It seems that your company is quite popular. We would like to buy two (2) Commonwealth Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrriers [CVN] two (2) Ardenfontein Class Multi-Purpose Icebreakers [AGB], and two (2) Washington Class Battleships [BBGN]. Total price seems to be $22,200,000,000 USD. We will not need any aircraft, and we request that an alternative propulsion be used. We will send in a crew to work on an engine for our ships.

Thank you,

Minister of War Edward Murriets

Recipient: Royal Beaufort Shipwrights Limited
Sender: Office of Acquisitions, Imperial Defence Magistrate
Regarding: Purchase of Commonwealth Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier
After looking at several other foreign designs the Imperial Korongolese Navy has chosen the Commonwealth Class vessel to replace the Gerald R. Ford Class aircraft carriers already in service but unfortunately the integration of these carriers will take some time as each of your ships have around two thousand more personnel on board and the Parliament has only authorized enough funds to purchase two such vessels, one for the Imperial Korongolese Navy itself and another for the Bantu Islands Colonial Guard.

We believe that these two Commonwealth Class aircraft carriers should cost $9,600,000,000 and hopefully the government will authorize more funds for another eighteen vessels once their capability and importance to the Navy have been proven to Parliament. To prevent any confusion in the future, the Bantu Islands Colonial Guard is a branch of the Imperial Korongolese Armed Forces responsible for the defence and security of our Bantu Islands colony and under full control of the Korongolese government.

To whom it may concern,

It is my utmost pleasure to inform you that the United Imperial Duchies of Danatha would like to purchase several vessels. Danatha's navy has always relied on lesser shipwrights, but now I see true quality craftsmanship and effort in your ships. Danatha's foreign policy has always been unagressive, but easy to defend. We hope to add your ships to our navy to keep us able to defend. We are willing to work with Yohannesische Bundesbank to finance the building of these ships. Finances will not be an issue as 27% of our annual budget is spent on defense.

We would like to purchase three (3) Commonwealth Class Nuclear Aircraft Carriers, four (4) Ardenfontein Class Multi-purpose Icebreakers, and three (3) Washington Class Nuclear Guided Heavy Battleships.

Thank you for your time.

Signed,

The Phlegethon-class guided missile frigate is a prolific example of one of the older pre-Ondeugd class ships that has been constantly refitted and improved to remain at the core of the Marine of the Knootian Defence Force. These Phlegethon-class vessels play a pivotal role in the protection of Knootian coastal waters, and also undertake ASW roles in Knootian territorial waters and in large maritime battlegroups.

In Greek mythology, the river Phlegethon ("river of fire") was one of the five rivers of the underworld. It flowed with fire that burned but did not consume fuel. In the Divine Comedy the river is made of boiling blood and is part of the seventh circle of hell, containing the shades of tyrants, murderers, robbers and those guilty of sins involving violence against others.

Concept

Like the De Ruyter-class Battlecruiser, the Phlegethon recieved initial gate planning shortly before the first Vogels administration, but the design itself only began in production in the second year of this administration. The laissez-faire government sought to replace a large number of old and increasingly outdated coastal patrol vessels and escorts as cheaply and as quickly as possible. The Marine therefore opted for the proposed Phlegethon design as it represented the best balance of capability and cost that would be allowed, and could be easily retrofitted and refitted with new systems and weapons, should the situation change for the worse in the future.

The design of the vessel itself was relatively simple. An all-steel monohull with a double bottom and twelve water-tight compartments for survivability, the Phlegethon was surprisingly tough, and the horizontal main deck and the angular single-block superstructure provided a mildly stealthy outline. The initial weapon, engine and sensor fit was hotly debated, as was the role of the ship itself given the variety of ships the class was going to replace, but eventually budgetary constraints won out and the basic fit, though sufficient, left a significant gap in capability.

For the construction of the ships themselves, each vessel was divided into five 'super-segments' which could be built simultaneously, to reduce production time and save money, and then welded together in a dry dock before fitting out. The modular design of this nature allowed far quicker installation of the larger machinery within the ship (such as the engines and gearboxes) within a shorter time period, and would in the future also allow far more efficient retrofitting of the ship's internal systems. Armour was removed to reduce cost, but a complete damage control and NBC protection system was installed, along with anti-spall liners and a hardened keel. The modular nature of the design allowed heavily damaged sections to be replaced entirely, whilst the thin steel hull could be easily repaired even at sea in the event of an attack.

