of alloting the free roleplay time in between sessions, but the goal is to keep the RP moving, and if there isn't much going on between a session even if the posted intent was otherwise, I will post an OOC note warning that the next session is imminent regardless.


As the last of the participants filed into the board room, Dacre took one last long look around. The small number of applicants had at least made it so that arranging lodging and quarters to stage the symposium in rather easy; they had ended up in the Andris Memorial Board Room on the top floor of Siegler Hall's tower.

It was a long, handsome, varnished-wood paneled affair, with the tall gothic-windows on the one wall, looking down on the university campus below, a mahogany table seated in the center of the room, around which were seated the participants, in fine leather-backed armchairs. On the back wall hung a painting of Tycho Andris, the student-turned-professor-turned-noble who had assisted in returning Anikar to Arizona Nova centuries ago, and some of his forebears, for Tycho and his line had been generous patrons and participants in the academic tradition of Arizona Nova, and even though that man and his house were long gone, their legacy remained. A vaulted ceiling stretched high above them, lending the room an airy feel, even amidst the trappings of scholarly solemnity.

The table was long and ovoid, and Dacre sat at one end of the table, while the Sskiss delegate was given the other, in order to give him enough room for his length. Everyone else was arrayed as they chose at the sides.

Dacre cleared his throat, and began: "Gentlemen, gentlewomen, fellow sapients: I warmly welcome you all to this Symposium on the Fourth Book of the Science of Nations."

"Now, to begin, I will ask you first: why, indeed, do we bother to do this? I've no doubt that my invitation likely fell on other ears which, if they were not baffled by it, were perhaps even scornful of it as the blowing of so much hot air."

"The answer is, in my mind, rather simple. Classification, and categorization, are without doubt the fundamental human activity. Whether you put any stock in it or not, I find it telling that the first action man took as recorded in the holy book of Christianity, the Bible, was not the making of tools or preperation of food, but the naming - the classification - of the animals. In the annals of science, the design of the taxonomic ranks by Charles Linnaeus, a system designed to help classify living creatures, is a landmark within biology, and the framework around which all later science - including Darwin's Origin of the Species - was built."

"And the purpose is not to further complicate matters; Science of Nations was, in my mind, wrote in direct response to an overabundance of classification. I have seen an engineer from one country attempt to talk shop with an engineer of another country and give up in frustration because of locally biased terminologies and jargon. Modern technology has become a hopeless babel of terms, and the aim of Science of Nations is to begin to cut through all that to get at the essence of a technology or group of technologies, so that we can start, finally, to understand each other. I have observed this has, to some extent, already begun, as many of you professed on your application to specialties stemming from the first two books, which is heartening."

"Yet stopping at the layer of specialties was not enough, nor did I ever consider it enough, but at the same time, I did not think it possible for myself alone to possibly see all ends in this matter. That is indeed why you have been assembled: your various specialties are more ideally suited than my own generalist worldview to assembling this technological taxonomy."

"And now we begin: today, we consider the subspecialties of Material Engineering: the manipulation of matter that results in a usable material product."

Selahn glanced around at those invited to the symposium, a rather meager crowd indeed. Still, there were a few non-humans to pique her curiosity while she waited for things to start. Soon enough their host arrived and began with a short speech. Smiling to herself, she thought that this would be a productive use of her time after all. Rising from her chair, the fur around her collar shifting to a pale lavender color, offsetting the teal of her tunic. "The desire to classify and categorize isn't limited to your species Dr. Weiland. I personally feel that your efforts to classify and categorize national technologies is innovative I'll admit, however a worthy enterprise for any researcher of a philosophical nature. I hope we call can come away from this gathering more educated than we arrived."

Selahn began a modest round of applause, unmindful if anyone joined her or not, then resumed speaking, "Now, to work. Right off I can offer several suggestions for further classify the subject of Materials Engineering. We might define sub-categories based on the types of materials being worked, for example metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, biological tissues, carbon and diamondoids, and so on. We might also define categories based on the scale of the engineering, with examples ranging from celestial macro-structures, all the way down to nano-scale engineering. I'd like to give the floor to some of my other colleagues, so I don't monopolize our time."

