Your Nation's Numerical System

Postby Sathera » Tue Jan 10, 2012 8:07 pm

Pretty simple. Please list what sort of Numerical system your nation uses below, and what the numerical symbols are called in your language. For example:

English:

0: Zero
1: One
2: Two
3: Three
4: Four
5: Five
6: Six
7: Seven
8: Eight
9: Nine
10: Ten

Satherian:

0: Ünnghn
1: Eenghn
2: Zwuunghn
3: Järghn
4: Träghst
5: Khjöl
6: Näant
7: Sartgh
8: Wänghn
9: Driighst
10: Ärram

I only went from 0-10, but you can go as far as you like. If you don't use the basic 123 system, then please list and show an example if possible of what Numerical system your nation does use.

YellowApplans use a hexadecimal numbering system exclusively, the only exception being in dealings with foreigners, in which decimal will be the default numbering system used. In instances where numbering systems are mixed, decimal numbers are denoted with a subscript 10, while hexadecimal numbers are generally written as-is, with a subscript 16, or with a "0x" prefix, depending on the author of the publication (if written); in spoken interactions, decimal numbers are explicitly stated as such in mixed cases.

YellowApplan spoken/spelled numerals are as follows:

0: "zero"
1: "one"
2: "two"
3: "three"
4: "four"
5: "five"
6: "six"
7: "seven"
8: "eight"
9: "nine"
A: "alph"
B: "bra" (occasionally "bet" in some sub-dialects of YellowApplan English)
C: "char" (occasionally spelled "khar")
D: "del"
E: "ep" (occasionally "ech" or "ekh" in some sub-dialects of YellowApplan English)
F: "fox"

YellowApplans use a modified form of SI units called the "YellowApplan Metric System", which defines the metric prefixes in terms of hexadecimal quantities rather than decimal. Thus, one YellowApplan kilometer would be equal to 0x1000 meters, or 4,096 meters in decimal, while one YellowApplan millimeter would be equal to 0x0.001 meters, or approximately 0.000244140625 meters in decimal.

We use the base 10, but historically our Teddy Skript was base 8, which is a lucky number for us. The government does not have any de jure measuring system, but the de facto one is the metric system.

We use base ten (I started to write "base 10", but, really, every base is base 10...) these days, but before the first Eahlcynn came to what was then Columban Avalonia and became Eahland, we used base twelve, and there are still artifacts of that in our language (notably, that that's twelf rather than just twatyne). It's not always clear whether our earliest writings are using base ten or base twelve, which causes no end of frustration for historians. Of course, the numbers from that period are generally not all that accurate anyway. Army strengths (especially those of defeated foemen) are often overstated by what has to be orders of magnitude, and even more readily estimable numbers are often more poetic than accurate.

Anyway:
0 - nan
1 - an
2 - twa
3 - þreo
4 - feower
5 - fif
6 - six
7 - seofon
8 - eahta
9 - nigon (pronounced "neeyhon")
10 - tyn
11 - endlufon
12 - twelf
13 - þreotyne
14 - feowertyne
15 - fiftyne
16 - sixtyne
17 - seofontyne
18 - eahtatyne
19 - nigontyne
20 - twentig ("twen-teeh", and the -tig in all of these is pronounced similarly)
21 - twentig-an (not all that long ago, this would have been "an-and-twentig", and you'll still see that occasionally, but it's become customary to read strictly from largest to smallest values)
30 - þryttig
40 - feowertig
50 - fiftig
60 - sixtig
70 - seofontig
80 - eahtatig
90 - nigontig
100 - hundred
110 - endlufontig
120 - twelftig
130 - an hundred and þryttig
1000 - þusand

The Kvitlanders use the decimal system in their language, largely following the numeric writing system of the Swedish language.

Kvitlandic numerals 0 to 12 are:
0 - nyl, 1 - en, 2 - två, 3 - tri, 4 - fjor, 5 - fem, 6 - seks, 7 - sju, 8 - åtte, 9 - nin, 10 - tin, 11 - elv, 12 - tolv

Kvitlandic numerals 12 to 19 are:
13 - triton, 14 - fjorton, 15 - femton, 16 - sekston, 17 - sjuton, 18 - åtton, 19 - nonton

The numbers for multiples of ten from 20 to 1000 are:
20 - tvåti, 30 - triti, 40 - fjorti, 50 - femti, 60 - seksti, 70 - sjuti, 80 - åtti, 90 - nonti, 100 - (ena)hundra, 1 000 - (en)tusen

when the multiples of 10 (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) are compounded with another digit to form a compound number, for example 32, they are agglutinated (trititvå). The en(a) preceding hundra and tusen are optional, except when compounded.

Higher numbers include:
10 000 - tintusen
100 000 - hundratusen
1 000 000 - en miljon
10 000 000 - tin miljones
100 000 000 - (ena)hundra miljones
1 000 000 000 - en miljard

Kvitlandic employs the long scale for large numbers.
The cardinal numbers miljon and larger take on noun inflections and take the -es suffix when in plural. They are separated in written Kvitlandic from the preceding number. Any number can be compounded by simply joining the relevant simple cardinal number in the same order as the digits are written. Written with digits, a number is separated with a space between each third digit from the right. The same principle is used when a number is written with letters, although using letters becomes less common the longer the number is. However, round numbers, like tusen, miljon and miljard are often written with letters as are small numbers (below 20).

Examples:
21 - tvåtien
147 - enahundrafjortisju
1 941 - entusen ninhundrafjortien
12 524 - tolvtusen femhundratvåtifjor
156 932 - enahundrafemtisekstusen ninhundratrititvå
1 495 211 - en miljon fjorhundranontifemtusen tvåhundraelv
10 942 994 - tin miljones ninhundrafjortitvåtusen ninhundranontifjor

Ordinal numbers are usually declined by adding the suffix -(n)de, with exceptions to 1 and 2.
1 - først
2 - ander