Armament and Sensors were kept to a minimum, and the lack of committed funding meant very often that ships going out to sea were fitted with different outfits of weapons and electronics. The baseline weapon fit included a 76mm (3 inch) OTO Melara Gun, 2 20mm Phalanx CIWS, an 8 Cell Self Defence Mk.41 VLS, 2 20mm cannons and 2 dual 324mm Torpedo Launchers. Sensors included a decent 2D air/search system, and a hull mounted active and a towed passive sonar array for detecting and engaging submarines.

A hanger and pad for a helicopter were fitted aft, able to launch, maintain and recover a variety of helicopters, but only on ranged deployments were helicopters carried as matter of course on the Phlegethon class due to a lack of money and the aircraft themselves.

Despite these drawbacks, the Phlegethon class proved the underlying excellence of Knootian shipbuilding, and the ships, though underarmed, were excellent seaboats and tough fighters, popular with their crews due to the low maintenance requirements and the spacious and gentle ride they provided. The vessels served their masters well for a number of years, however, as subsequent events proved, an underfunded, undergunned Knootian Marine couldn't hope to complete the tasks and trials required of it.

After a rise in Defence spending, a refit from the original design was proposed and approved.

Refit (Batch II)

The basic design would remain the same, but the extra space for new weapons and sensors was quickly used up as the ships were bought 'up to spec' to be able to compete in the modern warfare environment. The main gun was replaced with a new 127mm model, allowing the Phlegethon class to finally be able to engage land and large surface targets with heavy artillery fire. The old, now-ineffective 20mm CIWS were replaced with more powerful Thales systems.

Two Quad ASM missile launchers were fitted aft of the funnel and the VLS was expanded from 8 to 16 cells along with an increase in the types of weapon avaliable to be carried. This increased firepower was complimented with a brand new 3D Air/Surface search radar and new ECM equipment, allowing the ship to track, engage and destroy more targets at a greater range. Other systems also recieved minor upgrades and new armour plating was added to the design to protect vital areas.

The Phlegethon class, having gone through this extensive refit, are now highly capable and effective ASW and Escort Frigates, able to deploy in both large battlegroups or by itself with relative ease, equipped with a weapon system and sensor package equal to any comparable design.

The de Ruyter class Battlecruiser is an example of one of the older pre-Ondeugd class ships that still makes up the mainstay of the heavy firepower of the Marine of the Knootian Defence Force. After decades of service, the de Ruyters are slowly being reassigned to secondary roles as general purpose escorts and patrol/station guardships assigned to Knootian Colombia, Ale-Yarok and (during Operation Tempo Doeloe) Tanah Burung, where they headed up the local battlegroups. Additionally, they are also deployed in land attack roles in support of amphibious operations.

Design

The de Ruyter was designed shortly before the first Vogels administration, and it served as Knootoss' 'poor man's battleship' in that era. With budget cuts mounting, they were nearly mothballed to be taken out of service in favour of real battleships such as the KDF Sirithil nos Fëanor – but they were saved this fate when defence spending increased from the second van der Laan administration on, and since then they have recieved many refits to make them suitable for the modern era: The VLS was upgraded from tactical to strike length, the secondary guns recieved significant upgrades, a new radar system was backfitted and the armor on the majority of ships was refitted to incorporate new reactive armour panels.

Its European build with two NBC-proof citadels, two masts, and a lower-than-average profile give the ship its distinctive appearance. While the class may lack in fancy weaponry, it is still able to perform decently for her assigned roles and the ships can accompany the Knootian Defence Force in expeditionary missions if supported by auxiliaries. While they generally have a few rusty spots here and there, they are still capable of taking on modern fleets when functioning inside a Knootian battlegroup. Ships in the de Ruyter class are named after historic Knootian admirals, especially from the seventeenth century and both Wars of Insolence. The KDF Johannus Hendrykxx and the KDF Barentstochter, KDF Emans and KDF Jongmans are amongst the more well-known of the Battlecruisers.