Maximillian Leinkas sat quietly, his hands on the table in front of him. He listened intently to everything that was said, noting the curious change of fur colour of the first to speak. He was not a man to speak rashly and thought for a moment before speaking, unwilling to either give too much away nor insult anyone. His somewhat ghastly appearance made it difficult to appear friendly, not that he was an especially nice person, but he didn't want to give the impression that he was disregarding what had been said.

"I, personally, believe that the material should be what defines the sub-categories. While I can understand your second recommendation, from experience once one has mastered the methods of engineering regarding, for example, biological tissue then they can construct devices of almost any size using such a material. This is not say your suggestion of size-based classification has no merit, rather it should be noted that one must learn to use metals, diamonoids or any other material before attempting to construct anything using those materials."

Leinkas smiled politely and brushed back his dark green hair. He was not used to explaining himself to non-Rethast, and he sincerely hoped his message was understood. He was, however, glad that he had elected to use his newly built subterfuge breathing implants rather than the usual bulky and sinister breathing equipment. It made him appear more approachable.

Subtlety was sometimes needed in international relations...

"What are they scheming about?" Karol thought, sitting next to one of the least visible corners of the conference, for, after witnessing the appeasement of the Nazi Reich, and the way diplomacy worked, he couldn't simply treat it as a mere scientific meeting. There was still some shielding from ambitions that the New Paradigm had at their hands: the secrecy about the AS principle upon which both space travel and majestic planetary gateways capable of transporting people directly from the surface of one world to the surface of other. He was not a specialist in AS technology, and such fact was perhaps the reason why he was chosen to represent Poland, as he lacked any vital information that could threaten the sovereignty of the New Paradigm and open the Gates of Krakow. He was, like his people, still cautious towards Arizona Nova, as, they could be hiding their agenda after all.

For now, he carefully did what the wise would do: listen. As he wasn't really specialized in materials science, but in electrical engineering and in the complex AS equations applied for small scale purposes, even though the questions being posed as of now were so simple that he could dabble in them, he decided to wait, listen and watch. Sooner or later, it would be his time to present what he had to contribute with the symposium. Hopefully, it would be about more than categorization, as Karol wondered if he could bring any truly useful information with him from this event, while only sharing information about their technology that wasn't deemed critical.

Ga’Ton sat in the chair at the table where his place was indicated. He was currently bust “listening” to everyone. While he was doing this, he also cast his gaze about the room, noting any electromagnetic energy fields indicating the presence of wiring in the floor, ceiling, walls, or anywhere energy was needed to flow. He already figured the cameras would be present, as well as the microphones, this was supposed to be too important to not be recorded and he knew this before he even arrived. Nobody hosting this kind of event would not record the proceedings, and then offer a copy to the participants. The Fallen Empire had done just this in the Temporal Mechanics, the Dimensional Mechanics, and the Quantum Physics Symposia they had held in the past. Each participant went home with a complete recording afterwards. This kept the others from believing they needed to sneak in recording devices and provided a common record everyone had access to. It was an attempt to keep everyone honest.

Of course, the Ta’Nar had his own way of recording the events. Attaching a separate fragment of his mind onto each participant, it observed each as if it was their own camera, noting every twitch, hesitation in voice, and even the passive thoughts all sentient beings emitted when they spoke which was normally like a second voice accompanying the verbal communication but when they told a falsehood, a telepath able to hear this voice would note the difference in the stress on the thought was from the voice. While not impossible, it was difficult to cover lies. If he went “active” it was without a doubt there was none in the room able to resist his mental probe but there was no reason to play that type of game, instead he simply listened in on what was projected without him doing anything, much like an interrogator using body language to read his captive. Also, there was nothing illegal with simply listening, no matter how accurate or unique the talent was. Things would get into the “grey areas” if he actually tried to go active with his telepathy.

Ga’Ton sat back and watched the others as they spoke, continuing to observe while the others spoke. When there was a reason for him to speak, he would. Until then, he would just remain attentive.


