Northern Border
The moon was high in the sky, slightly illuminating the rolling steppes that made up the northern regions of the People's Dominion. It was warm for a night in April, roughly 55 degrees out with a slight chill in the air from the southeast wind blowing. Occasionally the lone cry of a wolf to be heard, the sound echoing out for what seemed like miles.
A man, carrying a large knapsack of clothes, ran towards the top of a hill, where two other men were waiting for him. The man, Phoibos Megalos, was at one time a loyal member People's Nationalist Party, even helping overthrow the old government of the Imperial and Royal Empire. Now though with the full effects of Maierism in full swing, the once thought of a utopia was long gone. Now a new thought appeared, the thought of escape.
Since the 2-26 Incident, thousands of people, mostly sympathizers of the old regime, fled across the border. Some were caught and brought back, but the majority had made it unscathed. As the policies of the "People's" Government went into effect, more and more people started to flee, causing the government to set up an entire Border Patrol branch just to catch escapees.
Phoibos, now drenched with sweat, plopped to the ground as he reached the men. The men, his sons, stared at him as Phoibos gasped for air. The three men sat in silence, until one of the sons spoke up.
"Did you get our stuff?" the son, Satirios, asked him.
"Nai, I got it" Phoibos replied, still gasping for breath as he tossed the backpack on the ground. "It should be enough for us."
"Did anybody see you?" Satirios continued, taking out a bottle of water and handing it to Phoibos.
"No, I think I made unseen" He replied reassuringly, taking the bottle. He gulped down the water, cooling his dry throat. He capped it and tucked it into the backpack. "Come, let us get a move on" He said as he rose up and put the backpack on.
The trio started to jog lightly, their feet making slight thuds in hard, dried ground as they did so. After a couple hours, they were close to the border, which meant that they had to be more careful with their actions. Their jog had turned to a fast walk, their legs burning with each step they took.
The unmistakable sound of car engines could be heard off in the distance, the sound growing louder. Renewed by the sound, Phoibos and his sons started to sprint as fast they could, ignoring the pain.
Two black BMW F20s appeared, their glossy coating shimmering as light from the rising sun hit it. The lead car quickly caught up to the trio, and cut in front of them, causing Phoibos to run into the side. Quickly the second one came from behind, doors flying open and four soldiers dressed in black uniforms stepped out, each pointing their MP-90 submachine guns at the trio.
"Mit Beschluss der Volksregierung. Aufhören, wo Sie sind!" the soldier closest to Phoibos said as more soldiers got out of the first F20. "Stop where you are citizen"
Realizing the situation was hopeless, Phoibos nodded to his sons. The sons each pulled out a Glock 17 pistol and shot the soldier that had given the command, killing him. Phoibos took out another pistol and started to shoot the soldiers from the first car. The soldiers quickly returned fire, killing the two sons and injuring Phoibos. He went unnoticed for a couple seconds, until the soldiers realized he was still breathing. They talked for a few moments before one of the soldiers handcuffed him and tied his legs together, and moved him over to where his sons were laying. The soldiers got back into their cars and drove off, leaving Phoibos to the carnivores that called the steppes their home.
The incident with Phoibos was just one of the many that flooded the office of the Ministry of Defense and Internal Security. The mass exodus had to be stopped and it was decided unanimously that a wall will be built to help keep the populace in the country and to protect them from the horrors that threatened the stability of the People's Dominion. It was time to lock down.