KDF Zeedier Class [SSK]

Out-of-character information: This is the design of Knootoss released for export in Royal Beaufort Shipwrights Guild, linearted by The Freethinkers

KDF Zeedier of the Knootian Home Fleet

The Zeedier-class submarine is a Knootian-designed diesel-electric (SSK) submarine. It was originally commissioned during the Vogels administration as the first real Knootian combat submarine and – for a long time – the first-of-class KDF Dolfijn was the only submarine in service for the Marine of the Knootian Defence Force! The Dolfijn herself is now on display in a museum in Den Helder, although many of her sisters still serve the Marine faithfully.

Design

Crewed originally by 49 men and women, the Zeedier-class submarines had much better crew facilities than other classes of comparable size and design. A decent diesel-electric engine plant gave the Zeedier class a good underwater range of 800km, and made it sufficiently silent underwater for effective use in reconnaissance and escort missions. Range was limited depending on performance, and the design optimised surface running to allow for effective patrolling.

The engine arrangment gave the submarine a speed of 17 knots when surfaced and 20 knots submerged, and the submarine could reach a maximum depth that exceeded 300 metres. The boat could carry up to 30 underwater mines or 18 21" torpedoes. With a then-new hydraulic torpedo reload system it could reload all four tubes in less than 5 minutes. The submarine was also capable of firing medium-range anti-shipping missiles, though these were rarely carried. The torpedoes were usually the MK48 as avaliable, though occasionally various marks of older, unguided weapons were used. The tubes could also be used to launch divers, and it was in this configuration that the first specialised support missions for Special Forces were conducted.

The Zeedier-class was extensively used to patrol the Reich coast as part of the cold war between the Reich and SATO, and underwent a Mid-life refit that brought them up to date with the modern state of submarine warfare, which included further automation, new sensors and a larger weapon load. The submarines were deployed offensively in the Iesus Christi Civil War, where they scored a number of successes against the Loyalist Naval Forces. Various covert operations in Knootian Colonies and the territories of Western Atlantic allies have been rumoured.

Although increasingly obsolescent as an attack submarine, the Zeedier has managed to retain its usefulness in a number of niche roles. As such, the vessels are usually transferred to standing guard fleets, and to training forces, rather than being decommissioned outright. There are still over one hundred and fifty serving vessels in the Knootian Marine, and all are expected to serve for at least a decade.

The remaining examples are used primarily as coastal patrol ships, capable and silent in shallow coastal waters hunting down infiltrators of various pedigrees and pirate forces. Generally, the first tour of a new submarine commander is conducted on a Zeedier, as the boats are considered more forgiving to inexperienced crews than the larger and more cumbersome Elementen submarines.

Although mostly replaced by the Vampier-class submarine in the role, two extended Zeedier boats were retained to support Special Forces operations. These are unofficially reported to be used for training purposes and operational use where the smaller Zeedier class can manoeuvre in shallow estuarine and inland water systems that would bar the large nuclear boats.

KDF Waarden Class [CGE]

Out-of-character information: This is the design of Knootoss released for export in Royal Beaufort Shipwrights Guild, linearted by The Freethinkers

The Waarden-class Air Defence Cruiser is a naval class of ship in the service of the Marine (Navy) of the Knootian Defence Force. Envisaged as an advanced area-defence platform, the class is possibly the most advanced warship ever built by Knootoss. She was originally envisaged as a destroyer, but the design was redesigned as a cruiser when the new concept of Naval Battle Groups was approved by the Marine. Two ships of its class sail with every battle group, complementing the air defences of individual ships.

The Dutch word 'Waarden' refers to values, in the context of ethics. (A concept roughly analogous to virtues.) The first seven ships of the class have been named after the seven heavenly virtues. More recent vessels have been named after philosophers and theologians. Prominent ships of the class are the KDF Prudentia, KDF Iustitia, KDF Temperantia, KDF Fortitudo, KDF Fides, KDF Spes, KDF Caritas, KDF Socrates and KDF Machiavelli.

Design

The Waarden class features an entirely new hull design, with enhanced stealth, and features intended to deceive any opponent's radar and acoustic sensors. Four single phased array radars automatically detect and track air contacts, while a long-range 3D radar system is capable of detecting even stealth aircraft and missiles. The phased array panels and the 3D search system are both capable of compensating for each other in the event of damage or failure. A low emission navigation radar is also included.