OOC:

I WILL NOT get anything from your characters unless you let me (post stuff you want him to hear with a different color font - like BLUE or GREEN - if you want me to pick anything up), otherwise I will not get anything more that someone who is observant would also get watching the body language of the others. Other members have spoken in Purple and in Italics so I cannot suggest those...

Dacre listened to the comments of Maximillian and Sehlan attentively, occasionally taking up a datapad and writing on it. When they had finished, he replied:

"All good points; now, one thing I had considered ahead of time is along the lines of your suggestion, Selahn: namely, the scale of the project. I agree with Maximillian, however, in that making size the defining characteristic of each subcategory is not feasible. I propose this: that we establish a "continuum" overlay of scale over the subcategories of Materials Engineering. In other words, imagine the probably subcategories, and then imagine, o'ertop of them, a line, with "micro" at one end of the scale and "macro" at the other end."

As Ga'ton began to exert his psionic powers, two creatures took notice. Gorm and Yumn, two Tzoy anthropologists, were hard at work on a presentation of sorts for their schoollings and colleagues at home on Baramua. Tzoy, while being psionic, were markedly different from other races. Their collective consciousness relied on psionics to operate, but it wasn't anything a Tzoy practiced or mastered - they simply emanated it, like heat or light. To them, a creature like Ga'ton was like a bright spotlight where they would be like wisps in the fog, and his actions like noise. And right now, he was being exceptionally loud.

Do you hear above us, schoolling Gorm? queried Yumn.

The bright one is making quite the racket, replied Gorm. Does he know this is a place of study?

Likely he is used to being the only one so gifted in a place, stated Yumn knowingly. We shall be polite?

Wise course, agreed Gorm. We know little of their kind or their tempers. Hm, such would make a good presentation for next year's conference! The Anikari overschool would appreciate much. I shall query...

Directing his attention upwards, he addressed Ga'ton psionically: Greetings bright one, from one like-gifted. If it is not too much trouble, could you possibly tone down your gift? I know not its exactness but it is very loud within our auras' ears. Thank you.

Interesting, Ga’Ton “whispered” to prevent his reply from being too strong, The only active powers I am using are generating the body the others are seeing and the telekinetics that allow me to move objects. I suppose I do not need the solidity of the form and could eliminate the solid form of my image.

Ga’Ton thought for a moment. Would I be able to meet you at some time? It would be interesting to actually converse with another superior life form, all the Psi dead tend to get quite tedious when that is all you do meet.

Back at the meeting, no sign of the separate communication could be seen, the Ta’Nar had assigned it to another fragment.


OOC:

I do think those are the only two powers I am using actively, everything else is passive so I would not be emitting anything.

Selahn smiled and nodded to the Rethast scientist, You bring up a good point. I was merely making suggestions as to possible categorizations. In any case, I to actually prefer to specify by material being used, rather than the specific scale. I do think that if we are to categorize technological capability of whole nations, some mention should be made of what scales a nation is capable of working with on a regular basis. I don't think that a sliding scale is really necessary here Dr. Weiland, but perhaps the entries on that "scale" can be used as... I don't know, "side categories"?"
It was at this point that Selahn trailed off, partly to let others speak, but also because she'd been distracted by something she "heard". She'd always known she was a low-grade teep, or telepath in more polite terms, however she'd never really explored or trained her abilities beyond the basics of screening out the thoughts of "Mutes" who tended to shout at the top of their minds. Now however the mental voice of Ga'Ton was intruding past her distracted mental barriers. Finally her curiosity was piqued and she lowered a fragment of those defenses, listening to the Ta'nar in wonder. She'd only heard rumors about the Ta'nar, but it seemed even those had been understated. Looking at Ga'Ton with both eyes and mind, she saw what she'd thought to be flesh and blood was simply a telepathic and kinetic avatar, and the true creature blazed with a hidden radiance. Tentatively she tried to remember her schooling on mental contact, reaching out and with the barest wisp of thought brushed the edges of that brilliant mind. ~You are a Ta'nar, yes?~
