The 7th World Championships of Babbage Rules Football

Postby The Kytler Peninsulae » Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:40 am

With the agreed support of The Babbage Islands, The Kytler Peninsulae hereby prepare to host the 7th World Championships of Babbage Rules Football.

Babbage rules football is a non-contact variation on American football (gridiron/gridball) for mixed-gender teams. The clickable link provides a full precis of the game.

The Babbage Islands have previously hosted six world championships in various guises as the McLeod Cup. That trophy will remain the prize in The Kytler Peninsulae, but the championships have now been renamed. Who will lift the McLeod Cup this time?

All nations are welcome to sign up; specific invitations will be extended to the nations who participated in McLeod Cup VI. Scorination will take place in the latest version of xkoranate available at the time of the competition commencing. A format will be agreed as signup numbers become clear, but it is intended to retain a McLeod Cup tradition of all teams playing knockout games after the group phase, with various minor trophies available to those who miss out on the McLeod Cup itself.

Co-ed flag football is certainly the starting point I used in the invention of the sport for NS. But watch out for the details!

We're definitely looking good for a potential 20-24 teams. More details on format coming up in the next day or so - I was going to say there was some minor disruption potential from a house move, but I doubt even that will be the case (I'll just have to use my smartphone for submitting results scorinated on my laptop).

That's 20 - that's a nice neat number to go with, so consider signups closed. Draw will take place within the next 24 hours, with scorination likely to start on Sunday, late evening UTC.

Tournament structure

These Championships will involve four pools of five teams. The top two in each pool progress to the Cup/Plate quarter-finals, the winners of which play the Cup semi-finals with the losers left to contest the Plate semi-finals. The third- and fourth-placed teams play the Bowl quarter-finals, while the fifth-placed teams enter the Shield quarter-finals - the two winners of whom will be joined by the highest-ranked losers from the Bowl quarters. The knockout format is identical to that proposed by The Babbage Islands for a 20-team McLeod Cup, but with 4x5 instead of 5x4 pool play to make qualification clearer with no dependence on other groups to determine which teams progress to which competition. Additionally, it rather aptly means that teams will face seven games to win the 7th World Championship.

Ranking for seeding purposes will be based on group record, but with the caveat that for the Cup/Plate seedings the group winners will automatically receive seeds 1-4, and ditto for third-placed teams for the Bowl seedings. Also, group-stage matches will not be allowed to be repeated at this stage, and seedings will be adjusted to prevent this, switching the 5-8 seeds in the first instance, then the 1-4 seeds if that is required. Wherever possible, no team will be moved two places in the seedings. (I haven't yet worked out if it's even possible to create a situation where this is necessary.)

Knockout fixtures
K1 Shield Quarterfinal: 1 v 4
K2 Shield Quarterfinal: 2 v 3
K3 Bowl Quarterfinal: 1 v 8
K4 Bowl Quarterfinal: 4 v 5
K5 Bowl Quarterfinal: 3 v 6
K6 Bowl Quarterfinal: 2 v 7
K7 Cup/Plate Quarterfinal: 1 v 8
K8 Cup/Plate Quarterfinal: 4 v 5
K9 Cup/Plate Quarterfinal: 3 v 6
K10 Cup/Plate Quarterfinal: 2 v 7

K11 Shield Semifinal: Winner K1 v higher-ranked Loser from K3 or K4
K12 Shield Semifinal: Winner K2 v higher-ranked Loser from K5 or K6
K13 Bowl Semifinal: Winners K3 and K4
K14 Bowl Semifinal: Winners K5 and K6
K15 Plate Semifinal: Losers K7 and K8
K16 Plate Semifinal: Losers K9 and K10
K17 Cup Semifinal: Winners K7 and K8
K18 Cup Semifinal: Winners K9 and K10

K19 Shield Final: Winners K11 and K12
K20 Bowl Final: Winners K13 and K14
K21 Plate Final: Winners K15 and K16
K22 Cup Final: Winners K17 and K18

The teams have been allocated to the four pools in a seeded draw. The top four participating teams as per the Babbage Football World Rankings form pot 1, the next four teams form pot 2. The Kytler Peninsulae are in the next four ranked teams and would be in pot 3, but for the IC purposes of allowing the host nation to play games in the largest stadia, they have been allocated to Pool A automatically, and pot 3 consists of three teams who will be drawn into Pools B-D. As there are six new nations sharing the same BFWR of 0.033, pot 4 consists of all eight remaining teams, two of whom will play in each pool, with a condition that Green Jello Salad cannot be drawn into the same pool as The Babbage Islands.

The pots are hence as follows:

POT 1 POT 2
Darmen Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk
The Babbage Islands Thatius
Cassadaigua Kerblaekistan
Andossa Se Mitrin Vega Civil Citizenry

POT 3 (pools B-D only) POT 4 (two teams in each pool)
Vettrea Green Jello Salad
Carmadin Megadia
Tekcirb Western Cuba
Karditan
The Icemark
TyMason
Mapletish
Homelands our

The draw will take place on Saturday at 1337 UTC (0837 ET) on #nssport.