The fire control system combines all incoming data to provide both range of detection and accurate targeting. Its CAESAR integration is designed to defeat attacking missiles by providing quick-reacting firepower and jamming resistance against any aerial threat expected to be faced by a Knootian Battle Group. The system can control friendly aircraft as well as providing simultaneous surveillance, target-detection and target-tracking in a hemisphere over and around the ship. Secure CAESAR data-links allow the class to utilise the sensors and weapons of other escorts to further increase its effective combat radius. This is especially apparent when multiple Waarden class vessels are linked, rending hundreds of square miles of ocean and neighbouring coastal areas into no-go areas for enemy air operations.

The combat systems of the Waarden class provide the class with the ability to project a protective 'bubble' around whatever area they’re working in, detecting and shooting down hostile aircraft or missiles. Its mass of VLS launchers are designed primarily to deal with saturation air and missile attacks, utilising a mass of surface-to-air missiles hardened for heavy ECM environments.

They can be also be loaded with a variety of missiles designed to engage targets above, on and below the surface. Two powerful 80MW ZMI MASER systems complement the missiles with accurate, long range LOS energy weapons. They are primarily used for anti-strategic missile work, but can be deployed against other air and surface targets. For self defence, quad SSM tubes, a standard 127mm naval gun and 8 individual 6mm CIWS mounts were installed. A helicopter hangar for two light helicopters, landing pad and drone launching rail were also added.

KDF Elementen Class [SSBN]

Postby Yohannes » Tue Mar 27, 2012 4:33 pm

Out-of-character information: This is the design of Knootoss released for export in Royal Beaufort Shipwrights Guild, linearted by The Freethinkers

Image
KDF Argon of the Knootian Home Fleet (click the image above to see the high resolution version)

[Click here for High Resolution Image]
(zoom in to enlarge details further)

The Elementen-class submarine is the by far most common nuclear submarine design in the Marine of the Knootian Defence Force. The class comes in two distinct subtypes serving two different roles. The fast-attack (SSN) version carries heavyweight torpedoes for attacking naval vessels and missiles for attacking land-based targets and enemy shipping. It can operate either alone or as part of a Knootian Defence Force battlegroup. The strategic ballistic-missile submarine (SSBN) version on the other hand is used primarily as a powerful strategic deterrence, in accordance with Knootian nuclear policy.

On several occasions in recent history, Knootoss has sent out large fleets of Elementen-class submarines to engage in cat-and-mouse games during periods of Cold war with selected opponents. They have also been used to blockade Tanah Burung during Operation Tempo Doeloe. Prominent Elementen-class submarines include the KDF Lithium, KDF IJzer, KDF Germanium, KDF Barium and KDF Argon.

A midlife update program has been put forward by the Heraclitus Group, which would bring the Elementen class up to a state of the art standard just shy of the capabilities of the newer (and much more expensive) Vampier class.

Design

Since the administration of Lousewies van der Zaan, nuclear power has started gradually replacing submarines with diesel-electric propulsion such as the Zeedier-class submarine. The first Elementen-class prototype, the KDF Waterstof, was commissioned in the late 1990s. Most of the naval submarines built since that time in Knootoss have been powered by nuclear fission reactors, as the use of nuclear power instead of fossil fuel enables the Elementen-class submarine to travel around the world submerged and essentially hidden for months at a time.

The boats were initially based on upscaled Zeedier class vessels, and retain from this initial planning stage their refined bow and the x-shaped control planes. Like other Knootian submarines, they have a large sail (with surface working areas) and a relatively shallow draft for their size, designed for the shallow, stormy waters of the Nordsee. In terms of detectability, the biggest innovation was the adoption of the pumpjet propulsor, which significantly reduced cavitation and acoustic transfer from the drive mechanism, greatly reducing the submarine's noise signature.

The SSBN redesign was begun near the end of the design process, and to accomodate the requirement whilst keeping to budget an extended, reconfigured hull section was designed and added in to replace the vertical cruise missile tubes with a longer, larger 'humped' casing for a new SLBM design. This allowed up to sixteen ballistic missiles to be carried, but provided little extra space for the additional crew and facilities that came with them. As such the strategic version of the Elementen class lack the refined lines of dedicated ballistic missile submarines and are notoriously cramped boats in comparison to their international peers and other submarines in the Marine.
